Youth-fashion retailer Gadzooks has undergone more than a simple name change since its recent acquisition by former rival Forever 21. Now called Gadzooks 21, all 150 of the chain's stores in 36 states will be ridding their racks of items made with fur in accordance with Forever 21's no-fur policy. Forever 21 took the fur-free pledge after PETA launched a national boycott of the company in November 2004.
Why is PETA touting Gadzooks 21's ban on fur? PETA has obtained undercover video footage showing fur farmers in China swinging raccoon dogs and foxes by their hind legs and smashing their heads into the ground—breaking the animals' necks or backs but leaving them fully conscious, panting and blinking as they are skinned alive. China has become the largest fur-exporting nation in the world, accounting for a full 40 percent of total U.S. fur imports in 2004. Three million foxes, raccoons, rabbits, and other animals are raised for fur every year in China, where animals are not protected by a single law. Animals raised for fur in other countries, as well as those caught in steel-jaw traps in the wild, suffer similar agony before and during slaughter.
