Free Stuff Friday: 'Elephant Girl' Graphic Novel

Posted October 29, 2010 by peta2 staff

Are you a graphic novel fan? Well, check it out. Not only are we giving away a graphic novel, but it’s one that deals with the plight of animals in captivity and human exploitation.

Elephant Girl by Coco Hall, is a heartfelt story that parallels the lives of a young girl, Shashi, and Kala the elephant. They were both kidnapped in India as children, smuggled into the US, and became victims of captivity. Hall keeps it real in the book with both her depictions and language (it’s gritty, raw, and contains some adult language and scenarios). I’ve personally read it, and it’s intense—such a good book. I can’t wait for you to read it, too!

For your chance to win one of five copies of Elephant Girl, comment below with your thoughts on how human rights and animal rights are tied in together. Entries must be received by November 5, 2010. Five winners will be chosen at random and notified on November 8, 2010.

Animals have the same rights as humans. Even though we cant understand what they are saying they have feelings, and emotions just like us. When there cold they shiver when there hot they pan, when they are happy the jump around, and when the are sad they put they head and tail(if they have one) down. Animals are different from humans but so similar in so many ways.

Aiight, heres what I think in a nutshell: God made people, God made animals. He made them for us to eat, BUT NOT TO TORTURE!!!! Therefore, we are abusing our powers…not right. Thanks and have a nice day(:

Human rights and animal rights always come down to the same concept the powerless and the powerful.
In some cases the abused powerless are discriminated are humans, in some cases the abused powerless are animals.
Both of them break the heart of anyone with compassion and a strong stance for equality.

And of course, humans are animals, no matter how hard we try to deny it with our little technologies.

Soon, people will look back at animal captivity with the same embarrassment that they remember the holocaust. Human slavery is going out of style to a great extent, and it is only being replaced with the massive enslavement of animals. We need to reexamine our selfish society and really think about whether we can afford to keep stealing animals’ lives and freedom for the sake of a lousy profit.

Humans are animals, too. It’s time we take a stand with our non-human brothers and sisters and prevent the mass exploitation that continuously occurs. It’s delusional-in fact it’s sociopathic to think that we can inflict such harm on others without having the consequences come around and bite us.

They are tied in together because Humans constructed human rights, and Animals rights were also constructed by Humans. Animal rights are based on the idea of human rights and how it should be applied to animals aswell.

People who mistreat animals tend to have less respect for humans as well. It’s important to give animals rights just like humans get.

what’s the difference between Human Rights and Animal Rights? Nothing. Animals feel jut like we do. Care, just like we do, and Love, just like we do. Is it because they look different? Well don’t we all look different from each other? Is it because we have voices and they don’t? Its just another language, like any other. A shutter scream has the same meaning wether if it was from a human or from an animal.

There is no difference. We are born to live the life that we are given, for it is a gift that is not meant to be wasted, or taken away by someone else’s hands. Animals have the divine right to live life as any other living thing on this planet, for there is no difference when it comes to a life.

animals and humans should have the same right because there just as much living as we are. It’s not like your going to cut off someones nose because its too big so why cut off a chickens beak. Or would the government lock you up in a little cage(even if u havent commited a crime) just for u to wait to be tested on a poked and proded in a way u shoukdnt have to be. it’s wrong on so many levels and PATHETIC. animals and humans are no diffrent. dogs and cats eat the same food we do just in a diffrent form. cows and pigs shouldnt have to suffer just for human consumption or beauty. has nobody ever herd of natural beuty? its what your born with inbrace it and love it

Animals should have the same rights that humans have, because although we may not be able to understand one another in a literal language, it doesn’t mean that one is more “savage” or “ignorant” than the other. Same issue we had with slavery and the English/Spanish coming to the Americas. If aliens were to invade the earth and we were to become their new favorite meal because we taste good, would any of that be any different from how humans treat animals? Sure we could try to communicate and say “Please don’t eat me!” but reality would show that we don’t speak the same language, or even communicate the same, and we would be inferior beings and not have the RIGHT to live. I see animals as equals in this sort of light.

Animals deserve all of the rights humans deserve (if a cat wants to get on the witness stand…let him! He has a right to a voice too!)
If we wouldn’t treat our fellow man a certain way, what makes it right to treat animals like that?…

I think human and animal rights go hand in hand because a lot of people that abuse animals later hurt humans so if we can stop it before animals then the world would be a wonderful place. This has been studied by scientists and everything. I also believe that if people can treat animals right then they have broken such a big barriar that racism would be gone;) and people that treat other creatures with respect may also respect themselves (no more self harming, sucide, and self bashing)
hope every got what I was trying to say!

Human rights are way above animal rights and I think that’s wrong. Just today, I heard a kid talking about animal testing. He said that he’s glad they do it on animals, rather than humans. I confronted him and said that testing on animals is ridiculously wrong. I believe animals deserve way more rights than they get.

I wish people would have a heart and help stop animal cruelty. Some people just don’t get it, and THINK it is ok to hurt animals. They are just so wrong, when ever I see someone being mean to an animal I always tell them to stop no matter how big they are even if they are bigger than me. Wich is mostly always the case.

I believe Human and Animal Rights are intertwined all the way back to the beginning: We were created to have dominion over the earth and all of the animals. That was our only assignment. Through sin, we have distorted the meaning of our dominion to mean total control of and freedom to do as we desire, regardless of the consequences. We need to turn back to our origins and seek for the betterment of all creatures, human or otherwise. This is what we were created for.

Human and animal rights should be one in the same, as many animal rights activists have already noted. As individuals become exposed to the cruelties that animals undergo to provide for other ‘animals’ (i.e. humans), they think twice about condemning such creatures to an untimely demise. It’s all a matter of educating the greater public about how the rights and liberties that we hold true in our society should be equally reflected in the rights of our other animal companions.

When we make a distinction between “human rights” and “animal rights” we’re really making an imaginary line between two groups that both actually fit under the same category: animals. Human rights ARE animal rights because humans are animals too!

    Definition of animal:
A multicellular organism of the kingdom Animalia, differing from plants in certain typical characteristics such as capacity for locomotion, nonphotosynthetic metabolism, pronounced response to stimuli, restricted growth, and fixed bodily structure.

Sure, we might be able to colonize and control this planet (for now), but that does not make us our own special, superior kingdom. When an animal is harmed, whether human, dog or cow, they experience unnecessary and preventable harm. Just because we cannot communicate with other species does not mean that we can choose their destinies, and there is no reason why one species should believe that they are any more deserving of rights over other species. The rights of ALL animals (human or not) need to be regarded as equal and important.

Human rights and animal rights are one in the same. I’m not going to say animals should be granted the same rights as humans, because not all humans have the same “rights”. It is disgusting to me how some humans are treated, just as it is disgusting how some animals are treated. In this case, we should begin breaking down the word “rights”. Are we talking about natural rights? Freedom? Not every human lives in a country based on freedom… just as not every animal lives around decent human beings. It is sad, and pathetic, but a reality. So many humans are quick to say we are more intelligent than animals, therefore we are the dominate creatures. If we are so intelligent… why are we harming other creatures for things as petty as fur coats? We, as humans, have the power to use our intelligence and stop torturing/abusing/killing animals. It is not a naturalistic case of survival of the fittest… we don’t need to eat animals to survive (we know this because of our intelligence) and we darn sure do not need fur coats (or reptile boots, or leather purses, etc) to survive.

Humans are animals. People seem to forget that. We both feel pain, we both love our family, and we both are sometimes more concerined with how our own species is thriving then the world around us. We, as humans, have evolved to the point where we can think criticaly about our world, and this makes us think we are above all of the animals. But, we all started out the same. The only problem is, humans have ruined the world.

If we don’t have compasion in our hearts, for all creatures, then our world is doomed. Becuase if our society turns it’s back on the less fortunate, animal and human alike, then when it is the people who turned their back on the world who need help, who will give it to them.

Animal rights and human rights are definetely tied together. Farm animals are treated badly. Humans who believe in a certain religion that others don’t believe are treated badly. It’s all tied together. Animals and people should be treated with respect. Animals and people who aren’t seen as real animals and people are used for slavery. Like humans, some animals are protected from being abused in certain countries, and vice versa.

Animal and human rights must be treated with equal regard, otherwise we’d be displaying a form of moral schizophernia to differentiate between the two. If you look at the issue of gay marriage, for instance, to deny one sect of the population the right to marry whom they choose establishes gay Americans as lesser in status than heterosexual Americans. This mentality is reflected then in pop culture and trickles down on the day-to-day lingo, substituting “that’s gay” for “that is stupid”.

In the same way, denying animals rights strips them of their innate status as non-human beings. We have a moral obligation to activity fight for these rights. But more than that, we must resist and triumph over those who would act on their ignornace and/or prejudice.

As a middle school English teacher, if I had a copy of “Elephant Girl” I would incorporate it into my classroom to help promote these ideas.

Human rights and animal rights are one in the same. People get so caught up in knowing everything about everything and using it for the greater good that they forget, we’re all one. Humans and animals, because humans ARE animals. You can say we’re more evolved but you’d be lying. people kill just as much as animals do the only difference is that the majority of killing people do is not neccesary, its either sport, murder or “for survival” even though thousands of people world wide have proved that we can live without killing to eat. At least when animals murder its for survival and they dont torture their food, they just eat it. Animals should be given just as many opprotunities to live happily as people. it isnt fair that animals defensless-ness is exploited to make it seem like its only right to eat them. if you look closely at people of the world, almost any religion you’re a part of says its wrong to kill, well since people ARE animals then why would you kill your family? I say family because we’re all related. because human behavior is often a flaw of ours, we aren’t any more superior then the other animals, who are also intelegant and have feelings and can establish right from wrong. Animal rights are human rights and should be protected as such.

Animal rights and human rights are both important. They are tied together because neither humans or animals should be abused. We are the same in some ways. Animals can love so can humans. Animals can be gay so can humans. Animals feel pain. We do too. The difference is the language. We can speak up for ourselves they can’t. Slaughterhouses require workers and often violate both the workers and the animals rights.

  • 1631 days ago

I think people dont even realize they are violating animals rights because we are so self centered and selfish about ourselves and seem to think we are like a superior good before animals. We assume our intellectual skills are more important and greater then animals, therefore giving us the right to do as we please. Animal skin furniture, or couches and even bags and shoes sicken me. Fur coats, and hats are the bloodiest as well as ugliest and deep cruelity towards fashion i can ever grasp. I think human rights and animal rights are completly tied together because we breath the same air, eat, drink and sleep. We reproduce, and take. Another thing alot of people forget is animals CAN FEEL JUST AS WE CAN. They feel the pain of heartbreak, the pain of torture and the pain of abuse, and never forget. We do not find it acceptable to torture human beings and yet what makes them any different? We can do things they cant do and they can do things we cant do. Nobody is superior over anyone, every living and feeling thing on this planet should be considered as equals.

One day, everyone will appreciate the ALF like they do with MLK and such other activists. Plus, eating animals is deadly for people so feeding meat to people is like abuse.

Most people say that animals are less intelligent than us humans and so we are superior. Our rights are more important than theirs because we have more potential. We are able to control whether they live or die and so we have the right to do that. We live they die. That’s our right?
But..use that in the case of me and somebody with a mental disorder, say Down’s Syndrome. I am, most likely, more intelligent than them. Not through their own fault, but by the natural way things fell. Does that mean that I have the right to dominate them and kill them off as I please? Do their rights fall away because I am more intelligent? No, they don’t. Exactly the way an animal’s right to life and QUALITY of life shouldn’t be cancelled out in the same situation.

I think human rights are very important! Nowadays not everyone is treated equally but should they? Yes. However, animals deserve allot of rights too, because they are just like us. We deserve to be born free and live without terror or pain, and we should celebrate this together, hug a chick, walk a dog, pet a cat, hug a friend, be compassionate.

Human Rights and Animal rights, to me, are tied together because of progress. Over the years it has been scientifically proven that animals and humans are built the same, it has been historically proven that animals and humans can fight side by side, and it has been proven that certain animals can co-exist in our communities. Because society can acknowledge humans with the rights to be married to the same gender, illegalize having abortions and killing other humans, then animals also can have the same rights. The meaning of equality hasn’t changed over the years, but how it is demonstrated has.

personally, i think human rights and animal rights are deeply rooted within another. I mean, if you think about it, doesn’t the way we treat beings behind closed doors reflect our levels of compassion? If we do not show compassion to our innocent creatures that means that when it comes to mankind we are not so blind to differences within each other, and less likely to free ourselves from prejudice. Every being deserves to live a life free from fear, prejudice, and ignorance. To free ourselves from evil is to show compassion to every being, no matter how small or different they may be.

We are living creatures that live, feel, and well… care. We might look different but we have many similarities. We care for our youngs. We also have many friends and family memebers. We both feel the pain. We both think in our own ways. We both deserve the right to be respected and cared for. Both, animals and humans dont deserve pain.

I think animals should be treated the same as humans, with respect!!! All animals are like us & need love no matter what they look like. Animals deserve freedom to not be killed for fashion or eaten. Animals need to be protected so it’s up to humans to protect & help them to not be extinct and live so our children can see them someday!

Animals are defenseless & need love no matter what they look like, so lets give love and compassion to ALL animals!!! Animals deserve to have freedom to roam around & not be hunted for food or fashion!!! and to be protected by all. FOOD & FASHION SHOULD BE CRUELTY FREE!!!

human and animal rights are tied together because they are both living. some animals(and people)are better treated than others, while some are abused. the only difference is they don’t skin us alive therefore we think we can dominate them.

Both human rights and animal rights are very very important. they are linked in the sense that we harm people who are minorities and have no voices, the same thing we do to animals. Every human should have fair and equal rights and because we are able to speak we need to speak up for those who cannot such as animals. They have feelings too and we need to stand up for them because they cannot fight against their owners.

Human rights and animal rights should be the same but they are sadly treated very differently. Animals have minds and should be treated as equals though they are treated like something we don’t mind destroying because so many people do not. It’s hard for people to see that animals are the same as us, just not in the same form, because, like humans, it takes time to get to know them and understand who they are but it’s well worth it if you put the time it. Without human rights we would be treated the same as many animals are and that’s a frightening thought because animal rights have been butchered and hacked at to strip away the parts that make it hard for certain people to control them, like many factories and other people often do as well to human rights. I think we all need to take a step back and reevaluate the way that animal rights are treated and how we would feel if that was done to us and that’s what Peta is all about.

Animal’s and human’s equally deserve rights, and sadly the main thing that tie’s them together is the fact that both animals and humans alike can have their right’s abused. Examples could be animal cruelty or poaching etc, and humans are sadly put down in multiple ways, whether it is racial, for personal reasons, regardless, animals and humans rights are tied together as every specie deserves something, and that in a way gives them rights. Animals unfortunately have dismal right’s compared to human’s, at least we have a voice, they don’t.

Rights should be applied to any being that can live, feel, change, appreciate, and simplify as well as understand complexness. Humans would obviously be the first to come to your mind saying this — but that might only be because we feel we are superior to any other being. Our intellect has given us the power to understand farther and better ideas that animals, yes. But we use this to an utmost disadvantage. Humans have abused the gifts we were given in such a way that animals simply cannot. Animals live in their environment, in a state in which the environment affects and changes them, and that is how it has always been. But humans have created a new way of living, in which we influence and adapt the environment around us for OUR needs. because we have the ability to do this, we gave ourselves rights and declared the human race superior to all other organisms on this planet, as if we owned them and not lived WITH them. Animals have been put aside as meaningless as these ideas progressed and grew into the mind of people as our mechanisms increased and technology grew exponentially. A fish can’t build a computer. A chicken can’t sign a contract. But they feel and they scream and cry and feel pain — in fact, MORE pain than most of us are ever forced to endure. We cause it to them, and it makes us unpure, mean, sick, cruel, and selfish. There’s even a video of a girl THROWING PUPPIES INTO A RIVER. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/31/girl-sparks-animal-activi_n_701011.html

Animals are parallel to humans and deserves the EXACT same rights as us.

Animals are living, breathing, feeling, emotional, beings. They have all of the same characteristics as humans, other than body shape, and their means of communication. In most cases animals are more intelegent, and reasonable that humans are. If we gave dolphins, or whales a few thousand years, and a clean slate to build on, I’m sure they would find a way to create a somewhat urbanized community. Animals are treated like nothing because people are ignorant, careless, and horrid. They do things only for their benefit, and personal interests. They classify beings by race, ethnicity, religion, age, gender, country, schools, cities, gangs, and even species. All of these things, save age, gender, and species, are completely made up, and if the world didn’t have prejudices these things would not matter. People are horrible, and they enjoy making themselves feel better. As a species we are scared, cowardous, rude, and selfish. Mind you, not all people are this way, but the masses are, whether it be for ignorance sake, or for lack of heart, or for the love of evil. Humans as a species are bad for our planet. We have made ourselves parasites. We feed off of these poor creatures, that are no better, or worse than we are, for our own personal needs, not thinking of the effect we have on them. We are not the same as animals, we are worse than them.

Humans are just another species of animals. What makes us better than any other species? Nothing. We all feel pain, we were all created by the same force through evolution, we all feel pain and sadness and pleasure. So how are our rights tied together? Because we are equal and feel we deserve rights just as much as they do. And as claiming dominancy on this planet we have a right to protect others who are weaker or can not speak up for themselves. We do no have the right, however, to hurt, or abuse, or exploit those weaker than us? What is the difference, really, when you get down to it, the Europeans exploiting the Native Americans when they first came here and scientists exploiting rats or rabbits for the sake of cosmetics? Nothing, that’s what’s different.

This question makes me think of the movie Food Inc. where they talk about how eating factory farmed food isn’t just an animal rights issue, it’s a human rights issue. The companies convince people who are hurting for money to start farming chickens, and force them to take out huge loans, but don’t pay them enough to every pay off the loans they had to take out to start farming for them in the first place. The workers are treated badly, the animals are treated badly, and nobody wins.

Sentience. This is what links Human Rights and Animal Rights. Humans only have “rights” due to our abilities to feel. Animals feel in much the same way humans do (or how most humans should feel, ignoring the monsters who hurt animals of course) thus they should have equal rights to humans, and hence animals rights exist (or should where they don’t already).

for some reason animals rights and human rights are different. i dont get why though. Me are all living breathing life forms so why arnt we all treated the same? Just because animals have yet to evolve as much as us that gives us the right to push them around and treat them like dirt? It is not right how people treat animals. ok, if people dont like to grab a bug and bring it outside so they dont kill them ok (i do that so i dont kill them, or i just ignore them) but throwing chickens into crates and hanging them by shackles and slitting their throat while they are still awake? Its wrong and people should treat them like they treat their family. just cause someone cant talk does not mean they dont hav feelings. </3

The idea that we are all one, living or dead, that we don’t simply disappear but return to Mother Earth is crucial to linking the two ideas. If we are one with fellow human beings and animals, then how we treat animals obviously effects us, and believe me it does. When people create suffering for animals, they create suffering for themselves. To be able to develop this habit allows for one person to act in the same way towards other human beings. I believe this is also linked to how we view the environment.

We are animals although we dress up and pretend we are superior to other animals we have the same basic needs and desires.
A lot of it boils down to ignorance getting in the way of common sense and experience. People genuinely believed that the slaves couldn’t feel pain, that women weren’t intelligent enough to vote etc. Despite that fact that those views were challenged by what they saw everyday.
If you look at the images from WW II, sex trade cases, slave trade, child slave labour and then compare them to that of an animal testing lab, a factory farm, a dog fighting case they all look incredibley similar. And usually its the same rights that are being taken away everytime and usually its all for profit.

The greatest of human atrocities exist and persist because of a misconception that humans are at the same level as animals, domesticated or otherwise. This clearly stems from the evolutionary perspective of seeing men women and children as ‘homosapiens’, nothing more than another species on this rotating globe of land and sea.

The solution, some might suggest, is to elevate man. The problem with this is that those who continue to view humans as animals (a scientifically backed viewpoint) will only be empowered to treat man and beast exponentially worse.

A more noble solution is to ‘level the playing field’. The differences in humans and animals pale in comparison to the similarities. When a group of people like strict vegans dedicate their lives to encouraging love and respect for animals, they are simultaneously helping the human condition.

World peace results in man peacefully coexisting with his or her neighbor, and until we can peacefully coexist with animals there will never be world peace.

Humans and animals are not the same. That’s the argument everyone uses to justify cruelty, eating meat, testing on animals, what have you.

The most gentle and respectful of religions promote a vegetarian/vegan diet, and why is that? From ancient times, the wise have considered the cruelty of animals to be a reflection of a person’s ability for cruelty. Lauter on, it doesn’t just extend to animals, it ends up as an abuse-feeding cycle that poisons the soul and eventually ends up as harming people.

“There will be a time when men look upon the murders of animals as they look upon the murder of men.” This quote is reflective of how people and animals have the basic right to live.

We as people need to understand that benevolence comes from respect for life in general. From animals, to young people, we are all living beings on the same planet. There’s only one planet, and we should respect all who reside in it :)

It makes for an overall well compassionate person.

When one group feels superior to another, there is a feeling of domination and dominion. No matter what the issue, if someone has the idea of superiority over an “other,” then that feeling can become infectious. In history, this feeling is how people convinced themselves it was okay to own slaves, okay for Nazis to kill Jews, okay for white people in the US in the 50s to mistreat blacks, okay for the KKK to exist, etc. Presently, the idea that one person can elevate their ego to feel power over another is also how we are still having debates over whether it is okay for same-sex couples to marry. My asserting their dominance over gay couples, hetero-normative people can feel okay about themselves, feel powerful and build their ego. This exactly echoes how people feel dominion over the animals. If they had to take a second to stop and consider how the animals feel, to take a moment to look through the eyes of another, then their poorly-built facade of lies would come crumbling down around them. And most people are not comfortable enough with their own self to let the lies stop. What’s left then? A self, an ego that is honest and true. The majority of people are scared of that core.
