Bustin' Vegan Myths Part 2

Last week we launched a new blog series to help you get the facts on some of the top myths about veganism. Tons of you commented (?), and we’re addressing some of your most commonly heard myths today! Check it out:

Oh dear. Animals aren’t “already dead” when they are castrated without any painkillers on factory farms, or when they have their throats slit while fully conscious. In order to make it to the plate, animals endure complete misery—being mutilated without anesthesia, being crowded body to body in cages, pens, or crates, and are often slaughtered by essentially being dismembered while still fully conscious. They feel pain—just like we do, and they feel every bit of fear and suffering when they’re headed to slaughter. They only go through this so people can eat meat, dairy, and eggs—period.

Sure—if you only eat specialty vegan foods, but it’s important to remember that eating animals can also be expensive (and not just because of the products themselves, but because of the health bills associated with eating meat!). Rice, beans, potatoes and other veggies, as well as many other vegan staples are cheap and easy to find everywhere. More and more grocery stores and fast food restaurants are serving vegan food and are making it even easier to eat vegan on the cheap. See this blog for my personal rant on this subject.

Actually—you don’t. You know all of those milk ads in your school hallway and all of the milk commercials you see on TV? They’re a product of the dairy industry—which throws millions of dollars at advertising every year. The best calcium sources for anyone are leafy greens, broccoli, kale, sprouts, beans, and other veggies. Sure, milk and other dairy products contain calcium, but when you’re getting calcium from animal sources, you’re also ingesting animal proteins with it. Those same proteins actually leach calcium from your bones—making this a wholly inefficient way to stay healthy.  Want more proof? In a 12-year Harvard study of 78,000 women, those who drank milk three times a day actually broke more bones than women who rarely drank milk.

Oh, how I ? this one. I wish I could send anyone who says this back to their high school economics class for another take. It’s the simple game of supply and demand in play here—the fewer people who eat meat, the fewer animals who will need to be killed to end up on a plate. There won’t be billions of “excess” animals roaming around, taking over, becoming overpopulating or … dun dun dun … EATING US! They’ll simply not be bred for us to consume anymore—which is a good thing.

What’s the most common vegan myth you hear? Comment below and we’ll address some of them on the blog next week!

Stay loud!
-Rachel

i posted this on FB cause they were saying peta was filled with lies and over exaggerated…….. and this is what i got in returned

“I was going to keep out of this after my last post, but bringing farming into it is kinda where I draw the line… Im not sure if you wrote this ^^^ or if it was just emailed and you reposted it … but… Do you know why they are castrated…??? Did you ever think to ask yourself what would happen if they werent in the “cages” that they are??? I highly doubt it…and animals ARE stunned before there are terminated… please before you go and slander a industry, that nobody would be around without, research dont just repost….”

    and

“Over exaggerated. sorry it sounds like it belongs on a Mexican soap opera.. It is what it is no matter what we do. Can we change it? doesn’t our economy revovle on agriculture? Basically things in this world will never change becuz humans a…re greedy about everything. We can’t help ourselves so how can we help the other inhabitants of this world? It is a sad reality but the truth none the least. We may see change in our life time but it may not be for the best”

Oh, how I hate that milk one. My step mother is constantly telling her 3 year old daughter to “make sure you drink all your milk so your bones will grow big and strong and you’ll stay healthy!” It takes all my willpower not to say, “actually, the more milk you drink, the more likely you are to have weak bones that break easily. If you want her to be healthy, tell her to drink soy milk and eat her broccoli instead of supporting the pain and torture of innocent animals.” And I know what you’re thinking, I *should* tell them that! But trust me, it wouldn’t go well. Unfortunately for me, I’m stuck in a house where they tolorate my choice, but refuse to listen to my reasoning or ever even consider not having a slab of steak, chunk of chicekn, or slices of bacon or ham on every plate, at every meal. It sickens me, but what can I do?

The most ridiculous one I’ve heard is that “not eating meat contributes to global warming because when we eat cows and kill them we stop them from froducing methane gas, which is bad for the ozone layer”. What a load of crap!! Again, it’s supply and demand – if less cown were farmed there would be less cows to produce the methane gas and less of an impact on the environment. Not to mention the mass deforestation and erosion of land caused by clearing land for farms and grazing areas. Oh, meat-eaters, please get your facts right before you preach your mistaken ideals to me.

The second myth was something I was bombarded with before I turned Vegan in ’08, the was eating Vegan becomes expensive is when your buying meat substitutes. And as you mentioned rice, wholemeal bread veggies amongst others can be bought at low price and in fairly good amounts. This Vegan Myth Buster series is really appreciated by the way! xx

Around here, I hear it all… and mostly, people are just offended! yes offended. The thing i hear the most is that “God put animals on this earth for us to eat”. I know other kids who are not allowed to be vegetarian or vegan. But the one I hear the most is “The animal is already dead”, which I used to believe, WHEN I WAS 10.

About the whole “if we don’t eat animals, they’ll take over” myth: But humans are overpopulating earth and humans are greedy, which animals are not. So it’s not ok for animals to breed, and animals are neutered and spayed against their will, but it’s ok for humans to breed and don’t have any regulations on their population? Hypocracy sucks.

3 of my favourite ones are
    1) if we didn’t farm animals to eat and wear they would become extinct

    2) its bad not to eat meat because it puts local farmers out of business. To which I normally reply “drug lords and sex traffcers lose their jobs when they’re put in prison, does that mean we should just let them get on with it?”

    3) And the most offensive I’ve been told is: there are children starving in Africa and your wasting food by being a picky eater. God that one gets on my nerves, clearly they never looked a food or energy pyramid before

“God put animals on Earth for us to eat!” I usually hear this at church, but however I believe this is wrong he put them here at the same time as us, we’re to enjoy Earth like the animals, and God put YOU on Earth, too, want me to eat you? “But that is called “cannibalism,” my dear children, and is in fact frowned upon in most societies.” Why,yes, yes, Willy Wonka, it IS.

People will look at me with worry in their eyes and tell me, “You’ll die without protein. How do you get protein?”

I think people are so wired with meat being “The” protein that they are unaware that meat eaters are often getting too much protein.

The other most common misconception is vegans are susceptible to central nervous system damage because of B12 deficiencies.

ok so my mom keeps insisting that if i don’t eat meat i’ll get weak and weaker and you won’t be like… strong. Is that true.?

About the first one – I think when someone says that, it’s more in a “Meat you buy is already dead, you might as well eat it.” way, but you covered that one in the last myth, so it’s all good ^^

The last myth is my favorite too! Along with the one that cows will explode if you don’t milk them! 😉
