Serj Tankian of System of a Down and Tom Morello of Audioslave started Axis of Justice, a nonprofit organization meant to be a central hub for social justice. Their most recent big event was to protest a new bill passed in Santa Monica making it illegal to hand out food to homeless people on the streets. They protested by marching, holding a news conference, andyephanding out lunches to homeless people. Serj said, I’m not worried police are going to show up and arrest usI’m worried homeless people are going to be hungry tonight.
Like most of the socially minded artists out there, Serj is also vegetarian. We sent him a note asking him to tell us about it. Short but sweet, his response is below
PETA2: Why did you decide to go vegetarian?
Serj: Touring and its variety of edible crap ... as well as knowledge of industrial slaughterhouses. I also think it was instinctive somewhat ...
PETA2: Share your strategy for eating while traveling.
Serj: Make sure there is something on the bus beyond pizza. I try to order good food, one more chore for a tour manager to complain about.
PETA2: What is your most important issue concerning animal rights?
Serj: Respect.
We all have to get life from Earth Mother to survive.
We need not to alter its already perfect state.
Thanks, Serj.
