Brooklyn Bunny Contest!

Posted December 27, 2007 by Rachelle Owen

Have you heard of the Brooklyn Bunny? If not, have you been living under a rock?!?! Just Kidding! For all of you out there who are new to the phenomenon of the Brooklyn Bunny: meet Roebling.

Roebling is a Dwarf Hotot rabbit who was rescued by Kevin Dresser and Kate Johnson after his family decided to put him to sleep. Roebling entered the lives of Kevin and Kate after a former bunny companion passed away. The lonely pair was in the middle of opening a bunny sitting service (complete with webcams), but when Roebling entered their loft, they put the sitting service on hold because Roebling commanded the cameras!

So get to know Roebling, the tried and true Brooklyn Bunny. Not only does he live in a swanky 1,000 square foot loft in Brooklyn, feast on flown-in bunny meals, and have his own website, he is also named after the designer of the Brooklyn Bridge!

After you fall in love with Roebling, enter here to represent your favorite Brooklyn Bunny with a free shirt (your choice of short or long sleeves), some buttons, and a jumbo fridge magnet!

Bklyn_Bunny_tee.jpg

All you have to do for a chance to win is comment below about your favorite bunny (that is, your favorite before you met Roebling, cuz we know Roebling is your new favorite)!

The contest ends on January 3, 2008, and winners will be chosen and notified by January 10, 2008.

Just so you know…by commenting here, we’re taking that as acknowledgment that you’ve read and agreed to our privacy policy.

Also by commenting, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions.

I actually have 2 favorite bunnys. Bugsy and Clyde. I rescued them and had them “fixed so that they would be good boys. They had their own room and loved playing with baby toys. They are now at a high school where they are teaching students to respect all living things and some biology, with a sprinkling of history and story writing. I miss my boys but get reports that they are doing well.

i would like to second the nomination for augustus of williamsburg. he saved my life, quite literally. he saved me from a gas leak when brooklyn union kept insisting there was no such thing. he wouldn’t leave the pipe behind the stove. over and over, he tapped and sniffed. i called brooklyn union back, a second time, and the gas leak was off the charts! he was rescued from staten island, so he knows a thing or two about toxins.

The current one is the best. Fancy Dancer rules all the rabbits. She looks like a wombat and wears party hats on new years eve (although somewhat begrudgingly). She’ll lick you hand when you scratch her butt and nip your finger if you pull to much hair out. She needs a boyfriend right now, though. Her girlfriend passed away in April and I think she’s ready to swing the other way.

My favourite bunny is named Freddie Widgeon after a P. G. Wodehouse character. Sometimes my husband teases Freddie and I by saying “Freddie Widgeon ate a pigeon!” but both Freddie and I are vegetarians. Freddie is made of metal and sits on my dining room table. My husband and I have talked about getting a live bunny but don’t feel we should subjugate a living thing so Freddie is our solution. Likewise we feel Roebling is wonderful because many have the opportunity to enjoy his company.

I would like to nominate Augustus, rescued by Suzanne. He has incredible traits: a passion for mango treats, greens and nose bumping, not to mention his beautiful brown profile. He was once caught in a drawer and all hell broke loose trying to find him. He was eventually found and enticed out by a homemade ramp (after eating a few carrots). He loves his home in williamsburg and nothing is better than seeing his white downy stomach and little feet when he stands up to check out what is happening around him. I nominate him for the best brooklyn bunny.

    Aw, bunnies.
My all time fav. bunny was my old one. I was young when I had him, and (Ever so originally) named him Floppy Ears, because of the way his ears fell to the side. He was an awesome bunny, and I put all my love in to him. [: I was still pretty young when we had to put him down because he was extremely ill, and in a lot of pain. The better part, was that he lived to be a good age of 10 before we did have to put him down…
But now, having met Roebling, I have fallen into my crazy bunny stage again! Or it’s popped up again! We already have our city limit of animals in our house (Rescued kitties!) But once we have to sadly part with them, if we don’t rescue another kitty, I’ll be sure to check out the bunnies!
Go Roebling! We’re all watchingAw, bunnies.

Gizmo is my favorite bunny!( Roebling a close second..Sorry) He is a very lovable rabbit and he takes good care of me. He also likes my parents. He knows how to get your attention and he thinks it is time to eat whenever you eat! He also likes to eat what you are eating. (depending on what it is) He is king of my house! All my friends just laugh when they see how he lives. I am also going to email you a picture of him and my dad. He just loves to kiss you! (He has to know you before he will kiss you though. Once he knows you……watch out!!)

My two favorite bunnies (sorry, I can’t pick one) are Buzzy and Peanut. Buzzy loves to eat clothes on the ground or pants on your leg (especially new expensive jeans that you have just bought), while Peanut loves to jump on the bed and run around, until she catches you looking at her, and she jumps down, guiltily. Only to jump back up again in a minute. They are both the most lovable, cuddly and spoiled rotten bunnies around!

Our favorite bunny was our Himalayan dwarf bunny named Hip Hop but we called him “Bunny”. He was our favorite because he made us unique carrot sculptures every night. He liked asian women and asian vegetables. He loved hanging out under his coffee table (day time studio) and his futon in our bedroom (night time studio). He would only go outside when it was 75 degrees. When he was happy he made little sounds like “vhut vhut vhut vhuuutt” and liked playing “squishy face” with us. He was a very relaxed and loving bunny and we loved him very much. Roebling reminds us a lot of Bunny. Thank you for sharing him with the world! Wishing Roebling a great 2008 and a long happy life.

Before I met Roebling, I had a beautiful huge Cinnamon bunny called Marta Giorria (Irish Gaelic for “March Hare” in honour of my fav book, Alice in Wonderland). After he sprouted testis (at first, we were told it’s a female!), we changed his name to Martin. He was with us for a few years and became close friends w/ our huge cat, Simon, who would protect him from other cats when they both played in the garden together. Martin sadly died a few years ago. We still have Simon. Watching Roebling’s adventures on-line reminds us of Martin. Bunnies are just so sweet & so much fun!! Give Roebling a big hug from us.

I have to admit that Roebling is my second favorite bunny. I have a Dwarf Hotot that looks exactly like Roebling. His name is Oliver and I could not love him more if I tried. He is so loving, smart, devoted and wonderful I cannot tell you. I enjoy gazing at Roebling as he looks just like my bunny. I am so thankful that Kevin and Kate stepped in and rescued this wonderful rabbit.

My favourite Bunny of all time is the delightfully named Bunny Carr. Host of Quicksilver, the most inappropriately titled Irish TV quiz show of the 1970s and early 80s, Bunny deserves sainthood (and the Favourite Bunny Award) for managing to feign incredulity and stifle guffaws, unlike those that resounded around the country, when contestants stumbled magnificently in answering his questions. Examples include:
Bunny: What was Hitler’s first name?
    Contestant: Was it Heil?
Bunny: Give me the first name of Gandhi.
    Contestant: Goosey, Goosey.
A friend of mine won a whopping 300 pounds on the show in 1981 – enough to pay for his first year in Trinity College in pre-Celtic Tiger Ireland.

Skexi Secor-Walton is the worlds best Bun! She is a 4 pound Sable Martin who also goes by the aliases – ‘Mangy Hare’, ‘the Ninja’,’the notorious B.U.N.’, and ‘the criminal’. Skexi and I have lived together for close to nine years. She was co-pilot on a road trip we took from Seattle WA to Brooklyn NY (she is the original ‘Brooklyn Bunny’). We camped together, snuck into hotels, even stayed in the world’s scariest hostel in Chicago… Skexi is a true ninja and takes it all in stride. Skexi has been a ambassador for her kind. She hosts cocktail parties, making sure to mingle with all guests. Even nipping ankles to remind the not so smart that there is a rabbit down here and she ain’t going to pet herself! I love it when new people meet Skexi because they always say things like ‘I didn’t know rabbits did that!!’ to just about every intelligent, funny little thing she does that all people who live with rabbits would just say ‘duh’ to. Skexi is smarter then my in-laws dogs. She can figure out toys that they just stare at and whine. Brooklyn bunny needs to come out with a shirt for Skexi that says ‘My rabbit is smarter then your dog!’ For these reasons and countless others Skexi is my favorite rabbit ever:) (Favorite girl rabbit- Roebling is the best boy bun!)

Hard to choose my favorite bunny, but Zucchini Bunny gets the #1 spot. Once seen chasing both the dog and the cat at a full run in the back yard. This humourous sight was seen during his “fun time” outside one summer. Zucchini is no longer with us, but his plump daughter, Phat Bunny is still with me and rolly polly as a lump of butter. Long live Zucchini!!

My two rabbits Eliot and Chibi are so amazing – Eliot is a big lop-eared snuggle bun and Chibi is a dwarf adventure bun, and they just love each other tremendously. If I lay down on the ground, Eliot licks my face and my hair while Chibi jumps up on my back to explore. But these bunnies are not nearly as amazing as the rabbit volunteers at the Oakland Animal Shelter – they have so much love for the rabbits, they know that each one will be someone’s perfect companion, and ensure that each individual rabbit makes it out of the shelter alive. If it weren’t for the volunteers, not only would I not have adopted my two wonderful bunnies, but I wouldn’t have had a chance to experience these folks making a difference in the lives of people and rabbits, through their everyday volunteer work. Their love for the bunnies makes all the difference. So I guess my favorite bunnies are really only honorary rabbits, honorary bunnies that are the protectors of all the little bunnies in Oakland.

Favorite previous bunny was Hoati the Hotet who has to be a cousin of Roebling. He was the most attentive rabbit at the pet store so I played sick from work one day to go get him and he was the light of my life for ten years until he passed away in my arms from old age and arthritis. He lived all those years with natural herbal medications after I realized he was never going to get over snuffles by taking antibiotics. Also, our Roebling Bridge in Cincinnati was a prototype for the Brooklyn Bridge and there is a new book out about Roebling the architect from a Cincinnati author,
Don Heinrich Tolzman. Hotot’s were bred by a Frenchwoman originally and I think thats why they are so people-oriented, much like children. I have had rabbits in the house for
twenty eight years and none were as communicative
as Hoati. We got him a wheelchair when he was
stricken with arthritis in his back and every day he would show me that he could reach his water and food before I left for work.
Wish to see him at the Rainbow Bridge.
    Love to Roebling–Leslie in Ohio

My favorite bunny? Where do I even begin? Bunnies have become such a central part of my life that you could almost consider me the resident crazy bunny lady that lives down the street (but in a good way!). My first baby bun entered my life nearly three years ago. A young New Zealand who came to be known simply as Bun-Bun hopped downstairs from her owners, my negligent neighbors, and into my life. What a turning point for I would never be the same afterwards. I read everything there was to learn about bunnies since this was my first. I finally joined my local rabbit rescue and welfare organization, Bunny Buddies of Houston (www.bunnybuddies.org).
Bun-Bun successfully underwent a tricky spay procedure and was ready for her companion. Sure, a human is nice, but I have to work and can’t give her all the cuddles that I’d like to during the day. Enter in Mr. Scotchie. He was a young mixed-breed rabbit who was being fostered by two people who I’m so proud to call friends now. When he met my Bun-Bun, it was literally love at first sight. They did their little meeting dance and decided who would be boss and head-grooming ensued! This was quite lucky since most first meetings can be much more ferocious.
Scotchie had only been with Bun-Bun for about 6 weeks when Bunny Buddies received a call from the SPCA to come and assist in a seizure of 157 rabbits from a local, terminally ill breeder. We all volunteered countless hours working to sex and separate bunnies, scrub cages, feed and water properly, administer health care to get the sick ones back to health, etc. In the end, we (Bunny Buddies) fostered and found homes for about seven dozen bunnies in addition to the ones the SPCA placed.
This is the part where I introduce my Jersey Wooly, Mowgli, and AFL Carmela. These two babies were skinny and skittish and it’s such a testament to what a great diet and lots of love and attention and a proper home can do for a bunny. They are special for coming from such a lousy place and now knowing that humans aren’t all so bad. Mowgli is a hound for his papaya tablets, and Carmela does a little dance standing on her hind paws when she is fed her daily salads!
My last bunny entered our home this past April. Her name is Miffy from the Dutch artist Dick Bruna’s cartoon character. She was supposed to have been an ‘Easter Bunny’ but was dumped off when she developed abscesses on her front paws. The previous owners found that to be too much to want to deal with. She was supposed to have only been my foster until she was spayed in the summer, but I fell in love with her addictive personality and added her to the bunch!
So that’s my crew and now you see why it’s impossible to pick a favorite. Every poor bunny out there waiting to find their forever home could also easily be another favorite, so please go and adopt a bunny from your local shelter.
Lastly, I’d like to add that Scotchie is quite an intelligent little fellow. When he found out about his humans looking at ‘this Roebling guy’ on the internet, he decided to create his own email address and correspond with his fellow lagomorph. Roebling is a smart bunny too; he emails back! Only his paws get stuck on the keyboard and there’s multiple duplicate keeeeeeeeystrrrrrooookessss (that’s what Scotchie says). Kevin and Kate are brilliant and I’m glad for the attention they and Roebling have received. I proudly wear my green Bklyn Bunny t-shirt along with the buttons and magnets which garners questions from people. When I’m bored at work or having a bad day, I flip on the webcam to see what Roebling’s up to and I always smile. Sometimes he’s just sitting in his meatloaf position, but if you’re lucky then you might catch him doing his bunny flop rolls.
Good luck to them and keep up the good job in raising houserabbit awareness.
    Binkies,
    Rachel

My favorite bunny is Teddy, a dirty-looking brown Harlequin that looks a little bit like a roasted turkey. He’s my favorite because even though he got fixed years ago, still gets really horny and tries to hump my feet. That’s my definition of perseverance.
I also love how methodical he is when he eats a stalk of celery – he munches on it lengthwise, works his way from one side to the other, and when he reaches one end he reverses his direction and works his way back to the other until he’s done. Then he cleans his beard.
He’s an inspiration to us all, really.

Well, although Roebling is beautiful, I have to say my favorite bunny is my own bunny Sadie. She came from the House Rabbit Network who is a rescue group in the Mass area. She came to them with such a bad eye infection that she needed the eye removed, but that makes her even more special. She also is a larger white rabbit with pink eyes which are actually harder to place. For some reason people are freaked out about the eye color which is another factor that caused her to linger in foster care. The rescue worker said 60 percent of potential adopters won’t even consider a pink eyed rabbit. Stupid. I think the pink eye is BEAUTIFUL.
When I was making my choice I didn’t want it to be because I felt sorry for the bun. Otherwise I would have chosen someone else. It had to be the bunny that chose me.
It was her spirit and her ability to love life despite her tragic past and her disability that won my heart.
Thank you for letting me share my story.
    Beth & Sadie
P.S. The missing eye and the eye color also gives me the opportunity to tell people about the plight of the domesticated rabbit.

    Hey there,
My favourite bunny before Roebling would have to be Bunny! – a straight-edge cartoon character brought to ‘life’ by my witty Polish house mate, Kompi.
… but then of course there was the Russian Bunny-Bunny-Bunny cartoon that had me in stitches… and how could I forget Mad-Max, the violent and totally psychotic pet rabbit who had us running from him as kids.
And how about the rabbits from Watership Down.
Would you say that I’m a bunny fan?

My favourite bunny, before Roebling of course, was my baby Oscar. Oscar came to us through a “friend” of a friend, who was moving, couldn’t take him, and was going to give him to a laboratory. My husband and I knew nothing about bunnies but knew that we couldn’t let this happen. So we adopted our 16 pound lump of love. He was a French Lop, grumpy, loads of personality. We called him our “teenager”. In the process of falling in love with him, we also learned so much about rabbits as companion animals that we never knew. Our cats loved him and together they were a fearsome trio. We were so excited to move to America; unfortunately it wasn’t to be for our Oscar. He got sick and passed away shortly before we moved. We did all we could and I still feel that I didn’t do enough. I truly believe he was here to show us the wonder of rabbits and the joy they can bring. I wear him on a necklace and I carry him in my heart always. My husband and my boys (kitties) miss him so much. But really he is always with us. Besides he would probably yell at me if he knew I was writing this. “Mom, how embarrassing!”. That’s my little Oscy. :)

    Hey y’all!
My favorite two bunnies are my own bunnies, Snow and Ninja. They are the love of my life and also the mascots of my anti-fur club. It stinks to hear that some people out there are WEARING rabbits instead of playing and cuddling with them. Seriously, do you want to wear a dead bunny on your back? So to all you fur-wearers out there, LOVE bunnies, don’t WEAR them!

My favorite bunny, besides the Brooklyn Bunny of course, is my pet bunny Foo. When you pet him he licks your fingers, and when you pick him up he plays in your hair or nests in your shirt. He really loves his timothy grass, apples, and lettuce. He is a very sweet bunny.

What a great story, Roebling is my “favorite”, but I love all animals and every Brooklyn bunny!

My favorite bunny (pre-Roebling) is a wild Cottontail rabbit who frequents the backyard of our summer house in upstate New York. We have dubbed him Bruce. Of course Cottontails usually take off running at the sight of humans, but when I have my camera in hand Bruce is not afraid of me at all. I have to creep up on him slowly but when I get close he will actually pose for the photos. He is so cute with his fuzzy white tail. The sight of him always lights up my day.

Before Roebling, my favorite rabbit was Stephanie of Stvlive’s Rabbit:

And before that my favorite bunny was Bugs :)
But since I love Brooklyn – Roebling is now my favorite!

My favorite bunny was my old companion animal. His name was Shakespeare. He was my favorite because if I was sleeping on my bed he would hop up the little stairs I made him and burrow right beside me and snuggle. =]

My favorite bunny was Thumper. Me and my family rescued her from a disgusting flea market. Thumper was a beautiful grey bunny and once we took her home, we knew she was family. I loved her very much and we didn’t let her sit in her cage all day every day. If the weather was nice, we would let her roam around the backyard and play with her. But then she started getting sick and our vets couldn’t help her out and one night she started dying. I miss her alot.. even my dad cried. And since we were family, we buried her near the Rose garden; her favorite spot. I wouldn’t forget about Thumper, so I will just have to have two favorites. Thumper, and Roebling!
    R.I.P. Thumper. I miss you.

My favorite was a baby bunny named Ozzy. My roommate found him at a shelter in Raleigh and shared the pictures with me. He was adopted before she could decide to adopt him, but he’ll remain forever in my heart. :)

I’ve only known one bunny in my life, but he’d definitely be my favorite even if I’d met a whole posse of them. Growing up, my sis brought home a rabbit we named Pokey, partly because he resembled the Pokey Little Puppy of Golden Book fame, but also because he loved to “poke” his stuffed animal companion. Unfortunately, my mom developed very bad asthma after we adopted Pokey, so we weren’t able to get him a real, live girlfriend, but during the summer months, we’d let him hop free in a fenced-in area of our backyard, where he’d rub noses with the wild rabbits. Such a sweetheart, he was. He got along smashingly with our cat and dog, too. When he passed, we buried him out back, beneath his favorite romancing tree.
