Bustin' Vegan Myths: Week 8!
… really? I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m pretty sure that having a hook jammed through your mouth would be a bit uncomfortable—but hey, maybe I’m crazy.
A lot of fishermen love to say that they don’t hurt fish because they release them. Hmm … think about that for a second. Fish who are caught on hooks often have gaping holes in their mouths or other parts of their bodies. When thrown back into the water (after being brought up the surface and starting to suffocate) fish are traumatized, injured, and vulnerable to other predators. They often die of trauma or are eaten by predators because they are too weak to defend themselves.

OK—I get this, I really do. But let’s make one thing clear. Buying animals from pet stores isn’t helping animals. The pet trade relies upon “animal lovers” to fund their cruel, deadly business. Every dollar spent on purchasing an animal from a pet store directly funds the neglect, cruelty, and death seen in undercover investigations like this one. Any time an animal is purchased from a pet store (a dog, hamster, fish, rabbit, gerbil … you get it), you’re telling the store “Hey, it’s OK to trade animals for cash like trinkets! They deserve nothing more than a $2.99 price tag! Keep ’em comin!” and that is NOT OK.
It’s hard to go into a store and see cute rats lined up in a tiny box. Of course, we want to take them all home, let them run free, and give them love. But if you fall for the cruel pet store trick, you’re opening a spot up for a new animal to be bred to take their place. Don’t. If you see animals who are sick or need help at a pet store, report it here. Don’t buy them. Please.
When you tell someone you’re vegan, they looooooove to say things like “I met this vegan once and she coughed ALL THE TIME!” or “I knew a vegan girl in high school … and her skin was always itchy!” and even (this is actually something we’ve actually received) “Vegans have loose skin!” … basically rambling off some obscure illness (or not) that once afflicted someone they knew was vegan. It’s just another way for people to convince themselves that eating a healthy plant-based diet is deadly and that they MUST EAT STEAK to survive.
Studies have proven again and again that veganism fights diabetes, heart disease, helps lower cholesterol, helps to prevent cancer, and can help you lose weight. Vegans and meat eaters alike can live off of unhealthy foods, sure. (After all, eating French fries all day would be vegan, but not necessarily healthy). It’s a good idea to work all kinds of different fruits, veggies, legumes, and more into a vegan diet—but remember that vegans have a leg up on meat eaters by eliminating flesh.
