Converge is not a band that’s known for hiding emotions. That’s why it came as no surprise to us when singer Jacob Bannon wanted to share his feelings about being veg with PETA2. Check out Jacob's thoughts on vegetarianism, and then check out the pro-vegetarian ad he did shortly after the release of the band's Epitaph debut, You Fail Me.
Why do you think that animal rights and social activism have always been a part of the hardcore scene?
The punk rock community is an open forum for anyone and everyone. With that in mind, activism and awareness have always been propelled to the forefront of the conversation in punk rock. It's one of the beautiful things about what this community has to offer.
What do you say to people who are unfamiliar with animal rights?
I will never force my belief structure on someone, but if there is a curiosity about what I believe and practice, I will let someone know that there are issues out there they should be aware of.
Was there any one thing that made you go vegetarian?
Eating meat morally never sat well with me. When I was 13 and comfortable enough to make the decision to stop, I simply did.
A lot of people have a hard time when they first go veg. What was it like for you?
I never had any trying moments really. The thought of hamburger or steak actually made me sick the more I thought about it. The slaughter, the pain, and its final form disgusted me.
Do you discuss vegetarianism with friends and fans?
I did at one point when I was younger. In retrospect, back then I was still looking for some validation in my decision. At this point in my life, I do not feel the need to discuss it all the time as I am truly comfortable with that life decision. It's simply a part of me now.
What have you found to be the most effective “tool” for reaching into minds that seem very shut to the idea of animal rights and vegetarianism?
Education is key. It always has been, always will be. There is so much information out there. There really is something out there that just about anyone can relate to. Health, moral, and ethical issues, etc. It's all effective, someone just needs to find their specific thread to move them and guide them toward making a difference.
What issue involving animals is most important to you and why?
The greyhound-racing industry and its horrid abuse recordcanine abuse in general disturbs me greatly.
What can your fans do to help improve the lives of animals?
Care. Show compassion. Have heart.
