5 Questions with Shut Up and Deal
This week’s 5 Questions blog comes courtesy of Connecticut pop-rock outfit Shut Up and Deal. The band can be seen all summer on the Vans Warped Tour, alongside the likes of Set Your Goals, The Wonder Years, Moving Mountains, and dozens more. Check out what drummer Burt Hoagland had to say about what influenced him to go flesh-free, and enter the contest below to win a Shut Up and Deal prize pack!
1. How long have you been vegetarian? What influenced you to make that decision?
I’ve been vegetarian for just about 5 1/2 years. As for what led me to come to that decision is kind of funny. I actually ran across a bunch of PETA magazines and brochures at a show that I was at when I was about 21. I took them home and flipped through them for a couple weeks as well as doing some of my own research and about a month later I was a full on vegetarian. The thing that has kept me vegetarian for so long is the way I feel. I feel 100% healthier than I did when I ate meat related products.
2. What are some of your favorite vegetarian/vegan foods? Do you have any go-to spots you have to hit up when you’re on tour?
I really enjoy any kind of Asian food. In Salt Lake City, UT there is a place called The Long Life Vegi House which is awesome! As far as being on the road and doing the fast food thing I think Pei Wei is definitely the place that I like the best. Whole Foods is also really good as far as being accessible and having amazing food while we’re on the road.
3. Of all the major animal rights issues are there any issues that are particularly close to your heart?
I think the factory farming is probably the issue that caught my attention from the beginning. It really struck me as just completely inhumane and unnecessary. Although I have never witnessed anything first hand, I have done a lot of my own research on the subject. I think that if people knew what actually goes on in these facilities they would think twice about eating a Big Mac or a bucket of chicken from KFC.
4. If a fan were to approach you with questions about how to get involved with animal rights, what advice would you give him or her?
I would just tell them to be vegetarian for starters. The meat industry really is based on supply and demand; if there’s not a demand then we won’t have to worry about the supply. I would also tell them to just spread the word tactfully without being too abrasive. Being vegan/vegetarian is a really weird concept to a lot people so you really have to have your facts straight when you talk to people about it.
5. What does Shut Up and Deal have coming up this summer that we can be looking forward to?
Well we are actually going to be playing the entire Vans Warped Tour this summer with bands like Paramore, Jack’s Mannequin, and A Day To Remember. We’ll be on the Kia Kevin Says Stage so come and check us out and say hey! I know I speak for the whole band when I say that we would love to meet all of you!
