Free Stuff Friday: Meat's Not Green Tote Bags!

Profile photo of Ryan-H

Posted December 18, 2008 by Ryan Huling

One of my favorite peta2 campaigns is “Meat’s Not Green” for lots of reasons—the biggest being that I’m tired of listening to people talk about recycling and changing light bulbs and driving hybrids while chewing on a chicken sandwich. Newsflash…you’re not an environmentalist if you still eat animals. Plain and simple.

As the UN points out, the number one cause of global warming is raising animals for meat. Everyone needs to get that message loud and clear, and we want you to help us spread the word. So this week’s Free Stuff Friday is for the “Meat’s Not Green” tote bag.

Meat%27s_Not_Green_tote.jpg
They’re organic cotton canvas and big enough to hold a bunch of groceries, books, clothes, whatever you want to cram in there. Plus, these babies are machine washable in case you’re concerned about that sort of thing.

Want to be one of five lucky winners? Then comment below with your thoughts about why you can’t be a meat-eating environmentalist.

This contest ends January 2, 2009 and the winners will be chosen and notified by January 6, 2009.

Just so you know…by commenting here, we’re taking that as acknowledgment that you’ve read and agreed to our privacy policy.

Also by commenting, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions.

Good luck!

being a meat eating being and trying to be “green” at the same time is impossible… live stock farms create more pollution in the atmosphere than EVERY motor vehicle in the entire world

Not eating animals means you can decrease their death’s. Seeing how they get tortured makes me feel anger toward the person responsible for their killing. Its not safe to eat them either, they could carry some sort of disease. I love animals,I do see them as a human being, only the problem is that they can’t defend themselves. But us ,peta2 members are trying.

Im so glad someone has seen this also!
I, sadly work in a “superstore” of sorts and am so tired of seeing cute little teeny-boppers wearing peace signs and paying 19.99 for a bag that says Eco-chik or organic is super or what have you.
Just to pull out thier tye-dye wallets and paying with a credit card- then they still “need” a plastic bag for thier bag! I was under the impression that you got the reuseable bag to USE it!
Then they flip-flop on over to the food stand and buy chiken sammiches or nasty hotdogs! People need to think about the meaning behind the “trendy” Green movement. It’s one thing to wear a cute green shirt or bracelet, it’s another to actually live it.
And whatever all animals they put in those hotdogs arn’t living now at all!

You can not be a meat eating enviromentalist, it’s just hypicritical. animals are a part of the environment and farming them takes up a hell of alot of land. Plus meat production causes a lot of polution.

The short and sweet answer – because meat production uses up too many resources compared to plant farming.

  • 2437 days ago

Well it’s just plain and simple. The meat industry causes global warming. Like Mcdonalds does. 1)McDonalds(and this goes for every other cause)sometimes causes droughts by placing their animals in a grassy area for a long period of time.
2)They cut down forest to use as the cups, bags, fry holders, whatever else they have and them cutting down forest causes global warming.
So you can’t be a meat eating enviromentalist because all that happens everyday. Using different lightbulbs and having hybrid cars isn’t gonna help a whole lot. That’s why they should be vegetarians or vegans. They’re wasting their time on all this research for a better “green.”
    Well they are wrong..

  • 2437 days ago

    VA:F [1.9.22_1171]

To say your an environmentalist and still contribute to the number one cause of pollution is completly hypocritical!
There are many reasons why meat is so unenvironmentally friendly. Number one is that animals are part of the environment and killing them for our food is just as bad as tearing down trees. Number two is that the land these animals are raised on were mostly once forests and homes to many plants and animals. Doesn’t sound very environmentally friendly to me. Number three is that the waste and pollution this industry produces is of a horendous amount. It pollutes our water, air and land.
No one can be an envornmentalist and support that. By becoming a vegetarian or vegan you are stopping all that from happening to our planet and animals.

You just can’t. environmentalists are supposed to protect the environment and everyone in it, that goes for animals too. you can’t protect and murder at the same time. not to mention the meat industry causes pollution and global warming. a meat eating environmentalist is an oxymoron.

I think the whole idea of someone
    being an environmentalist and eating
meat is stupid. Sure your saving trees
Recyling and all that other stuff,
but your making it worse by eating
    animals. Raising animals for meat
    makes global warming worse.
Not to mention it uses up our water
supply, and If they stopped using the
Food to feed the animals we wouldnt
have to advirtise those comercials asking
people to donate to kids who dont have food.
So if you want to stop global warming.
Go vegitarian. If been vegitarian for three
years, and it has made a huge impact on my life.

You CAN NOT be a meat-eating environmentalist because enviromentalists help the earth and killing animals that live on it is definetly not helping. me- living in iowa- is disgusted by the rep thats put up to us of meat eating people. not everybody does!! i hate animal cruelty and knows that it hurts the enviroment because the machinery it takes to kill the animals produces CO2(carbon dioxide) that ruins the ozone layer. That’s partialy the reason I became a vegetarian.

You can’t be a meat-eating environmentalist because as an environmentalist you assure that you care about the world you live in, and that you are truly commited to the cause. If you eat meat of any kind or any type of animal products, you are contradicting yourself and youre being a part of the actions that harm the atmosphere, contributing to animal cruelty and global warming, therefore, you wouldn’t be a environmentalist…
In other words, you cant be a meat-eating environmentalist because such thing doesnt exist.

I ultimately consider myself both a vegetarian and a environmentalist. I strongly comply with the rules of vegetarianism and try to buy everything environmentally helpful. I love the thought of the ice caps no longer melting.
You cannot be a meat eating environmentalist because eating meat supports killing the earth. More than half of the water supply in the U.S. goes to raising animals. Greenhouse gas emission… is the problem Cars? Trucks? Planes? Trains? How about them all together? Nope. Raising animals for food tops all of that. How about the rainforest? What kills the rainforest? Each year more and more rainforest is cut down for cattle raising. Yup, you guessed it! Cattle raising destroys quite a bit of the rainforest.
Pollution? A huge problem in the U.S.! Every minute more that 80,000 LBS of wastage is put into our water, etc. What is the wastage coming from? Yup that’s right! Raising animals for food. If you are an environmentalist and you eat meat, you are nothing but hypocrite.

We are wasting natural resources on industrialized animal farming when we could be taking those resources and taking care of people directly – it makes no sense to continue these outdated practices, from a sustainability standpoint. The current process of raising animals for food is not sustainable, and for anyone to believe he/she is “green” while continuing to promote factory farming is beyond ignorant and hypocritical.
If you’re going to be “green”, you have to live sustainably, and this involves turning away from the current methods of animal farming.

There is nooo way you can be an enviromentalist and still eat meat. The UN ways that raising animals for food causes more green house gases than all the cars, planes, ships, trains, and SUVs in the world combined. Also, raising animals for food uses more than half of all the water consumed in the US. An area of rain forest equivalent to seven football fields is getting destroyed by the minute to make more room for grazing cattle. And thats not even begining to talk about the waste that the animals make! The animals in the meat industry make about 89,000 pounds of waste. 130 times more than everyone combined in the entire country! To produce only one calorie of meat, you have to use 10 times the amount of fossil fuel that it takes to produce one calorie of plant foods. Just by taking that one bite of meat, not only are you helping to destroy our planet, but you are also supporting the cruel mistreatment of animals. So after learning all this stuff;; how can you really be an enviromentalist? Your destroying the rain forests your supposed to care ohh soo much about, your creating more of those green house gases you care so much about, and your using up the fossil fuels. The best thing you could do for our enviroment is to go vegetarian, or even vegan. Just remember, MEATS NOT GREAN!!!!!

Humans are primates. And in the wild primates only eat meat when they kill and cannibalize an enemy. This is a vicious brutal act that even scientists don’t know the reason for, it isn’t for nutritional reasons.
WE are humans however, more highly evolved then wild primates. We should be evolved past that state of cannibalism.
I think the ultimate diet of the future will be a plant based diet, one that each person can grow within their own house, back yard or on a balcony, and there won’t be any need for food industries. We’ll share what we grow with what other people grow, trade our food and goods, and there will be no money, no profit off the suffering of fellow creatures.
Industrial meat factories are the source of our descent into CO2 madness. The cooking conveniences of industrial food after the Wars made it possible for people to afford expensive cars. Roads were built to accommodate industry and thus civilians used these roads as well. Soon the whole population was dependent on road and factory for everything, when just a scant hundred years ago we got all our food from real farms, orchards and gardens, or we lived and worked on those farms ourselves. I remember picking peas with my Nonna. I remember the wheat harvest. I remember ripe tomatoes on the vine and my mother bent down planting flowers, a red handkerchief around her hair.
Now the landscape is stained red in the blood of animals and human beings who die from the cancerous pollution. My mother is slowly dying from not being able to breath anymore because of carcinogenic chemicals. The farm went under and is barely able to support any vegetables. Acres of land empty, lifeless. All the neighbors are selling their farms to get money now.
Industry, progress, factories, have killed humans, animals and the heart and soul of North of America. Its time for a change.

A 2006 UN report concluded that farm animals are responsible for a fifth of the world’s total pollution, and is 60% more damaging to the planet than all of the pollution caused by every car, truck, plane, boat, ship, and train combined! They also produce 35-40% of methane gases, and 65% of nitrus oxide, which, compared to CO2, has 300 times more potential to cause global warming.
Each vegetarian saves 100 animals a year. There are almost 7 billion people on this planet. If everyone of us was to stop eating meat, we could drastically reduce the amount of pollution that is destroying the ozone layer.
I, myself, am a very passionate tree hugger. I’m not only a vegan, but I recycle everything, I bring my own bags to the store, I shut off lights when I leave a room, I don’t use plastic bottles, etc.

Meat is the worst of all worlds.
It’s production is destroying the rainforest, it uses too much water, it eats up food that could be used to feed the hungry and it’s the #1 cause of global warming. It’s also expensive, hard to prepare, unhealy, cruel and downright disgusting! And people still gobble it up because they think it tastes good. That’s just pathetic!

You cannot refer to yourself as an environmentalist and then eat meat. It’s just not possible. To support such a cruel and polluting industry is to kill the earth; the absolute opposite of what an environmentalist wants to do.
The wastes from factory farms pollute so much. The gases from cows and their fecal matter is one major contributing factor to greenhouse gases and therefore global warming. To eat meat is to support this.
Raising livestock for food takes up one third of the total land available in Canada and the United States. It is estimated that if these farms were discontinued, and instead we grew rice and grains, world hunger would be a thing of the past. To eat meat is to support starvation.
After ten years or less, the land used to grave cattle is virtually useless. It has been trampled to the point that it is hard and brittle, all the nutitious soil blown away by the wind. To eat meat is to literally destroy the land.
Millions of animals suffer daily so that people can enjoy meat with their meals. I don’t see how it could possibly be enjoyable. I once asked my mother if she could ever kick a chicken or slit a pig’s throat or beat a cow with a prod. She looked at me and said of course not, while eating a hamburger. Buying meat supports that industry, so whether people actually commit the crimes or not, all meat eaters are animals abusers. To eat meat is to support cruelty.
And so, in conclusion, I think it’s quite clear that eating meat is to be the opposite of an environmentalist. It’s not that complicated to see why. The message is out there, but people just won’t listen. I personally hope they hear the truth soon, before it’s too late for our little planet earth.

It is inevitably hypocritical to call yourself an environmentalist, if you are not a vegetarian. and i could sit here and type for hours explaining why. But honestly, you must question your morals if you eat someone three times a day, without even thinking about it.
    dictionary.com’s defenition of environmentalist:
“2. any person who advocates or works to protect the air, water, animals, plants, and other natural resources from pollution or its effects. ”
working to advocate and protect animals is a part of being an environmentalist. Therefore, most of todays society are flaunting oxymorons when they say “I eat meat and i’m an environmentalist.” They are two contradictory terms.
but the innitial message is don’t eat anyone, human or animal.
Because whether or not you are an environmentalist, you should have morals enough to not promote murder.

Because the fact that you are eating meat takes away your power of wanting change, like, if you think is wrong kill animals for their fur, you shouldnt be eating them… Love for other is what makes us do good stuff, its hard to explain with words, but if everyone care about the planet they would care about other animals. What makes us different from other animals? Cos they can’t talk?

    1) Herbicides, hormones, pesticides and nitrates are all used extensively in the meat industry
    2) 26 billion tonnes of topsoil are lost annualy from over-grazing farm animals
    3) A meat based diet uses 40% more fuel then a vegetarian one
    4) Over half of the worlds grains and almost all of the soybean harvest is fed to animals
    5) An estimated 1,000 species become extinct annually from rainforest destruction caused by meat production
    6) Over 125,000 square miles of rainforest is destroyed annually to raise cattle

meat is not green because meat requires more resources to bring meat to the market. for example, you need more land to feed animals to produce meat than to produce produce for consumption. therefore, more forest must be converted into pastureland.

Being a meat-eating environmentalist is a contradiction in itself because not only are you supporting the unethical treatment of animals which true environmentalists are opposed to but you also help fund the factory farms in which these animals are raised, abused and killed on. Besides this, you also support deforestation due to the fact that more and more forests are being torn down and destroyed to build these disgusting factory farms. By continous consumption of meat, those so called “environmentalists” also contribute to the wastes produced by the farms from which their meat comes from. Water systems are polluted by these factories releasing and dumping fecal matter and wastes into local streams and rivers, thus increasing the risk of speading infectious diseases to the public as well as ruining the marine ecosystems affected by the dumping. In addition to the above mentioned effects caused by consuming meat, one must also consider what these meat products are packaged in; non-biodegradeable styrofoam and plastic wrap which furthermore adds to the earth’s overall pollution and global warming, in turn leading to increased climate temperature and risking the lives of thousands of animals which could not thrive in warmer environmental conditions. If someone was truly environmentally-conscious and genuinely cared for the welfare of the earth, they would consider all of these devastating effects caused simply by the consumption and support of meat and meat producing/packaging factories. In the words of Gandhi, “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way it’s animals are treated.” How much can you truly say about yourself or the nation which you live in when you still support this unneccesary cruelty? If you really wish to be a true environmentalist “You must be the change you wish to see in the world” (Gandhi), which speaks greatly of the diet that you keep and the lifestyle that you live.

You can’t be an environmentalist and eat meat because you contradict yourself in doing so. No matter how much you recycle and use energy saving machinery, when you sit down and eat that dead animal, you contribute to the largest cause of pollution. The only way you can be a true environmentalist is if you go vegetarian, which reduces the CO2 put out there by a agreat differance.

There are many reasons why you can’t be a meat-eating environmentalist. There is the obvious reason that raising animals for food actually threatens the environment, but I think a deeper message lies within. The people who care enough to take the time to recycle, to pick up trash, conserve electricity, plant trees and flowers, and use their knowledge and skills to come up with effective and innovative ways to live without harming the Earth are all selfless people. They simply care for the well-being of the planet, and all who inhabit it including humans, animals, and plants. People with such heart and soul would never be able to dine on animals knowing the horrible torture and deaths they faced. Those same people could never expect a cow or chicken to be raised simply to be slaughtered. I’m an environmentalist; I care about keeping our Earth healthy and safe, and I care about the well-being of all living beings who share this Earth as our home. I’m also a vegetarian, because I care about the animals who want only to flourish and live their lives on this home. An environmentalist cares, they have morals, and they want the world to be better for all, and so do both vegetarians and vegans.

I’m in 11th grade, and last year I was required to do a research paper on something I felt strongly about. I chose to write about vegetarianism and how we are working to protect and renew our environment. The hours of research I went through taught me things I could have never imagined. Such as, the amount of land we spend growing food for cows could be used to eliminate hunger in third-world countries! We waste resources, gas, water, land, ect..on driving these cows and chickens and pigs all across the country! As one of the only vegetarians in my highschool, I get comments everyday like “You’re ruining our environment. Just eat meat!” But I wont. Meat isn’t green. Meat is wasteful and CRUEL.

Calling yourself a meat eater and an environmentalist is technically being hypocritical. Everything in the environment is intertwined with the meat industry and the growing demand for meat. If somebody says they care about the environment and they eat meat it can be put into a situation like this…
You eat meat, demand increases. When demand increases more pastures have to be created to breed more animals. The new pastures require habitats of other animals to be demolished as well as deforestation for new land. Less trees, more CO2. Furthermore more cows, more methane (a greenhouse gas).

I think that the environment doesn’t consist merely of the planet but everything and everyone in it. People consider themselves as environmentalists because they care about life. Being alive and having the right to live isn’t exclusive to humans – it goes for the rest of the animal kingdom as well. How can you consider yourself to be “pro-life” when in fact part of what’s keeping you alive is that you’ve killed an innocent creature to sustain your hunger? It’s a bit contradictory, don’t you think?

You Can NOT be a meat eating environmentalist for multiple reasons.
1- greenhouse gasses produce more air pollution that all the cars in America.
2-The Grains Used To Feed The animals YOU eat could be used to feed starving children in different countries.
3-Ever Look at what meat is packaged in?
mostly Plastic Wrap and Styrofoam. Is that Green? Absolutely Not.
4- 70% of water from the Amazon rain forest is used for feeding cows in slaughter houses.
5- Animals are transported in large trucks several times. thats a lot of air pollution to add to #1
6-One Cheese Burger uses enoguh fossel fuel to drive a small car 20 miles and water for 17 showers.
7- Animals raised for food produce 130 times more poop per second than our ENTIRE country.
How Can That Be Green? It Not. Becoming a Vegetarian Or Vegan Is They Best Way To Go Green. Plus You Get The Bonus Of Helping Animals.
    Go Veg.
    Meat Is Dead.

I mean, think about all the carbon and other fumes porduced on meat farms. It’s disgusting! And if you think about it, it goes even deeper than that. I mean, evironmentalism is all about being good to nature and animals are part of nature. By eating animals, you’re directly destroying nature, and ENJOYING IT! So meat eating environmentalists are just walking oxy-morons! (I hope I spelled that right.) The bottom line is, you can not eat meat and be a true environmentalist. You just can’t! There is no such thing as a meat-eating enviromentalist because to make and package meat, it creates so much pollution. Enviromentalist means to protect air, water, animals, plants, and other natural resources from pollution, and raising animals creates pollution, endangering animals. Fecal contamination can kill other animals and fish, and can be absorbed in through the ground, and be transported to rivers, which can serously hurt humans. The excretement of animals are often emptied out into oceans, making algae production skyrocket, leaving little oxygen in the water and making ‘dead zones.’ The feces also gives off toxic chemicals, that can seriously hurt humans.
Eating Meat also wastes resources. It wastes land, water, energy, and food.
It doesn’t pay to eat meat.

Not only are you not an environmentalist if you eat meat, you are also not an environmentalist if you eat at most fast food chains. Most of these restaurants have mass amounts of rainforests cut down in foreign countries where it is cheaper to farm cattle (and where animals rights laws are scarce, if present at all) just to make a cheap hamburger. As well, it takes much more water to produce crops as food for the animals as well as water for the animals to drink than it does to just provide water for crops for human consumption. Also, the amount of manure produced by the animals is too large to decompose naturally so many farmers resort to dumping excess manure into water ways which contaminates ecosystems for miles around. Furthermore, many animals that are farmed produce large amounts of methane gas which is harmful to the ozone layer and plays a key role in the destructive greenhouse gas effect.

Every bit of meat produce for human consumption requires massive amounts of energy. From the water it takes to feed the animal, grain (the gas for the grain to actually get there), and the output of the animal…there are large quantities of waste and a HUGE carbon foot print.

i dont think its so bad that many environmentalists eat meat. they can’t do everything to save the planet, so why not just let them do what can?
and yes, actually, people can be environmentalists and eat meat. don’t get me wrong, i’m all for environmentalist vegans/vegetarians, but lets get real here–we should be happy we have anyone working to save the environment at all.
saying that someone has to be vegan/vegetarian to be an environmentalist is like saying in order to be considered a musician, you must play piano. but that’s ridiculous; a lot of the greatest musicians don’t know how to play the piano, though it is a very important instrument and a lot of people know how to play it. but its not the only instrument that matters. its the same concepts.
like i said, i think it would be amazing if all the environmentalists were vegans or vegetarians, but we should be happy they’re doing everything they are with fuel efficient cars, efforts with recycling, solar powered energy, etc.. so while they save the environment with something simple, why don’t we start saving the environment in the ways they are not by convincing people to go vegan/vegetaian?
because, think about it, it makes sense that they focus on changing light bulbs and driving fuel efficient cars because its something easy. next time you need to change a lightbulb, just buy this new kind. next time you need to buy a car, buy a hybrid instead of a hummer. it will save you money in the end, and they’re simple changes. but going vegetarian or vegan is a big commitment, and less people would be willing to make that change than to do all the littler things.
so i’m not saying its ok to not do anything about meat polluting, but i think we need to think a little more about why they do what they do and take action ourselves in this case.

Ahh I love that tote!! But yeah..
Slaughterhouses are a major player in global warming, responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. The major sources of pollution are from animal wastes, antibiotics and hormones, chemicals from tanneries, fertilizers and pesticides used for feed crops, and sediments from eroded pastures.
If more people were vegetarians(or even better, vegans!) there would be a huge increase in the amount of grain available to feed people elsewhere, reduce pollution, save water and energy, and cease contributing to the clearing of forests!
We could save the Earth! And resolve most of the hunger problems around the world.
How amazing would that be? :] If only…

It is simply not possible to be a meat-eating environmentalist. The reason for this is simple : meat is one of the largest causes of green-house gas emissions. First of all, meat is basically the slaughter of animals. Animals! Environmentalists should love the environment and all of its inhabitants equally, not kill them for no good reason, especially when there are obvious meat alternatives.
Secondly, animals are put in trucks and delivered to the slaughter-houses, which could be MANY, many miles away from where they were raised. This in itself, clearly, causes tons of greenhouse gas emissions because of the gas or diesel used along the drives.
There are so many reasons why a meat-eater can’t possibly claim to be an environmentalist.
Any true environmentalist would know this, through what research they have done and what information they already knew.

Meat is most definitely NOT Green. Why? Because of the animals that are brutally and cruelly slaughtered each day. Their waste goes into the water we drink and clings to the air we breathe. But it’s not there fault is it? No. They don’t freely line up to become the latest lamb chop, humans are the ones who are truely killing Mother Earth and her baby greens. Each time an innocent living creature is killed for meat, fashion or scientific purposes, it brings the planet one step closer to it’s demise. Leaving the lights off is a good thing. Recycling is a great thing. Cease from eating meat is the best thing. So much energy is used to run factory farms and it just doesn’t make sense. first, if youre calling yourself an evironmentalist, how could you even eat meat that comes from animals? animals are a part of the environment and youre going back on your word by trying to “improve” the environment.
second, livestock farming generates 18% of the planets greenhouse gas emissions. and thats a whole 5% MORE than all the cars, trains, planes, and boats, COMBINED!
third, animals manure on the livestock farms generate nitrous oxide (a greenhouse gas) which has 296 times the warming effect of CO2, that contributes even more to global warming.

So many people and products these days say they are “green” because it’s in vogue. Anyone who has a unique thought in their head would realize what being green actually means… and if they’re able to think on that level, it would be easy to realize the detrimental facts on the environment of being a carnivore. After all, the amount of feed that has to be harvested to “grow” the animals is at least two to one of the weight people eat off of them- it’s disgusting. Meat is not green!!

Plus, producing grains and veggies and stuff just to feed what they want to eat doesn’t make sense. Just cut out the middle man and eat what they eat. You can’t be a meat-eating environmentalist because the farts from cows pollute our air so much, which clearly doesn’t help global warming. I can’t imagine how much electricity, and water is wasted on raising animals, when there are other alternatives. If you can stop eating meat and make a big difference for the good of our earth and it’s people, or eat meat and know your contributing to global warming, then why not? Like the bag says, meat’s not green, so if you promote farmers to raise more animals for slaughter, then clearly, you shouldn’t be calling yourself an environmentalist. I think it’s gross, all the pollution that comes from animal slaughter houses and farms, yet people still eat meat, and then think they’re saving the earth. People need to open up there eyes and realize that there are other alternatives.

This is an exert from a paper I wrote for a resource and environmental management class. I could rant on about the topic, but I think it’s important to think critically about the issues around meat and the environment (and not just blindly accept facts from either side, without seriously putting thought into what goes into what you eat, not only environmental consequences, but social, economic, and ethical considerations too) and open up a dialouge between people so everyone can be educated and learn from eachother.
Diet plays an important role in ecological sustainability. Behind any consumed product lies an entire lifecycle and resulting effects on the environment. Therefore, what one chooses to eat will necessarily have environmental consequences, the extent of which is largely based on the food choices that one makes. Many argue that a plant-based diet is more ecologically sustainable than its meat-based counterparts, and diets lower in meat and animal product content are associated with smaller ecological footprints. The environmental argument for plant-based diets encompasses a number of ecological concerns about livestock farming and its consequences, including the inefficient use of land, water, and energy resources, water pollution from concentrated livestock holdings, overgrazing, over fishing, deforestation, and global warming.
The production of meat requires more land. According to Leitzmann, a nutrition ecologist, land requirements for meat-protein production are 10 times greater than for the production of plant-protein (2003). Crops for feed must be grown on separate land and then transported to the livestock; while using the cropland for direct human consumption cuts out the need for livestock space. Arable land is becoming scarcer, yet the demand for meat is at record level. This has resulted in a increasing demand for animal feed, which is largely supplied by soy crops, many of which are grown in deforested areas of the Amazon (Cathcart, 2006). In the USA, since 1967, a rate loss of one acre of forest every five seconds has been caused by meat eating (Hill, 1996). As arable land is becoming scarcer, it makes ecological sense to conserve land as much as possible by growing crops for human consumption instead of for feeding livestock. Similar arguments can be made for water and energy use. For example, by adopting a plant-based diet, Westerners are able to receive twice as much nutritional benefit per liter of water used in food production (Postel as cited in Compassion in World Farming Trust [CWFT], 2004).
Another concern arises from the amount of pollution and waste caused by food production. Through the dumping of body parts, animal dung, and other animal waste byproducts, the meat industry is responsible for about 80% of all water pollution in the USA (Hill, 1996). Livestock also emit large quantities of methane into the atmosphere, a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide (Suzuki, 2007).
This is just a taste of some of the ecological arguments addressing the impacts of a meat-based diet. Further discussion of this topic is beyond the scope of this paper, however it is sufficient to say that meat-based diets have been shown to have significant negative environmental impacts and thus it is necessary to consider alternative plant-based systems.
However, it is important to note that there are also negative ecological impacts associated with certain plant-based diets, and it is necessary to take many factors into consideration. For example: “Long distance air transport, deep freezing and some horticultural practices for producing fresh vegetables may lead to environmental burdens for vegetarian foods exceeding those of locally produced organic meat” (Reijnders & Soret as cited in Kirwan & Morris, 2006, p. 204). Further discussion can be found in the article “Vegetarians: Uninvited, uncomfortable or special guests at the table of the alternative food economy?” (Kirwan & Morris, 2006).
Thus, while veg*n diets are generally more ecologically sustainable, the effect is lowered if the diet contains many highly processed foods that have traveled long distances. This is why I’m a vegetarian with vegan tendencies who tries to eat whole non-processed foods locally and organic when possible. The “lowering” effect, is also balanced out when taking ethical and other concerns into account (such as animal rights and social conditions of factory farms).

The waste contaminates the water killing millions of fish and other marine animals every year. Ground water is begining to also be contaminated and will take thousands of years to restore. Natural ecosystems such as wetlands and rainforests anr being deastroyed to make room for grazing and growing grain for factory farm animals.

There are various reasons why you cannot be a meat eating environmentalist. I think that for the most outstanding reason why all environmentalist should be vegan is because an environmentalists believes in conservation, preservation, and restoration of the environment. We recognize that we are part of something bigger_the earth as a unified ecological system. By consuming animals we negate that which we believe in. We alter the ecological balance and negatively impact the earth. Plus, we undermine the place of animals. An environmentalist can never feel or act superior to any animal.

It’s just an unneeded hassle, we don’t need meat
in order to get by on a daily basis and without
it we’d probably be better off.

You cannot eat meat and be an environmentalist mainly because of all the pollution that the meat industry creates. Mass animal breeding facilities that provide animals to the meat industry creates millions of tons of waste every year, which pollute soil and waterways and create unsanitary conditions for people living in the area. These individuals have lower quality of life because they’re exposed to so many toxins. So, not only is meat production bad for the environment, it’s bad for human well-being.

Environmentalists should not eat meat. If a person had a thorough understanding of the environment, he would realize that removing livestock from their natural environment has detrimental effects on the lower ends of the existing food chain. Also, he would understand that by consuming food from higher levels of the food chain, he is consuming a higher quantity of toxins and cancerous material per meal.

Meat travels thousands of miles from the farn to the butcher to the store to your home, and all the way it is being refridgerated, so it wastes A LOT of gasoline and energy. In addition, meat is usually packeged in things that are not biodgradible, such as styrofome, which cannot even be re-used, however, when you pick up those vegetables in the produce aisle, there is no problem reusing the bag, and tofu tends to come in a recyclable plastic tub. And your veggie nuggets and burgers? You can just recycle the box. Lastly, meat has to be cooked at high temperatures for a long period of time, which wastes a lot of energy. As you can see, there are many reasons that meat is not green.

You can’t be a meat-eating environmentalist because the meat industry is the greatest contributor to global climate change. The slaughter industry has more emissions than all of the cars in the world COMBINED. By going vegetarian you reduce your emissions more than if you had bought a hybrid car! Some people even say by being a vegetarian you reduce your emissions more than a handful of people getting hybrids.
I’m a vegetarian because I can’t be an environmentalist when I am supporting the biggest problem the world has. Also, animals do not deserve to die to fill our bellies.

The world is funny in the majority, I find, because yes, it is incredibly environmentally detrimental to support the production and raising of meat products and while people preach preach preach, practice takes too much will power for most of them. Not only does the raising of animals (esp. cows) cause a lot of atmospheric damage through a massive over production of methane in the air (that wonderful odor you smell while driving up the 5 freeway in CA) the pesticides and hormones they are fed with get into our Earth, into out ground. That Earth even, the large swatches of land the companies purchase to “farm” on, is diluted of all of its nutrients and stripped of vegetation, causing a lot of other problems for the weather. Where is the water supposed to go on the flattened round? Where are the plants that would otherwise be there, cleansing our air and promoting healthy large scale ecosystems supposer to live? Not to mention the factories they animal products are handled in. All the energy it takes to over produce any product has to come from somewhere and that is a problem in and of itself. Coal fired power plants provide a majority of the energy we in America use for electricity and the amount it takes to run a factory, I’m sure, is astronomical. There’s a couple reasons; I wonder how that tastes?

I am an Environmental Science major and recently went vegetarian because you need to practice what you preach. (I also spent some time on PETA’s website and realized it was the thing to do.) If you want to tell other people about saving the earth, you need to start by doing it yourself. I think living by example is one of the best ways to get through to people. I know that factory farms are not only horrible for the animals, but they are horrible for the ozone and for the environment around them, or down river from them, or even in their wind current. Factory farms are capable of polluting far and wide whether they are near or not. So by being a vegetarian I am reducing the amount of meat demanded from these places and reducing the amount of pollution they produce. Horray for smaller carbon footprints! :)

the meat industry simply creates far too much CO2 with the transporting or the animals for any meat eater to call themselves a meat eating environmentalist. not only that but they cut down rain forests which are precious to us as a people to convert CO2 back into oxygen. but they are also needed as a habitat for the animals.
animals raised for consumption create too much feces which is also bad for the environment and seeps into our water systems.
you cannot call yourself a meat eating environmentalist.
caring for the environment is more than just recycling, it is also caring for everything in the environment including animals.
i’m a vegan and i can say that i am an environmentalist.

There are a number of reasons why you can’t eat meat and be an environmentalist at the same time. The number one reason the Amizon rainforest is being destroyed is cattle ranching. The lungs of the earth are being slaughtered so cattle can be slaughtered. Is this right? Hell no! Not to mention the amount of pollution that meat production creates. It’s the same with vegetarians who wear fur or leather. It’s hypocritical.
(In regards to Lilli’s comment) My high school had a “Green Team” and I also found it silly that here we are trying to help clean up the school and community, yet they’re supporting the meat industry, factory farming and cattle ranging, which is destroying our planet. Tsk tsk tsk.

you can not be a meat eating environmentalist because if you eat meat and you truly think your saving the planet by changing light bulbs and recycling, your not doing the best that you can. Like you said, the #1 cause of global warming is raising animals for meat. we need to inform all “environmentalists” about this. if they care about the earth so much than they should become vegetarian! They shouldn’t expect that changing a few light bulbs at home can save the entire planet, but not eating meat can make a differance a whole lot more, along with changing your light bulbs 😀 we need to get the message out that MEAT’S NOT GREEN!

I’ve was an environmentalist long before i was a vegetarian. For the longest time i was searching for more i could do until, while doing a project for school, i found out about the meat industry contributing to more than 18% of global warming. At that moment i became a vegetarian. Think about it, they knock down rainforests, trees and plants that are helping our earth and are food and home to thousands of animals just so they can have land to raise their cattle and such. Not to mention they build these awful factories that treat animals horribly and contribute daily to the immense pollution causing global warming. I was completely unaware of the meat industry’s effects on our Earth for a long time and i have been trying to spread the word to people as much as i can. I think this bag is a great idea because there isnt enough awareness about it but the idea of going green is getting bigger and people need to know that they’re completely contradicting their “green-ness” everytime they pick up that chicken sandwhich.
    and i love the bag!

I have this friend who tries to pass himself off as the world’s most amazing environmental activist, even going so far as to berate his friends and acquaintances for not buying a hybrid car. But when asked about whether or not he would consider going vegetarian, he shrivels away from the issue and returns to his regular habit of complaining about light bulbs.
The fact is, driving a hybrid and changing your light bulbs are mere token gestures when you’re still eating animals. In order to match the impact of going vegetarian, you would have to quit driving or showering… so why aren’t more so-called environmentalists doing it? And why, with such a lapse in responsibility toward the planet, do so many feel the need to lecture about that very responsibility?

A “Meat-Eating Environmentalist” is a huge oxymoron! Many of us vegetarians often hear the redundant notorious “Why don’t you eat meat?” question. The answer for us all is always simple, but might be different! For me, I do not eat meat because I care. I care about protecting the rainforests. I care about innocent creatures and their right to survive without suffering. What about topsoil depletion? You cannot eat meat and say you care about topsoil depletion! Then there is the issue of world hunger. I want to stop or prevent that. You might as well drive a hummer and hunt on your freetime if you don’t care about energy conservation. I reall care about reducing energy consumption. Then there are the very basic natural aspects that I care about. First of all, what about the air we breathe, and the water in the lakes, rivers, and oceans. Its too hard not to care about all of these things. Last but not least, I care about my own health. I am a vegetarian, and I care!

    Well,
1.Meat is dead animals. Animals breathe out Carbon dioxide. Plants take in carbon dioxide and let out oxygen. We breathe Oxygen. Earth-some animals+trees=Less Trees & Less people.
2.The processes used to slaughter animals mechanically waste more fuel. Like fishing boats,Automatic murder machines,Machines to drag around corpses, machines to dye and inject artificial things into meats etc.
3.The more animals we kill in their natural habitats, the more empty trees we’ll have. Trees with no animals are most likely to be cut down and made into whatever..WE NEED TREES TO LIVE AND SO DO OUR ANIMALS!
I could probably think of tons more reasons, but my fingers hurt :)

My roommate cant even put his cans in the recycling bin…We had to put the whole bin in the kitchen. Being green is a lifestyle change. You need to change the way you live your life to be an environmentalist. No killing is done humanely anymore and I cant eat something that I don’t know whats been sprayed or injected into it. We are using important resources to raise animals for slaughter that are going to run out to soon. And meat literally is not green. Ew.

Being an environmentalist is all about saving the planet and the creatures on it, right? Well then eating those creatures is a little bit hypocritical. That’s why I became a vegan. I was vegetarian before, because I just can’t stand the thought of eating another being’s flesh, but veganism seemed like the next natural step when I wanted to protest using and hurting other beings. I’ve been vegan for just about a year now, and I’m the healthiest I’ve been in a long time. So, even if someone wants to “Go Green” in their diet, and yet they still eat meat, well then they aren’t really grasping the concept that to “Go Green” means to save Earth, and all the creatures on it, not just the humans.

The point is that Americans are consuming more and more meat as time goes on which is not healthy for the planet or for the body. I’ve argued this point several times, and always include the environment as one of my 3 concerns as a vegan.

Most of the reason to be an environmentalist is to save the planet and ALL who inhabit it. Saving the planet and stopping global warming isn’t just so the humans can live in peace and mess up more of our planet and kill more of our animals. Lots of meat eaters have pet dogs and feel strongly for the save the kittens and save the blue whales. But why not save the animals there slaughtering and eating while sending their money to the save the dogs. Maybe I’m ignorant but why is killing dogs any different that killing cows and chickens?

Ha, a meat-eating environmentalist, that’s an oxymoron if I’ve ever heard one. Environmentalists are individuals who struggle to resolve environmental problems such as uncontrolled population growth and air pollution, just to name a couple.
According to researchers at the University of Chicago, the food people eat is just as important as the car they drive, when trying to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Animals are just as much a part of our environment as the air we breathe; we should be protecting them, not eating them for lunch. If environmentalists are so keen on going green, then they should do the planet a favor and stop eating meat!

Because the number one cause of global warming is raising animals for meat, then a meat eater would be causing an adverse effect on the good being done by actual environmentalists. With the help of your website I wrote an entire persuasive essay on being a vegetarian. In this essay I quoted facts and statistics about the animal industry on the environment because I thought that if someone’s conscience and personal ethics about killing a beautiful living, breathing creature wasn’t enough then maybe the guilt of destroying the environment would get them. I recieved an A on said essay and hopefully next time I’ll be able to write an essay on veganism!

I think this is a great message. It`s very true that you can`t be a meat eating environmentalist. Killing animals is producing a massive amount of pollution, which is obviously not good for the environment. In the process of humans killing animals to eat them they are killing their own species by producing the following through pollution:
    * Reduced lung functioning
    * Irritation of eyes, nose, mouth and throat
    * Asthma attacks
    * Respiratory symptoms such as coughing and wheezing
    * Increased respiratory disease such as bronchitis
    * Reduced energy levels
    * Headaches and dizziness
    * Disruption of endocrine, reproductive and immune systems
    * Neurobehavioral disorders
    * Cardiovascular problems
    * Cancer
    * Premature death
Not to mention the effects that dumping has on the enviorment. The blood left from the animals and other parts that cannot be used and being put somewhere and I can bet you my bottom dollar that it`s not being done in an environmentally safe way.
As well, the chemicals that are used to feed the animals as well as used for other things are produced in the environment which usually kill off all living plant life.
People who are environmentalists and not vegans or at the very least vegetarians are hypocrites and it`s about time they know the facts!

You can’t be a meat-eating environmentalist because it’s complete nonsense to think that eating meat is good for the environment, it pollutes the air so much! First you need to use valuable land to grow food for the livestock, then you must process that food and transport it to the “farm” (if you want to call it that) and transport the livestock to the slaughterhouse, then to the grocery store and then to your house! It’s insane! Also just the cruelty that goes on is absolutely disgusting, whether it’s good for the environment or not it’s just wrong to support this industry.

I hate it when people refer to themselves as “environmentalists,” when they are still eating meat. Raising meat for slaughter is a top reason for pollution due to the amounts of water, energy, and resources used. More than half of all water in the United States is used for raising animals. The amount of greenhouses gases used weighs more than those produced by transport and factories combined.
In our school there is this thing called the “Earth Club,” don’t get me wrong, saving the planet is great. But in my opinion these people are uninformed, and hypocrites. If they knew about meat production maybe they would think twice about having those chicken nuggets.

I mean, factory farms, all of the animal waste that ends up polluting waters and killing other life, not to mention the cost of running these horrible places, energy bills are enormous. Fast food restaurants use torn down rain forest land for their cattle. I don’t know about you, but whenever rain forest land is torn down to feed people meat in a different country, that should be a red flag it’s not environmentally sound.
