From protesting KFC to helping PETA place a billboard in his hometown of Edmonton, it’s easy to see why Liam Hudson is our latest star.
Name: Liam Hudson
Age: 14
Hometown: Edmonton, Alberta
How did you learn about peta2, and what made you get involved?
I saw a feature on PETA that had to do with The Used, so I checked it out and was like, “This is the greatest site ever!” I joined the Street Team, and that’s where it all started.
What made you become vegetarian?
I was 13 when I went veg, and it’s been great. I feel better and I lost weight (hard to believe). It was all PETA who made me drop meat. Seeing everything on the Internet was enough for me, and then when I watched the video for “Free Me” that was the final straw.
What was your life like before you became an activist for animals?
I lived on meat—it was the only thing I ate. After seeing everything, from how it affects my health, the animals, and the world, I realized vegetarianism was the way to go.
What was your first activist experience?
That would be a KFC protest I organized. I decided if I want to show people that I’m serious, I better do something bigger than just stickering. So while I was on vacation in Ontario I started planning.
You’re raising money to help PETA put up a billboard in Edmonton. Tell us about that.
I am raising money to put a billboard up in Edmonton. I am starting simple by asking for donations from friends and family, and then canvassing at big events around town. So far I have raised a few hundred dollars! The billboard that we will be putting up reads, “We Are Not Nuggets.”
Is your family supportive of your animal rights beliefs?
They’re great, they help out a lot. My mom drives me to protests and my sister is always interested in anything I do.
What have you done at your school to educate your fellow students?
I am just starting high school at Bev Facey. I am going to be in Grade 10 and can’t wait.
Who is your favorite peta2 band?
I love Rise Against and Goldfinger—they are both amazing.
What are your favorite vegan foods?
I love making vegan tacos with veggie ground round and soy cheese or vegan meatball subs with veggie meatballs and soy cheese. Anything with soy milk!
What is your personal message to the more than 90,000 Street Team members of peta2?
Think global, act local. Educate people at any time you can and stand up for what is right, even if you are standing alone.
