What do hip-hop crew Black Eyed Peas, retro-metal heads The Darkness, Jet, the legendary Flaming Lips, Aussie superstars The Sleepy Jackson, The Dandy Warhols, and prog-rockers Mars Volta all have in common? They’ve all done more than just sign autographs. These rock stars penned letters to the CEO of Yum! Foods. Jules Cortez of Sleepy Jackson even added a special postscript, “KFC, Fucking Die!” His bandmate, Malcolm Clark pleaded, “Just be humane!”
There’s nothing humane about the Colonel’s secret recipe. Chickens killed for KFC restaurants are crammed by the tens of thousands into sheds that reek of ammonia fumes. They routinely incur broken bones from being bred to be top-heavy, from callous handling, and from being shackled upside-down at the slaughterhouse. Chickens are often still fully conscious as their throats are cut or when they are dunked into tanks of scalding hot water to remove their feathers.
