Bustin' Vegan Myths: Part 3!

We’re baaaaaack! Is everyone ready? Let’s do this.

“Animals don’t have souls, so why bother?”

I love this one. In fact, a family member recently tried to stump me with it just last month. It’s like people really think that this is the end-all statement that negates veganism entirely—like this one illogical observation will snap us out of our vegan spells and back into the real world. Oh, animals don’t have souls, you say? Ah, so that must mean that they can’t experience pain and suffering and therefore don’t really need our help, right? *face-palm*

Whether or not you believe that animals have souls—we really can’t scientifically prove that animals have souls any more than we can prove that people do—the existence of a soul isn’t even the issue at hand. The issue is whether or not animals have the capacity to experience pain and suffering. And guess what? They do! They don’t want to be skinned alivetested oneatenbeaten, or abused in any other way, and the existence or absense of a soul does not and will not ever change that.

“At least kosher meat is more humane than typical meat.”

You can go ahead and file this one next to the “organic” and “free-range” myths because, quite frankly, that’s where it belongs.

Today’s kosher meat comes from the same abusive factory farms that all other meat comes from. Despite the humane intention, there are no standards to ensure that kosher slaughter is any less cruel than conventional slaughter. In some instances, it’s been shown to be much worse. The bottom line here is that meat is murder. No matter how “kindly” an animal is treated prior to slaughter, all animals raised for food suffer and are exploited. If you’re really looking for a kinder, more humane diet, go vegan!

“Chaining dogs isn’t cruelthey love being outdoors!”

It’s no big secret that dogs enjoy the great outdoors. Take Ryan‘s precious pooch, Penny, for example. This little lady enjoys the finer things in life, such as hikingcamping, and even occasionally soaking up rays at the beach. So sure, Penny loves being outdoors, but does that mean she wants to live outdoors on a chain 24/7? Absolutely not.

Condemning dogs to “solitary confinement” on a chain is so cruel that it’s actually illegal in some cities! Chained dogs are exposed to searing heat, bitter cold, rain, and wind, putting them at risk for heat exhaustion, frostbite, and exposure. Chains can also wrap around trees or other objects, water bowls can easily tip over, and food can quickly spoil in the summer and freeze in the winter.

These extremely social pack animals want—and deserve—companionship, scratches behind the ears, walks around the block, and the opportunity to curl up at their humans’ feet at night indoors. If you think that your dog would choose living outdoors, alone and chained, over hanging out with you indoors, you’re just plain ol’ barking mad.

Are there any myths you’ve heard lately that we haven’t tackled yet? Tell us below, and we’ll try to get to them next week!

Till next time!

What I think we should do is ask meat eaters why they “NEED” meat so much, we are skinny, they are “Chubby”, we know how nasty meat is made, they don’t even care….Jerk….

But either way I believe that being Vegetarian is the same as being gay or wanting to be Transexual, it isn’t a choice, it is who you are….

I get the first one a lot everytime I talk about animal rights anywhere, it’s annoying.

I don’t know if you’ve covered this one, but a friend of my mom’s asked me why I was vegetarian and she goes and says, “Well, they’re knocked out anyway. And they’re already dead when you cook them.” Then she continues to eat her burger (we’d gone out to eat after I had hair modeling). I didn’t really know how to respond. It was difficult having my mom and her friends there, so I kept quiet and ate my food.

This is where economics comes in. They may be dead when they’re on the market, but buying meat produces demand for meat. If people stop buying so much meat, demand decreases so companies either adjust supply to match or start a campaign to get people to buy more (probably the latter.. sigh).

Anyway, I tell those people that every dollar you spend is a vote for what you’re for, so if you buy meat, you support inhumane practices against animals. If you buy cheap clothing, you’re probably supporting sweatshops. That’s how the world works.. buying things shows companies what you want and don’t want, which is why boycotts are so important.

Google “Nestle Boycott” to see what I mean.

Technically having a soul or not doesn’t matter any ways… we all are the same in almost every physical and psychological way. If there is a soul it’s just a psychological thing so technically animals do have souls…

Being a Christian, I think it’s funny when fellow Christians refuse to be vegans because “animals don’t have souls.” The Bible actually never says animals don’t have souls and gives reason to believe they do. And even if they don’t, we’re told clearly to take care of them. I don’t see how eating them is taking care of them…
I love your post by the way! God bless :)

When people say the “animals don’t have souls” thing to me, I always reply “humans are animals too”. People tend to forget that – we’re all mammals.

      – not just are we animals, but, those with a soul must be living with thoughts and feelings the ability to have their own personality right? well think of it. if you get to know an animal, you will see its personality, like a pet dog or cat, heck even hamsterss do some may argue that but a proud hamster owner myself i can tell you hamsters do have different personalities. and if you believe in ghosts, if animals didnt have souls why is there legends of dead animals walking the halls of a home or haunting the area they were killed? Like the “demon cat” of the white hosue, if you dont know about it look it up, i heard about it a long time ago if im not mistaken its a black phantom cat thats been seen, if animals didnt have souls how could the soul of this dead cat be haunting the white house?
