Guess what? You don't have to dissect!
That's right—if you're lucky enough to live in one of the states listed below, you have the right under state policy to refuse to dissect animals in the classroom! Simply click on the appropriate link below and print off leaflets to hand out to your friends, classmates, and teachers. It's important to let your classmates know that by law, they don't have to dissect in any of these states—so make sure they know!
After you've done that, the next step is to get your school to replace dissection with a humane alternative! We can help— check out this page for sample letters, replacement policies, and more.
You don't live in one of these states? Don't give up hope! Just because the law doesn't specifically state that you have the right not to dissect doesn't mean that you have to cut up animals! Click here to start cutting out dissection at your school. Tons of students have fought for and been given humane alternatives—and you could be next!
Do you live in Canada? For Canadian students, your right to refuse to dissect is protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Nova Scotia's South Shore; Vancouver, British Columbia; Toronto, Ontario; and Kelowna, British Columbia, have passed student-choice policies. Please visit FrogsAreCool.com for more information including details of the policies currently in place.
Do you live in the UK? The dissection of animals is no longer a requirement of any GCSE, A-level, or GNVQ course, nor is it required by the Science National Curriculum. Instead, these exam boards leave it up to teachers to decide whether or not to set a dissection practical in class. So while your teacher or lecturer may lay on the pressure, he or she cannot make you dissect. There are alternatives, and it's your right to use them.
And college students, we haven't forgotten about you! Click here to cut out dissection on your campus.
