5 Questions with Keana (and a Contest, Too!)

We’re always looking for young artists that inspire hope, and Keana Texeria—a young and talented artist who is making a name for herself in Japan and here in the States—is all about inspiration. As a devout animal lover who is aiming to do whatever she can to help animals, we recently sat down with Keana to get her take on all things animal rights. Check out our 5 Questions Q&A!

1. Why did you want to get involved with peta2?

I love animals so much. Since I was little, I’ve wanted to be either a veterinarian or marine biologist (dogs and dolphins are two of my favorite species). I’ve always wanted to do all I can to help and raise awareness for their benefit. I am so excited to get involved with peta2 not only to express my love for animals, but also be a voice for them since they can’t speak for themselves.

2. Animals killed in the fur trade are electrocuted, beaten, and even skinned alive. With so many fashionable alternatives to fur, there’s no reason for anyone to buy the real thing. That being said, what is your response to the following fill in the blank sentence: People who wear fur are _______.

People who wear fur are killers. It is so not worth the sacrifice, pain, and suffering animals go through for the sake of vanity and glamour.

3. Have there been any bands, artists, or books that have influenced your views on animal rights?

I’ve been an animal lover and advocate from the beginning. One film that has definitely influenced my views is The Cove, especially because the dolphin slaughter ongoing in Japan; is happening in a country that has launched my career.

4. Are there any other animal rights issues that you feel passionate about?

Definitely the dolphin killings. It breaks my heart what is happening to these poor, innocent dolphins. I want to do everything I can to help them! It’s [so] sad that it’s happening in a country that has launched a very successful career for me. But if I have to sacrifice losing my fans for speaking out to help stop the slaughter, so be it.

5. What advice would you give to your fans who want to get more involved with animal rights but aren’t sure where to start?

Start in your local community. See how you can get involved in helping homeless or abused animals. Definitely follow and learn more about PETA and peta2 to see what you can do for animals around the World who are in need of our help. Remember, animals cannot speak. They cannot fend for themselves. It’s up to us to provide them with love, nurturing, and safety so they can live a happy life just as we do. ?

That’s great advice! Thanks, Keana! Speaking of dolphins, ya’ll should sign our petition to help the intelligent, social sea animals that are imprisoned by SeaWorld.

After you’ve signed, tell us in the comments below why you will be sure to steer clear of SeaWorld for a chance to win one autographed copy of Keana’s new album Still In A Dream. Did I mention that this album is only available in Japan? So cool! The contest ends on May 11, 2011, and 1 winner will be chosen at random and notified by May 18, 2011.

I am so glad that I have found PETA just like Keana! I love animals so much, and I find it so cruel for us humans to be able to torture and murder animals like they mean nothing! It makes me hate being part of the human race because we can be so cruel! But I am also glad that I am standing up for animals with PETA to help them as much as I can. I haven’t been to seaworld, and dont ever plan to go because of the way that they treat those poor innocent animals! I hope that with everyones help PETA will be able to help them!!

People who capture sea animals for the purpose of financial gain need to swim in front of hundreds of people and try to bounce a ball with their nose.

It’s not fair to treat and degrade animals like Seaworld does. If we don’t patronize them, we CAN make a difference.

And big thumbs up to Keana for caring to speak out.

Happy Mother’s Day! Today, let’s think of the baby dolphins who grow up with no mothers or mother dolphins who get their baby dolphins taken away in captivity or killed. Let’s put a stop to the violence against these beautiful peaceful creatures. Boycott #SeaWorld.

Wonderful feature peta2 on Keana. It’s uplifting to see you feature someone so young and beautiful willing to stand up and make a difference.

I stay clear of SeaWorld because they force marine animals to do unnatural tricks, and preform in front of huge crowds while terrified.

I love Keana and what she stands for. I’m glad you brought up this issue peta2. Aside from the brutal slayings of dolphins, the water park problem is repulsive. Seriously, how would you like to swim in a pool every single day and do tricks for people? That’s how the whales and dolphins feel held captive in water parks.

It’s time we take a stand. Boycott Seaworld!

I’m so very proud of you Nana! I’m an animal lover and advocate too! You probably took after me. I started ‘pets’ in the family (ask you mom) and I’m happy my three daughters all have dogs. And in your house Keana you have no less than two pets at a time. Again, I’m proud of you and I love you!

Bravo Keana. Its about time someone spoke out about theme parks who continue to get away with imprisonment of animals. I agree with her that whoever wears fur for the sake of being vain is a killer.

Great job peta2 for featuring someone so selfless and outspoken.

I saw Keana in concert in Osaka in October and have been a fan of hers ever since. She did a meet and greet and was so kind and sweet to all the people who came to see her show. I love her now even more after seeing her publicly profess her love for animals especially dolphins, which are my favorite too.

I am Japanese American and must say the killings of these amazing and magnificent creatures by people in my native country disgust me. Unlike in America, its difficult for a girl my age (19) to speak my mind as by tradition, girls are best seen, not heard.

I am so inspired by Keana who is younger than me for being so brave and outspoken. She speaks for many young girls like me, who are not as courageous.

    Love from Osaka

Keana I’m a new fan. Its so great of you to take time to speak about your love for animals and being a fighting voice for them.

Everyone needs to boycott SeaWorld or any theme park who keeps animals in captivity for financial gain. How would you feel if you had to do tricks in front of an audience every single day then going back and spending your life behind bars while your captors collect money and profit from you?

Animals have feelings and demand just as much respect from us humans.

It always made me sad seeing dolphins and whales in captivity at SeaWorld or any other animal park. They are trained to perform day in and day out instead of being able to enjoy their lives peacefully in their natural habitat. Thank you Keana and peta2 for standing up for these beautiful animals.

I applaud you Keana for voicing out your love for dolphins. The annual slaughter in Japan is a serious issue that needs addressing and I certainly commend you for speaking out no matter what the cost. I admire you for being so vocal and passionate about these animals. One voice can definitely make a difference. Much love from Switzerland.

I think it’s amazing what keana is doing. she’s very down to earth and selfless. She rather lose her japan fanbase than have these people slaughtering these poor innocent animals. I can’t believe i actually went to seaworld as a child. I rather see animals in their natural habitats while i’m out boating then see them trapped in a tank. People use these animals just to make money. they don’t realize that they have feelings and are living things. I’m really proud of Keana for taking a stand against killiing dolphins. If this doesn’t stop they could become extinct soon. I always knew she was sweet and just plain awesome but i never saw this coming. I’m happy you interviewed her. Iwould really love to win this cd i’ve been a fan of Keana for a really long time.

Very nice. Also cows are some of the sweetest, mildest creatures in the world. Pigs are so much like us and very social. Chickens are very social too. We should all care so much about all the living beings in this world and not murder them for food.

People who eat bacon, chicken or hamburgers are __________. Fill in the blank with Keana’s answer above! I agree. Killers. Murderers. Their deaths are often very gruesome.

And, even if your survival depends on the death of another living being, the way it’s done now and eating several living beings a day, is far removed from any kind of health and respect for us and them.

No worries about losing fans, all the other living beings on the earth, outnumber humans, and we will support you.

It’s wonderful that Keana is intellectual enough to see how amazing animals are! I agree with her about the dolphins in Japan. Japan is so beautiful, but dolphins really don’t deserve to be murdered so ruthlessly. No animal does!

It’s so important that we take care of animals because they are a very significant part in our lives. Not only do they beautify the earth, but they play other important roles too. We get basic essential things like wool and milk from animals. Some people don’t realize how much these beautiful creatures should be appreciated, yet animals are still tortured and killed for unnecessary reasons like cosmetics testing and are skinned for designer clothes!
I hope to be a veterinarian and I did my Science paper on why animal testing is not justified. I also did a documentary on whale hunting and helped raise awareness for it. It’s fantastic that Keana has watched ‘The Cove’, because the people behind the film should be applauded for exposing such a dark and awful secret. I was sickened when I heard the graphic descriptions of how the dolphins were slaughtered.
For thousands of years, animals have been helping humans in numerous ways, e.g carrying loads (horses, camels, donkeys), finding crucial items (police dogs, cats, moles) and guiding the blind, amongst other things.
It’s important that we can make them realize how special they are in simple ways, even though they don’t possess the same consciously complex minds as us, they do have emotions and feel love and pain. We have to show them love and compassion.

Keana is just fantastic. I’m delighted that she did this interview because it’s important to get the word out to people, especially target people young like us! I’ll be sixteen soon but I know a lot of people my age are not concerned by such issues.
