We recently got word that Novel, a songwriter, producer, performer, and all-around artist extraordinaire, is learning a lot about animal rights. We decided to pick his brain with our favorite Five Questions—check him out!
1. Why did you want to get involved with peta2?
I wanted to get involved with peta2 because over the past couple of years, I’ve become aware of the torture that animals endure just for the sake of food or fashion for humans. The images of animal cruelty that I’ve seen are pretty shocking and disappointing. As a result, I’ve tried to quit eating meat, but it’s been one of the most difficult things for me to do.* I’m not perfect and far from a saint, but I have at least reverted to eating more free-range and natural foods. And I’m totally against wearing fur! There are so many other fashion alternatives to fur, but I just think that many people do not realize the cruel treatment to animals just for the sake of style.
With the efforts of peta2, more people will become educated on animal rights. One of the best ways that I can help with this effort is to get involved with peta2.
2. Animals killed in the fur trade are electrocuted, beaten, and even skinned alive. With so many fashionable alternatives to fur, there’s no reason for anyone to buy the real thing. That being said, what is your response to the following fill-in-the-blank sentence: “People who wear fur are _______.”
People who wear fur are influenced and misguided by the media and major corporations into thinking what’s cool and what’s fashionable. Don’t be a follower, be a leader and make a difference.
3. Have there been any bands, artists, or books that have influenced your views on animal rights?
Yes, Leona Lewis has influenced my views of animal rights. I’ve worked on both of her albums as a producer and songwriter, and we’ve also sung a duet titled “Myself” that was released in the U.K. While working with her, I’ve never seen her wear leather, fur, or even touch a plate with meat on it. She is one of the most caring and sweetest human beings that I’ve had the pleasure to work with.
4. Are there any other animal rights issues that you feel passionate about?
Honestly, and sad to say, I’m just learning and gaining more knowledge on these issues.** Thanks to peta2 and a few friends for shining some light on this matter, I am more aware and conscious of the importance of animal rights. Hopefully, I can influence kids to learn more also.
5. What’s up next for Novel?
Well, as an artist, I’m a free agent now and currently working on an album called Calligraphy scheduled for a fall 2011 release. I’m also producing and writing for other artists. I have a song that I wrote for Trombone Shorty and Kid Rock called “Mrs. Orleans” due out this month. I’ve been working with Joell Ortiz, who’s in the group Slaughterhouse, signed to Eminem’s Shady/Aftermath, and also producing and writing for a new artist, Leon Thomas, from the show Victorious on Nickelodeon. Lately, I’ve even extended my creativity to video directing and editing, and several of the videos can be seen online.
Here are links to a couple of viral videos that I’ve shot, directed, and edited:
