Video footage from Spain’s Almería province shows a farm worker jumping on terrified piglets—while laughing—after he’d reportedly trapped them in a hallway.

Both the man seen in the video and the man who recorded it were charged with cruelty to animals for the abuse, which left 72 piglets dead. Nineteen were reportedly killed during the incident, crushed beneath the man’s weight, while the other 53 died later from their injuries.

This is not an isolated incident. Abuse is common on factory farms everywhere, including in the U.S.

Here’s some of the routine cruelty that won’t make it onto your newsfeed:

Mother pigs are often confined to tiny cages called gestation crates while they’re pregnant and then moved to farrowing crates while they nurse. Both gestation crates and farrowing crates are so small that pigs can’t even turn around! They’re forced to stay almost completely still for nearly their entire lives and are artificially inseminated over and over again until they’re killed. If you’ve ever been on an airplane in a coach seat, you know how cramped it can be. Now imagine being stuck in that airplane seat for your ENTIRE LIFE, without being able to stretch, get up to use the bathroom, or even look behind you.

Piglets are taken from their mothers when they are as young as 10 days old. Farmers chop off their tails and castrate them—all without painkillers. Those who don’t grow quickly enough are killed.

One method that’s used to kill piglets is called “thumping” (slamming them into the ground). This is a standard practice in the industry

Piglets who aren’t killed by “thumping” are confined to barren, crowded pens until they’re old enough to be crammed onto a transport truck and shipped to the slaughterhouse.

After the pigs are unloaded, workers attempt to stun them, but because stunning isn’t always performed properly, many are still alive, conscious, and able to feel pain when they’re dumped into tanks of scalding-hot water.

If you don’t want to support cruelty to animals, the easiest way to help is by leaving pigs and other animals off your plate. In honor of all the pigs who suffer and die on factory farms every day, try vegan!
