Step #1: Contact Peta
Whether this is your first campaign or you are an experienced activist, the professional organizers at PETA have resources to help your campaign. When you contact PETA, we'll send you FREE campaign resources like leaflets and posters, offer campaign advice, and connect you with other animal rights activists in your area.
Step #2: Get Educated
In the coming weeks, people are going to ask you a lot of questions about veganism. It is better that you become educated now so that you can provide intelligent, articulate, and professional responses.
Step #3: Audit Your Cafeteria
Use the checklist below to evaluate the current state of your campus cafeteria. When you've finished, create a concise document that details your findings and future goals.
Step #4: Meet with the Administration
It is important to meet with the administration and open clear lines of communication right from the start. Attend the meetings prepared with a list of changes that you want made, nutrition information, and vegan recipes. At these meetings, your organization will have the opportunity to state its case, answer questions, offer recipes, and demonstrate the student body's desire for vegan options. Be clear and forthright about your expectations. Most administrations will respond positively when given ample information
Step #5: Educate the Student Body
Although public education is the cornerstone of every well-organized campaign, it should hold a special priority while working to veganize your campus cafeteria. Remember that the final goal is not only the addition of more vegan options; we actually want people to change their dietary habits. For this reason, educating your fellow students about the benefits of a vegan diet should start in earnest at the beginning of the campaign and continue throughout its duration.
Step #6: Encourage the Administration
The campaign to veganize your campus cafeteria will not be won overnight. Most likely, the administration will make many small changes over the course of several months. For this reason, your organization should give the administration constant encouragement and support as they provide more and more vegan options.
Step #7: Escalate the Campaign
If the administration refuses to work with your organization or is moving too slowly, give it some incentive. Start with small, nonconfrontational demonstrations. Increase the scope, intensity, level of confrontation, and frequency of your demonstrations if the administration still refuses to work with your organization.
Step #8: Winning the Campaign
Once significant changes have been made, take the time to thank the administration. First, send handwritten thank-you notes to all the administrative officials with whom your organization has worked. Second, publicly congratulate the administration on its forward thinking, moral vision, and responsiveness to student needs. By giving administrative officials good publicity, your organization will encourage them to work with your organization in future campaigns.
