Ben Can't Talk

Profile photo of Rachelle-O

But you can, and Ben needs your voice!

Last week we told you about a lone declawed bear named Ben, who, for years, has been confined around the clock to a cramped, barren pen at Jambbas Ranch Tours, a seedy roadside zoo in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Ben paces back and forth over and over again and bites the chain-link walls of his cage, pushes against them, and reaches his paws under them. A bear expert who reviewed footage of Ben for PETA explained that with these sad behaviors, Ben is trying to tell us something—he wants out!

PETA has been in contact with Cumberland County officials since last summer, requesting the enforcement of a county law that prohibits the possession of bears, raccoons, foxes, and alligators. Jambbas owner James Bass has all these types of animals in his possession, and he keeps them in substandard, miserable conditions. But so far, no action has been taken. In fact, PETA recently learned that rather than enforcing the law, Cumberland County commissioners amended the ordinance to exempt Jambbas at Bass’ request.

PETA has arranged for Ben and some of the other illegally possessed animals to go to sanctuaries where they will receive the care that they deserve. If you live in North Carolina, please consider attending the July 11 Cumberland County Commissioners’ meeting at 6:45 p.m.

The case was continued until July 11. But the animals languishing at Jambbas still need your help. Please contact the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners and politely request that they reverse the amendment made to the ordinance at James Bass’ request. Ask the board to allow Ben and the fox, raccoon, and alligator held captive at Jambbas Ranch Tours to be placed with reputable facilities that are equipped to provide them with the suitable care and environment that they need and deserve. PETA has offered to relocate these animals to sanctuaries at no cost to the county.

    Dear,mr or misses.

There are animals being cooped up and we petaians want them set free , we belive that they shouldnt be cooped up in a cage with limited room. i mysself find it very cruel. so if you could please just let the lovely animals free into thier habbitat (which im sure they will be most happy there) and let them be free, that would mean a lot to me.

In the old days city people never had opportunities to see wildlife or they didn’t even travel very far from where they were born. Some only saw wild animals when the circus happen to pass through town.
Then someone started collected them and charging people a fee to see these wild animals.
Now, we have films, internet, and we don’t need these antiquated ways of exposing the children and general public to see what they look like, sound, how they “behave”, nor how they can do tricks to entertain the masses, for sport, nor do we need to harvest the wild animals for food as in the cave man time, nor to use their skins for clothing to keep warm, and now called fashion which happens to be making a big come back.
Unfortunately, these attitudes and entitlement exist in all countries all over the world, and we as thinking human beings in my opinion should have evolved beyond this by now.
We can not change the past tortures, extinctions, annihalations of species because of past ignorance, however,we have to power to help do something right here and now for all the animals, and also the people by reaching out and informing, teaching, and try to negotiate a different way of thinking.
Of course, it is hard to change a culture and nearly impossible but if we don’t try then we will always will live with the regret that we did nothing and let this go on, so their blood and suffering will be forever on our hands which we can not wash off.
Cruelty does start with innoncent life forms then escalates to where people are tortured and murdered if not checked and corrected.
When children are shown cartoons with violent acts like a cat is being blown up and they and their parents think it is funny, is it then no wonder we have all this cruelty around us.
Experiments have shown very young children who watch violent cartoons with punching and kicking will reenact with these same act with a blown up doll, while others shown cartoons without violence taken into the same room do not exhibit these behaviours.
As intellgent human beings we must take note to teach kindness, understanding, and respect for each life form and they have the right to exist without our interference of any kind, and that they have the right to this planet natural spaces where they can live peacefully and as they are born and intended to be.
Of course, any one being in captivity, or captured results not knowing how to forage for food, taken away young, totally “mixed up” not knowing will be needing rehabilitation, and if not life-long care with the best possible natural living situation to live out their lives in peace and tranquility.
We have a worldwide problem here and Ben is just one more poor soul whom is paying the price.
I will try to do what I can to help, I will try to bring attention to his plea.
Of course we can not do it alone as individuals, so please everyone write and keep writing every second week or so, just to make sure they in power do not forget about this one poor soul at a time where ever they are, what ever their situation including Ben!
Thank you for reading my thoughts on this issue, remember we all can do something about it right now by starting in front of our own door with trying to influence friends and family, our own community, and expanding to the film industry that mostly depicts horrible acts of violence reaching the mass media by brain washing them that violence is o.k. and to be enjoyed as entertainment, to expanding and reaching out to everyone on this planet
With great power comes great responsibility!

Please choose to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves and realize that Ben needs to be relinquished to another facility where he can run and play and be as free as possible. Now that he has been declawed, he can’t be released into the wild to be a normal bear and that is heart breaking in and of itself. But he could be sent to a much happier, healtier place. Have compassion and do what is right for this poor innocent creature. Animals are not here for our entertainment–at least not in the way they are displayed in zoos, etc. Please help him to live a fulfilling life at another sanctuary where he can be free!

I emailed this jerk who has no passion or caring for animals – it’s obvious by the pacing and fence chewing that Ben does. I feel so sorry for him. It’s so unnatural for a bear to be living in ANY kind of cage. All of this jerk’s animals are probably feeling the same kind of pain and lonliness that Ben feels. Be kind and put them all in sanctuaries.

Wild animals should be born free and that is the way they should stay. Who are we to rip these animals from their natural environment to bring in to our world for our egotistical entertainment. WILD MEANS FREE and beautiful in their natural environment where we should feel privilaged to catch a glimpse of them.

Ben is a beautiful Animal that deserves to be with his own kind. This is cruel and heartless. What kind of person would put any animal through this kind of thing?
    Free Ben!
He is an amazing animal that does not deserve any of this hurtful treatment. He deserves to live a free life.
What kind of power does this give people and how could they possibly enjoy it? I hope they rot in hell.

    Mr. West,

With all due respect we strongly urge you to intervene and remove “Ben the bear”… from James Bass of Cumberland County to an animal sanctuary where he will receive the care he needs and deserves. It is very disheartening to know that an animal like Ben can be caged under such horrendous conditions since there are no valid arguments that would defend or rationalize the right or necessity to subject any animal to such inhumane treatment/conditions.

For every action there is a reaction. According to the law of karma, if we cause pain and suffering to other living beings, we must endure pain and suffering in return, both individually and collectively. We reap what we sow, in this life and the next, for nature has her own justice. No one can escape the law of karma

For GOD”S sake!!!! What are we as a culture doing to the “poor animals”. We seem to have lost our regard for life and the well being of the animals on earth. Everywhere you look innocent creatures are suffering at the hands of humans. Animals are starved to death, clubbed and kicked then have their skin and fur ripped off and left to die in agony!!! Dogs are beaten to tenderize them before skinning them alive and eating their flesh, calves are savagely beaten about their heads then left to die until they breathe no more!!! Really… the society we live in now is frightening and void of human compassion and emotions. All we seem to care about is getting the job done quickly, cheaply and being monetarily compensated!!!

Humans treat animals as if they are #2 when the truth is we wouldnt be here without them. We would be nothing without them. They were here first and yet we act as if we were. There is a correct way to treat animals if you are going to even think about keeping them and this is most defiantly not how.

Bass, you are likely to be put into one of those cages sooner than you think. The world will know about your side show. Release all animals to the sanctuaries Peta has established long ago, where these animals can touch grass, eat what they are supposed to and not go stir crazy as you are doing to the only one we have a picture of. Go on social security, medicaid, we don’t care, just free the animals. We are not done with you. Absolutely no threatening to you, just the truth.

Let me say that the bible teachings are misinterpreted by stating in the book of genesis that ” man shall have dominion over the animals”. This does not mean control, use or abuse. We are to accept this injunction as earth’s good stewards in the care of both earth and the animals. Animals belong in their own natural habitat not in circuses, sporting events, vivisection labs, meat, clothing, body parts, religious rituals involving animal sacrifices (roots of paganism),etc. Anything contrary to this is not normal or natural but deranged and diluted thinking.

I just wrote a very nicely worded letter and I hope that he reads it and understands where I’m coming from because animals are not meant to be put in cages, if they are captive they are meant to be loved and able to roam free. Bears are a wild creature that shouldn’t be locked up and should not be for the entertainment of people. We have things like TV, and the internet to entertain us, we do people need to cage exotic animals that aren’t meant to ever be in captivity.

Animals are not born to be raised in a cage. We have wild animals to live in the wild. It shouldn’t matter if the circus or some other sick form of “entertainment” want these animals to make money. I don’t know how people don’t have a heart and feel sad for these poor animals.
These animals can’t talk but they can scream. That should be enough to stop.

Another sad example of what happens when we objectify another living being.Im surprised he isnt made to do tricks and forced to mimic human actions. At least now his story is out for full view of all.Now we can get him the peace and good living he deserves. All of us need to apply the full measure of seeking justice for our animal companion Ben

I literally just shed tear.. I remember when I was little, I loved going to the zoo cos I’ve always been absolutely amazed by animals. I used to think it was wonderful.. But I remember wishing they were free, and I never knew why. This is why. Animals, without say, get trapped behind glass walls and lonely cages. This bear might not have a voice, but he is making it obvious that HE WANTS OUT. This is very sad and pathetic that the people who claim to “own” this creature, don’t even take care of it enough to realize that not only is this what he wants, it is what he needs. A bear will never be a bear when trapped in the cage, he needs to get out, and take in the earth. This animal has never gotten the chance that he has a right to have… The chance to truly, live. </3

Ben needs to get out of that cage cage and put that person in the cage instead and let him see how it is locked up. I don’t understand how this can happen and people let it happen. If that was an area near me I would do everything I could to get him out of that cage and let him go. I don’t get it.

When will people realize that animals aren’t here for our entertainment! They’re meant to be free and they’re more precious than so many people care to realize.

Let This This Poor Bear Out… If God’s Plan Was For Ben To Spend His Life In A Cage, He Wouldn’t Have Been Born A Free Happy Bear <3 Why Dont We Put A Human IN There For A Couple Days And See How They Feel Behind The Cage…

Today’s the April 12. How did the court go on? I am so looking forward to see the people in charge of this cruelty where they deserve: Jail. For the sake of god, we all grew up with teddy bears… Is this what we do to our cute childhood buddies?

This is horrible! I can’t believe someone would force a beautiful, wild animal to sit inside a cage for the entertainment of humans!

BEARS ARE NOT PETS! THEY ARE WILD ANIMALS! And thus, their habitat is the forest and in the wild, not some cage…

Let the bear go, he’s not a pet to be kept in a small cage, he’s a wild animal who needs more room to roam…. my chihuahua’s have more freedom to run then he does, and they’ve never been caged!!

this is just heart breaking, and what makes this even worse is he would die with in a day if he was let go, bears need there claws to survive in the wild. he needs to be relocated to a zoo where they will take care of him an wait on him hand an foot.

How sad and pathetic. To allow such abuse is down right inhumane. Why are these people allowed to get away with this? This country needs to qute worrying about celebrities like Charlie Sheen and Lindsey Lohen, who have a choice and voice. Ben dose’nt . These people need to be locked up and put in a cage. Then let’s see how they like it. Sad truth is people will abuse or mistreat anything as long as it makes a profit. Stop it now!
