Bustin' Vegan Myths: Week 9!

Posted February 25, 2011 by Rachelle Owen

It’s my favorite time of the week!

Oh, Fur Council of Canada, you are shameless—and not in the good way. For a few years now, they’ve been pimping this “fur is green” idea all over town, obviously hoping that no one who hears their “message” actually uses their brain to work through that logic. Uh … fur? Green? I don’t think so. There’s nothing natural or “green” about supporting an industry that rips the skin off of animals while they’re still alive, blinking, and struggling. It’s also unnatural to place traps out in the wild in which unsuspecting animals will step in and end up gnawing their own legs off trying to get loose from—or drowning or starving to death while trying to do so.

On average, it takes up to 15 percent MORE energy to create a fur garment than it does to create a faux garment—and furs and leathers are often treated with toxic chemicals to “preserve” them. Know what that means? They’d literally be rotting (get it? they’re dead skins!) if they weren’t treated. Hot? Not.

Wait for it …

We’d have to test on HUMANS!!!!

Newsflash: The fact is that we already do test new drugs on people. No matter how many animal tests are done, someone will always be the first human to be tested on. And are you ready for this? Out of ALL of the drugs that are shown to be safe and effective in animal tests … 92% of them FAIL in human trials because they simply don’t work, or are too dangerous. Womp wompppp. How’s that for life saving? More like life taking, right?

Listen here, I know what it’s like to want a cure—and that’s why it’s even more important that we move toward non-animal testing methods. Did you know that scientists cured cancer in the mouse over a DECADE ago!? Every year, billions of dollars are wasted on poisoning, mutilating, dismembering, stabbing, burning and torturing animals even though there is a better way. What can you do to stop this? Pass the info on and take action against companies that test on animals.

That’s right, kids. It’s almost time for the good ol’ annual Canadian seal slaughter to begin. Right now, young seals are on the ice in Canada with no clue that their time is limited—or that some people regard them as little more than coats. One lame excuse the Canadian fishermen use to defend the slaughter is that the “seals are eating all of the fish!” so the fishermen just have to bash their brains in … barf.

So, are seals responsible for the decline in the cod population? The simple answer is no: Overfishing and greed are responsible for a decrease in fish numbers. Blaming seals for disappearing fish is a convenient way for the fishing industry to divert attention away from its irresponsible and environmentally destructive practices. Done.

What myth have YOU heard lately? Check out the other blogs in our series to see what myths we’ve already busted!

Stay loud!
-Rachel

Hah-hah-haaahha…. I read a book about cod. It explained the history and conservation of cod, and also that the cod-fishermen were trying to pin the population problem on the seals eating the cod. It also gave the percentage of cod the seals eat each year. It was like 3%. So while the cod was being overfished, the cod-fishermen were blaming the seals. People are so stupid.

I dont have a myth to bust, but a HUGE benefit for me being vegan has been my clear skin. Ive had a few people actually KNOW i was a vegan just by looking at my skin. It helps with your complexion and by cutting animal products, you are cutting a lot of toxins from entering your body in the first place. My friend become vegetarian because she had terrible acne in highschool and as a veg, she saw improve, ent in 2 weeks! shes still a vegetarian now!

One I hear time and time again is “Even if you do stop eating animal products, it’s not going to affect anything.”

funny, pretty sure animals such as seals were naturally eating fish for um, millenia?? humans come along and 94% of the big fish population has gone….. in 50 years or something….. damn seals! clearly them! not the fact that we throw one third (1/3) of the already caught and thusly dead fish back into the sea…..

and whats this milk is natural bullshit?! meat heads arent doing their intelligence rating ANY favors, really now, we think you’re dumb, people! if you’re going to argue for an unethical cause you could do yourself the decency of TRYING to be smart about it!?

For week 10, please address the statement I get from my family all the time. “You have to kill those plants to eat them!”

When talking about veganism I always get told “If people didn’t eat animals, they would be extinct because they can’t survive with us anymore.”, do you have an answer for this?

I didn’t quite understand that one, but I have an idea. Ask them if they would rather be free and threatened or enslaved and safe from extinction. Those are different things.

If I were to choose between being enslaved and extinct, I’d need a long time to think. Living imprisoned and being constantly tortured and exploited only to be sent to slaughter, it’s probably worse than being dead; dead, at least you’re at peace. Try this out.

    “What I don’t know won’t hurt me.”
While this isn’t necessarily a vegan myth, when used as an excuse not to go vegan/vegetarian I get quite pissed off.
“But there are animal products in EVERYTHING.”
“My parents won’t let me/My doctor/dietician said I need meat.”
“But won’t that mean I have to take a heap of pills…?”
“You can’t eat chocolate when you’re vegan!”

“We were made to eat meat” We are able to, so we should.
We can punch people, and kill people. Does that mean we should?
    Is there a difference?

This would be funny if it weren’t so goddamn real! Humanity? OMG, we’re monsters, not humans. I bet a monster has a much bigger heart than us humans. =/

Seals are eating all the fish?
    WE’RE eating all the EVERYTHING!
To anyone who believes that “seals are eating all of the fish” are way too gullible, and are, quite frankly, idiots.

I heard from my biology teacher that they modify the animals so they have the human genome info in them. She said it started with the completion in 2007. I need to know more about it with the medical procedures to have a higher stance on this issue. Please help.

Why are we such cruel beings. we murder and “FARM” to facilitate the slaughter of our target animal beings. Then we rationalize the horror of what we do away.MY GOD, WE ARE BARELY OUT OF THE TREES!!!!!

“The seals are eating all the fish!” is probably the most hilarious vegan myth I’ve ever heard! Why can’t people get it into their minds that we are totally different then rats and bunnies?

I’ve been saying the same thing forever now! If we dont test on animals we have to test on humans! thats what needs to be done because ANIMALS AND HUMANS ARENT THE DAMNED SAME! of COURSE we’re going to have to test on humans because our bodies react differently to drugs than animals do, so testing on animals is useless!

Um, do you mind including a myth next week.
“All vegans/vegetarians have a slow metabolism”. My dietician told me this.

The seals are eating all the fish, never heard that one before! Thats so silly it’s almost funny!

I can’t believe we still test drugs on animals, if the tests are ineffective, pointless and cruel, why do we even bother!?

My favourite time of the week too!
Fur is green? And there are people who actually believed it?? How stupid can human beings be?
Haha, I keep hearing this ‘if we don’t test on animals we’d have to test on humans and if it’s dangerous, more humans are going to die’
Seals eating fish.. Isn’t that a part of the natural ecosystem anyways? Do we have to put our nose in everything?
