Carey Hart's New Anti-Chaining Ad!

By Nicole Nuss

Carey Hart is one of the best-known riders in motocross. He started riding when he was just 4 years old, turned pro at 17, and jumped from supercross to motocross in 1998. So just how good is Carey Hart, you ask?

Chains Are For Bikes Not DogsAt the Gravity Games in 2000, he became the first person to ever land a backflip in competition, and he invented the Superman Seat Grab and the Double Superman Seat Grab. He's also appeared in a number of videos, been featured several times in Rolling Stone, jumped a house for Kid Rock, and pulled tricks in XXX and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. He's broken more than 20 bones, but says that he will ride until it stops being fun.

So we know how good Carey is on a bike—now I'm going to tell you just how good of a friend he is to animals. En route to the photo shoot for Carey's new "Chains Are for Bikes, Not Dogs" ad, a trailer carrying more than $300,000 worth of Carey's bikes and equipment caught on fire. Nearly everything was destroyed, but Carey—being the kick-ass animal advocate that he is—decided to take a bad situation and make it good. Because making it to the shoot was no longer an option, Carey brought the shoot to the scene. Standing in front of the burned-out trailer, Carey posed for what turned out to be one of peta2's best-looking ads ever!

When chained dogs bark, it is really a cry for help, and if they stop barking, it just means that they have given up all hope of being rescued. Your dog likes to be warm in the winter and cool in the summer, just like you do, so allow him or her in the house with the rest of the family.

Friends don't chain friendsIf you see that a neighbor has chained a dog outside, try approaching them nicely. If your neighbor ignores your pleas for compassion, here are some helpful hints on what you can do. We've got factsheets, sample letters, information on legislation, and more to help walk you through unchaining dogs in your neighborhood. We've also got some sweet stickers to help you spread the message that life on a chain is no life at all for dogs.
