Although I’ve become a pro at reading labels for all of my beauty products at the store (to avoid icky, toxic and animal-derived ingredients), nothing beats the satisfaction I get from making my own natural, vegan, and cruelty-free skin and hair care goodies from scratch. This particular recipe is one of my all-time faves:
Homemade Vegan Shampoo
Mix all the ingredients together. Then grab an empty shampoo bottle (yahoooo for recycling!), and pour your DIY concoction in there. Don’t let the liquid consistency freak you out. This shampoo is super lathery, sudsy and wunderbar!
Enjoy!

This is the best shampoo I’ve every had, including the synthetic stuff ‘normal’, un-dreadlocked people use! I’ve tried using just plain castile soap, but it never fothed up like I wanted, making it hard to get everywhere on my head. This, thought, with the oil, made it perfect!
Note, Dr. Bronner’s peppermint castile soap as plenty of fragrance. Don’t add more!

Another option to at least get off of the premade chemical shampoos/ crazy expensive premade totally natural ones (just my experience! $10 a bottle was too much for this art student!) is baking soda and water. Just mix about 3 tablespoons into a bottle of warm water and shake your heart out for a few mins. Pour it on and let it soak for about 3min, its not bubbly and all and may feel strange at first but it does wonders for me and everyone I’ve gotten to try it (about 15 friends and family freaked at my straw to silk hair transformation and tried themselves)
Thus far great for thin and thick curly or straight hair. Not sure about African American hair as my friends with that hair type still aren’t quite won over yet.

For anyone who wants to know: As of 2012 you can find PURE LIQUID CASTILE SOAP online from a variety of places. So far, Amazon.com is the cheapest.

Try this for a conditioner
After using your regular shampoo and rinsing as usual, you can use this great homemade, totally vegan, organic conditioner to make your shiny and healthy. First you need:
1 c. water
juice from 1/2 lemon
and 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar
massage into hair and scalp
rinse w/cold water after a few min.
The lemon cleanses your hair, and the vinegar balances your hairs natural ph balance.
