Free Stuff Friday: Vegan Condoms

Homelessness isn’t just a human problem. Animal shelters in the United States must euthanize nearly 4 million dogs and cats every year because of simple math: too many animals and not enough worthy adoptive homes. The good news is that you can help prevent this; it’s as easy as ABC—Animal Birth Control! The main tenets of ABC are: never breed or buy animals; always adopt; and always spay and neuter. Simple, right?

Unfortunately, not everyone has gotten the message. Sixteen percent of the approx. 90 million owned cats in the US and thirty percent of the approx. 73 million owned dogs remain unsterilized. That’s 35 million animals who are unsterilized! (And that’s not even counting the millions of “unowned” animals who are struggling to survive on the streets.)

Watch this video to learn more:

Ready to help? We’re giving away 5 boxes of 100 Glyde condoms (ultra licorice flavored) that you can give out to your friends in an effort to educate them about ABC (and to encourage them to be safe in their own sexual practices)! Let them know that dogs and cats can’t use condoms, so in order to prevent pregnancy they need to be spayed and neutered. And don’t forget to sign here to pledge to end animal homelessness.

To win, comment below with why everyone should practice their ABCs!

FYI – these condoms expire in April of 09, so distribute them quickly and tell everyone about the expiration date!

Oh, and this contest ends January 9, 2009 and the five winners will be chosen and notified by January 16, 2009!

All entrants must be at least 18 years old. By commenting on the blog and entering the contest, you are confirming that you are 18 or older. Also, by commenting here, we’re taking that as acknowledgment that you’ve read and agreed to our privacy policy.

Also by commenting, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions.

Be safe!

PS – Does this remind you of the sex talk your parents had with you?

Practicing your “ABC’s” can help save animals in a weird way. If the liter of kittens or puppies were never born, then they wouldnt have to deal with the cold hard lonely streets..

    Hmmm
    I don’t agree with this
    Giving out condoms…
Isn’t it like making a joke of this stuff?
Like, people you give condoms to aren’t gonna take you seriously if you go, “Oh, by the way, make sure yer cats or dogs don’t have sex!”

First off I’ve never had the sex talk with my parents and I’m glad that I haven’t(that would be totally weird…when is not weird). I think it’s a good thing for us to save these animals from homes where they are being tortured.
By not letting them breed is a good way for us to help those future pups from not being tortured. Also we can’t find good homes for them that easily. People need to realize that hurting animals is just totaly wrong…Why don’t people see that just by hurting animals is just hurting themselves. Seriously people think about these household pets who are totally being tortured. If we don’t stop it then who will.

People should practice the ABCs for their animals because of the failing economy. With the economic downturn, animal shelters are receiving less aid and are having to euthanize more animals than ever before. About 75% of all cats and 50% of all dogs that wind up in shelters are euthanized. A smaller population of animals equals a smaller amount of animals that cannot be taken care of.

Animal Birth Control saves the lives of animals who are already here on earth and need our help. All the animals me and my younger sister own have been saved.
My rottwieler named shiela was abused by her previous owners. She had cigarette burn marks and was kept outside on a chain no longer then four feet. If I would have bought a dog instead of saved Shiela where would she be now?
My cat named Sparx was living in a dumpster behind Borders Books. She had been attacked by another animal. Her tail was broken and he fron right leg was gashed and infected. If I would have bought a cat from a pet store she could very well have died from infection or starved to death.
We also have four baby turtles that we have found back in our woods stuck in trash from the construction they are now doing to build new apartments. all three turtles are being nursed back to health. two are missing a foot, another an eye, and the other has a crack in its shell.

EVERYONE including people who have had children should practice their ABC’s because overpopulation is a problem not only for the planet but also for the stray dogs and cats that don’t have anywhere to sleep or an owner to feed them. These stary animals get almost always die of disease and they spread them before they die. Imagine if we lived that way…

Why practice ABC’s? Because if we don’t expect to see more animals in pounds that are being put down because they can’t find homes for them and more hungry strays wandering the streets. People are already overpopulating the world and we have birth control and condoms. Let’s not overpopulate the world with suffering dogs and cats as well. it’s easier to go to the vet once and have your pet spayed and neutered than it is to remember to take a pill everyday or to remember to grab a condom before you go to a party or on a date. Let’s not be lazy! Remember your ABC’s!!!

I know how important is ABC, I’ve lost a dog about a 1 ago when she was having her babies, she had 3 before she past away they were raised by me and my parents like their where my brothers. ABC is important not only to control the animal population but for you not to lose your animal. I have 5 dog and they all are spayed cause I won’t lose another one of my babies and you should do the same, is an expensive procedure but is worth it

My two cats came from the wild – they breed like crazy up at my cottage and there is at least 3 new batches of kittens born every year (just in my little area alone)…we see about 15 new kittens wandering around…we see about 2 full-grown cats by winter time. They are hit by cars, homeless, hungry and feral- sometimes eaten by king fishers too.
We saved my two cats (kittens at the time) from that fate. We caught them (humanely!) kept them, neutered them…and then did the same for 4 other kittens and gave them away to good homes! Our long term goal…to neuter all of them and stop the saddness.
oh and ps. we also adopted our dog from a shelter, she is the best behaved dog i have ever seen. She was abused in her last home yet she is so gentle and never barks. She’s had a fanastic life with us. Everyone should do the same!

To win, comment below with why everyone should practice their ABCs!
I can give you three to four million good reasons to practice your ABCs: according to the HSUS, between 3 and 4 million cats and dogs are murdered (it’s not really “euthanasia” if the animals are healthy) each year, for no reason other than a lack of homes.

Everyone learned their ABC’s in preschool or so. But now it’s time to learn a new ABC- Animal Birth Control- A way to help prevent future cruelty, over population, spread of disease and deformation. With this form of ABC we can help put a stop to animal suffering, isn’t that what we’re all here for? To create new and use old ways and ideas to help animals for the better. So lets sing our ABC’s, lets sing ’em to the world.

whether animal or human there should never be unwanted pregnancy when it can always be prevented. animals don’t know like we do that the offspring will suffer, therefore we need to step in and make sure there are no animals that go without a loving home by preventing their creation. just as we protect ourselves from such, animals deserve the same right!
*Plus vegan condoms = wild sex, lets get down and dirty!

I volunteer at my local animal shelter and as a result, I’ve seen firsthand the consequences of letting animals – and their hormones – run wild. Dozens of unspayed cats are found daily, many of which are pregnant or diseased, and a terrible choice has to be made: which ones will most likely be adopted and can be kept, and which won’t have a chance in a million of finding a new home and will therefore have to be euthanized? The sad truth of the matter is that people don’t bother spaying their animals, which would completely solve the problem of thousands of stray cats roaming the streets. Not that cats are a problem – on the contrary, they’re wonderful creatures – but most cities have laws against animals that are out of bounds (i.e. anywhere other than on a leash or in your home). If you truly care about animals, have yours neutered! I know my dogs are!

My college roommate sold her house to move into a dorm this semester, leaving her 2 cats to stay secluded in her dad’s upstairs bathroom because her step-mom is allergic. Before she sold her house, she was going to get her 2nd cat spayed and after 5 months, she never got around to it. She got pregnant and had 2 kittens about 3 months ago. Those kittens are left in the bathroom as well and can only be tended to every day once she gets out of classes.
Her dad told her she had to get rid of the cats and they were only there temporarily. She claims she never has time to look for a home for them but she spends almost all of her free time sitting on her but playing World of Warcraft. With as much trouble as it is nowadays to find a home for 2 cats, adding 2 kittens into the mix is even harder for my lazy ass roommate. Oh, and did I happen to mention, she’s 27 fucking years old?
Her laziness and lack of responsibilty is neglect to those poor animals. I think my roommate needs to be taught her ABC’s as well as a nice kick in the ass for being too damn negligent to needs other than her own.

It’s always going to be a shelter/spca etc. All of my cats were either from the spca, or we adopted them off the streets ourselves. why we should practice our abc’s you ask? because every animal deserves a loving home.

No one is willing to pay the money for these poor animals to become spayed….so in result i see many female animals coming in pregnant and not having a home. I swear i have seen soo many puppies that i couldnt even think to name every single mother. It’s horrible. We currently dont have very much funding but we get by. It’s soo discusting to watch all of these poor animals wait and wait for someone to adopt them. PLEASE USE ABC!!!!!!! I see thi eveyday and it breaks my heart. BE A HERO

Yea! a homeless cat is an unhappy cat, and so please spay/neuter your animals!!! Domesticated animals such as dogs and cats have been bred for hundreds if not thousands of years, by humans, for the traits that people desire, such as size, color, fur, and appearance, rather than the traits that the animal needs to survive on it’s own out in the wild. So, cats and dogs are now at a disadvantage, and their lives in the wild are harsh and they are not well suited for it. SO, don’t breed, don’t buy, and tie your pets tubes! they will thank you for it! Now gimme the condoms!!! all that talk of licorice is makin me want to GET SOME!!!!!

Wow, haha I loved that “sex talk” video!
Everyone should practice their ABC’s because once someone takes an animal into their home, they uphold the responsibility of that animal and his or her future. This also counts any extra little animals that may be produced during their lifetime. If a person is not willing or able to take responsibility of more animals, then they should have their pet spayed or neutered.

Didn’t anyone listen to what Bob Barker from The Price Is Right said? HELP CONTROL THE PET POPULATION! And how do we go about doing this? By adopting animals, not breeding or buying them. There are countless puppies and kittens waiting for a place to call home. Many of these poor creatures don’t get to even see life outside a cage. Let’s help save an animal’s life by adopting, not buying or breeding. Not only is it cheaper, but you’re doing that animal a huge favour. My grandma and I have always said that if we ever win a big sum of money, we would donate a bunch of it to the Toronto Humaine Society. Maybe we can’t save all those animals’ lives, but at least give them better conditions to survive in until they are rescued by a good owner.

If people don’t practice their ABCs, then there will be more baby animals and people won’t want those animal babies, so they’ll abandon them or give them to an animal shelter, and then animal shelters will become overcrowded and they’ll have to euthanise some of the animals.

Everyone should practice their ABC’s because breeding animals for your own personal reasons is not a good idea. If you want a companion animal the go to one of your local shelters and adopt an animal that needs a home. If you keep breeding animals, then that is that many more animals that will probably never get a home and be put down.

ABC is extremely important. I work in an animal hospital so every day I’m informing people of the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. It’s not only to prevent over-population and unwanted animals from filling up shelters, but also to prolong the life of the animal. All too often I’ve seen dogs and cats come into my work with terminal health issues that could have been advoided had they just been altered. Female dogs are at risk for developing mammary masses (breast cancer) and pyometra which is an infection of the uterus. Male dogs are at risk of developing prostate cancer if left unneutered. So just having a simple surgery done can improve your pets quality of life, and also give you more time to enjoy your pet’s company. And yes, puppies and kittens are extremely cute – but there are far too many that are left for dead in our shelters.
And always, always adopt. Shelter animals are the most grateful of animals I’ve ever seen.
People should practice their own ABCs because there is waaay too many people in this world and all we’re doing is destroying our natural resources. And with all the people here, we need to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. No glove, no love!

It’s my Birthday January 6th, I’ll be 20. I’d love a box that I could pass out at my Birthday party on campus. I’m getting rather bored with the stickers/leaflets/DVDs/LECTURING, and this is something that college kids are DEFINITELY going to like! Vegan condoms. What a blessing! I haven’t been able to find these anywhere in S/E Wisconsin! And the earlier you get students informed about adopting pets and spaying and neutering them the more likely this coming generation of Americans can fix the overpopulation problem. (Hello, does anyone here watch Animal Planet’s animal cops shows and watch all the hoarders??)
    Thanks!!

i am proud to say that all my animals were from animals shelters or rescued. i don’t think that people should breed there animals because it is sick and wrong. they make the animals breed and that is cruel. not only is it wrong that they do this, it is also selfish. most of the breeders are only looking for money, and this is wrong. they shouldn’t be able to sell away an animals life, that is sick an cruel. i am just really happy to say that i don’t support there sick cruelty. thanks to peta i have learned a lot about animals and the way they should be treated. but i suppose i already knew it. but i never acknowledged that it till they brought it to my attention. thank you very much for that. i love you guys and all the work you have done! along with everyone else. thank you guys!

Every one NEEDS to practice their ABC’s because we all know how depressing it is to see a starving cat or dog out on the street with no place to go. And we all know how many cats and dogs are abandoned at shelters. It’s part of our duty, our responsibility as a pet owner to take care of our pet and spaying or neutering them falls under that care.
All my cats are spayed and neutered, except for Lilly, she’ not old enough :)

This is an amazing way to spread the idea of adoption. My cat Simba, who I had since I was 2 and I’m not 18 was adopted and neutered. We got him my from aunts non profit organization Animal Lifeline. They are a great group of professional vets and others who have experience with animals who home mainly cats who don’t have loving parents. The unfortunate part is that some of these cats have FELV and whatnot which most people find a reason not to adopt, but they are so loving why wouldn’t anyone! Many spend over $500 on just buying a cat when you can easily adopt for not only cheaper but an even more loving animal and not to mention the idea of adoption and making someone’s day makes you feel like a million bucks every day! My cat is the greatest animal I’ve ever met and not to mention the most handsome and my best friend!

My cat was adopted from my aunts non profit organization, Animal Lifeline, based out of south Jersey. He is the greatest cat I’ve ever met and one of th oldest and fattest, had him since I was 2 and now I’m 18, you do the math. He’s a sweetheart and loves to cuddle. There are so many other cats that need to be adopted from my aunts foster cared cats, all in very nice homes, but no “real” homes and it is a shame to see people spend over $500 for a particular animal when you can have just as adorable and loving ones for cheaper and not to mention the idea of you saving, taking care of and loving an adopted pet fells amazing.

When will we learn that exterminating millions of animals is simply wrong because we won’t take measures to fix the animal population problem? We need to learn the ABCs and correct this atrocity. It’s simple as A-B-C!

    Love the video!!
I think it’s very important for everyone to know their ACB’s. My friend had her little kitten spade recently because I had told her about the possible out comes if she didn’t and one was that there would be lots of homeless kittens. But I know of a few people in the town of Nelsonvile Ohio that could use some of these Glyde condoms….Those people are over populating and so are their stray dogs and cats!!! It breaks my heart to see all of those stray dogs and cats…..=(
I always have arguments with them about animal rights and how animals have feelings and personalities just like people do.
    Anywho
    Love and support always,

Everyone, male or female, is responsible for making sure that they protect themselves, and their pets, including when it comes to birth control. There are so many homeless humans AND animals, and every one of us needs to feel loved. It is not right or fair for any living being to either be caged (orphanages, animal shelters) or sentenced to death (abortions, euthanization/gas chambers), simply because of carelessness. We need to take responsibilities for our own actions, and also look after our companions.

I have experienced the misery of homelessness at several points in my life and, although there is a certain sense of freedom to it, it is a dangerous and miserable lifestyle that is hard to rise out of. I invite you to my website: http://www.FreetheGods.com. There you will find pictures I have taken of homeless people. I always give them a dollar or two for the privilege of photographing them. Usually, I am surprised by their cheerfulness and sense of pride. Often, they will show themselves to have some kind of talent. There is a fine line between genius and insanity.

When animals aren’t spied and neutered it makes them more susceptible to infections and diseases, not to mention certain types of cancer. Those dogs then go through agony either receiving treatment for their conditions or struggling through them.
Not to mention all the animals that go unadapted and die or are killed. All because of dumb decisions humans make.

Everyone should practice their ABC’s because overpopulation is a huge problem not even only for pets but humans! There are tons of animals and children out there starving and willing to give you their love. Before you think about breeding your animals and having kids, think about adopting a loving pet or child. The world doesn’t need to be any more crowded than it already is. Someone is waiting out there for your love and support. Go make a difference and adopt!!

Until every one of the millions of homeless animals is adopted, it is irresponsible to breed more. By breeding your pets you take the possibility of a home away from an otherwise homeless and familyless animal who’s probably going to die.

i think that it is a verry good idea for folks to get their pets fixed because there are so many strays, and more strays means a lot of creatures that can spread deieses. folks should totaly adopt too because there are so many lovable animals out there taht need good homes. also, if you don’t have a lot of money, a fixed pet means there won’t be a population explosion and a higher monthly expense for you!

The use of condoms, well, birth control says it all!!!
Having a pet, in being an owner, it suggests you take care of your companion, that you care for them, love them and cherish them! Those who don’t, can’t be called owners!
The joy animals bring to a life is worth anything to have. So long life to animals.

ppl need to realize that simple steps can have a huge impact on so many lives. Animal Birth Control is the easiest way to save and protect many animals. The number of animals put to sleep, surprised me when i heard it, i couldn’t believe that it was so high. One simple step can prevent everything. Ppl must learn that an animal is a huge responsibility and u must think of everything before even getting one, even where u get the animal from. Shelters r the best place to get an animal. When u adopt an animal from a shelter u r saving its life. People need to spread the word of Animal Birth Control, we take the precautions to protect ourselves, why can’t we help those who can’t help themselves

It’s awful that so many animals remain unsterilized. I remember on three different occasions, stray kittens and their mom lived under my family’s porch. We fed them, and let them live in our basement until we could find homes for them. Unfortunately, everyone isn’t as loving to animals as my family is. Sterilize your pets!

I’ve seen firsthand how stray populations soar very quickly when they’re left uncontained. Illness and rampant disease are easily found. It saves more lives to spay and neuter since ferals are often euthanized.

It’ really important that people understand that having a pet also means that you have to take care of them, and it’s your responsability. There are too many people who are surprised when they find out that their animal is pregnant.People should get a wake up call, to remind them that they have a responsability towards their pet & their eventuel puppies. Also people should be better informed, like to never buy a pet from a pet store because they are always overpopulated and just for the profit but buy a pet from a well known breeder.take care of your own health but also your pets health !

It is very important to practice your ABC’s. I want to write this comment to persuade and alter peoples minds. Hopefully they get the idea that using ABC’s stops deaths. Every year thousands of pets like yours and mine die. Yes, that’s right lost cats, dogs, etc. Please spay and neuter your pets (practice your ABC’s). To stop these horrible pet deaths all we have to do is practice ABC’s.

People should practice their ABC’s- No, they NEED to practice their ABC’s because it’s ridiculous and shocking how many animals are left, abandoned, helpless and homeless because people just don’t care. It’s so simple, such an easy way to keep all those animals from being abandoned and more from joining them. The number would be astoundingly low if people would just practice their ABC’s.

At my old house, we had a garage with two floors. We’d never gone to the second floor before, having no reason to, until one day we just decided to see what was up there. Peering up there, what we saw was shocking… cats, cats, and more cats! They were everywhere! Because they had no guardians, they were all infested with fleas and ticks and completely sick. We had no idea that this was going on. They’d just kept breeding and breeding.
This meant problems both for the cats and for the humans who lived in the area. Having no veterinary care, they were all miserably ill. Having no place to live but a run-down garage, they were living in squalor. And because this was a town in which everybody lived close together, there was a danger that the neighborhood kids would wind up becoming ill as well. It had turned into a mess for which the only solution was animal control.
But it did not have to be that way! This whole situation could have been prevented so much easier had people taken it upon themselves to get their cats spayed and neutered to prevent this massive overpopulation of cats. Spaying and neutering is extremely important for all companion animals, including the ones people continue to breed irresponsibly. What happened in my hometown may have been an odd case, but it is still a representation of what happens throughout the country… a surplus of companion animals with no homes, while people continue to allow them to propagate more, or in some cases, make them do so. But there are more than enough dogs and cats. What we need is more compassion and responsibility.

Why shouldn’t people practice there ABC’s? I think (with that big number of cats and dogs) People should realize there is a companion out there that is perfect for them, they just need to find it. You can’t make companionship by breeding animals, its a connection you have with your pet. And if people realize that if they wanted more pets, they should adopt to give a needy animal a wonderful home. By breeding, your worsening the problem. If someone really cared about the animals in the world, they would save them from possibly getting killed in an overcrowded animal home, or do what I do (save animals from the streets). I don’t quite understand why some people can’t understand this topic, but thats why were here to educate them! :)
