Veganize Your Cafeteria

We've all wished that our school cafeterias would serve vegan muffins, pancakes, "sausage," "chicken" nuggets, veggie burgers, nondairy cream cheese, tofu, and even soft-serve desserts, e.g., vegan ice cream (is your mouth watering yet?). But did you ever realize how easy it could be to make it happen?

Sometimes, just politely asking is all you need to do to get more animal-friendly foods in your cafeteria. So what's stopping you? Check out our suggestions below for making this happen, and e-mail us if you have any questions. We also have some specific actions listed below for you to take to earn mad peta2 Street Team points.

Remember, not only will veganizing your cafeteria help animals—it will also make your life as an herbivore drastically easier. If you don't veganize your cafeteria for animals, do it for yourself!

Give your school the Veg Advantage!
Veg Advantage is an online resource designed to help schools and universities learn more about available vegetarian options. It includes hundreds of product and recipe recommendations. The Web site also offers contact information for food-service providers to help make delicious meatless options available at your school!

We've compiled a pack of materials for you to print off and give to the person in charge of dining services at your school. We also offer a letter that you can download, personalize, and use to explain your concerns. All you have to do is pass on the materials to your school's dining officials and follow up with them.

Veganize your cafeteria.
Even one new menu item can make a big difference. When you succeed at getting one or more menu items offered, let us know!

Send your reports through our online form and be sure to provide us with what new options you got on the menu, the name of your school, and the name and phone number of a member of the administration we can contact for verification.

Promote the new vegan menu items to students.
We've got some easy suggestions of things you can do to promote the new vegan options in our " Veganize Your Cafeteria " pack. Remember , the more vegan meals students eat, the more likely the food-service department will be to continue to make these foods available.

For more suggestions on what you can do to get and promote vegan options, check out the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine's guide to Incorporating Vegetarian Meals on College Campuses. Even though the guide says that it's for college campuses, many of the tips hold true for high school students.

Collect signatures to show support of your efforts.

Print copies of the petition in our " Veganize Your Cafeteria " pack, gather as many names and e-mail addresses as you can, and then show the petitions to your school's dining officials.

Also, mail copies of the completed petitions to the address below and we'll reward you with 50 Street Team points for each e-mail address that you get.
