GRAPHIC: The Lives of Some Cows in California

A few years ago while interning at Farm Sanctuary’s Animal Acres, my roommate and I decided to take a trip with the sanctuary’s manager to see the truth behind the dairy industry. Chino, California, was the destination.

When we arrived in Chino, the smell in the air was very strong. It was the smell of dairy farms.

We stopped at the first dairy farm that we saw. One of the workers allowed us to look around while he was milking a cow. Cows are no longer milked by hand but by machines, as you can see in one of the pics. The milking room was extremely dirty, cold, and hard. Cows are milked twice a day, and 30 to 50 percent suffer from a painful condition called “mastitis,” a painful inflammation of the mammary glands.

While checking out the area, we found two dead calves on the side of the road. This is not an uncommon sight at dairy farms. The dairy industry is so hungry for money that it often won’t allow calves to have their mother’s milk.

Calves are commonly taken away from their mothers within two days of their birth. Because of this, many calves suffer from poor nutrition and the emotional separation. These two newborn calves had been hog-tied with ropes and were covered with flies.

No animal deserves to be neglected, abused, and exploited. It may be too late for these babies, but lots of others need your help! Pledge to save babies by ditching dairy products, and educate yourself on the many delicious, cruelty-free nondairy options available.

Many of these poor babies are sent to auction within days/hours of birth and are bought by kill-buyers. There is a group that goes to buy them just to get them away from those kind of people. Even though they know there are extreme difficulties even getting them to feed, etc. they do their best to make them as comfortable as possible. Since almost no one wants them (especially the males) they are then humanely euthanized – all within a couple of days of birth – such a terrible waste of an innocent being. All so that the ‘beautiful people’ can tout the virtues of milk – they never saw the unwanted by-product or bothered to educate themselves before promoting it.

The cruelty that exists in our country is rampant and must be stopped! These people must lose their jobs since they cannot control their cruel instincts! Shameful and so very sad!

I wish more people knew about the horrible condtions cows endure on dairy farms but of course the Dairy Industry hides all the abuse behind closed doors. Instead, they air commercials of happy families drinking their milk.

Cows milk is for baby cows!!!

the poor babies that are taken from thier mothers when born. The calf is taken from mum (she is put straight in the milking shed as humans want her babies milk)the calf is thrown into a pen ready for collection- it cant even stand up its new born!! then a lorry comes around to collect them and they are thrown onto the lorry. The are driven for miles whilst collecting more from other places. Then they arrive at the final destination where they are unloaded shoved ‘wobbling on thier little legs’ to walk along a metal shoot where they are prodded up the backside with a stun prod then wobbling further they walk to their death – at the end of the shoot they drop into a huge mincer- (alive) This is the life of the ‘bobby calves’. The dairy industrys dirty secret. They call these poor darlings a ‘bi- product ‘ of the dairy industry.
This is outrageous, unacceptable, and must stop!!! you can read all about this on ‘care2′ web site and see the video footage showing exactly what I have just written- please visit the site and sign the petition and share if you care.

I agree, I sign lots of petitions on the Care 2 site and also bring it up on forums in the discussions on my University course about how animals are treat in factory farms etc. sometimes people don’t know of the horrors of this and the fur industry, I think that magazines should publish information on this for free rather than carrying any advertisement for the dairy/fashion industry. There are ots of alternatives soya, hemp or almond.

This is so sad and shame on humans for treating these babies this way. Jane Velez Mitchell should do a show on how barbaric it is drinking milk. It is not good for humans for drink milk anyway. I have a lactose intolerance. It should be kept for the babies. Can’t the HSUS or the USDA get them fined for this barbaric and torturous treatment of these poos babies that are left to rot in the sun?? The poor things. :(

This is evil. No animal needs to be treated that way. You will answer for your abuse someday as we are supposed to be taking care of what God has given us. We are responsible for their care not to abuse them. You should be ashamed and get real this looks like something that would go on a LONG TIME ago. Be kind as you wouldnt want to be treated that way.

This is all about permissive laws (or no law)! The low-lifes who perpetrate this kind of abuse to innocent, helpless cows, do it fearlessly and with relish! They are sick sadists whose employers pay no attention to what’s going on, and obviously, don’t care! All these “milk” farms who don’t pass stringent inspection, should be closed down forever! How can we make that happen? Contact your state representative and senators, and complain vigorously, and ask how to get a bill into legislation!

Absolutely ridiculous. There is no need for this type of treatment towards our co-inhabitants. When will people get it? Devastating.

I had no idea this was a consequence of milk production; this is inhumane and criminal.
I am going to change my dairy purchasing, I cannot be a part of this cruelty .

Those poor baby calves were probably hog-tied so they could toss them on the road alive to let them die a horrible death. There are no words to describe my hate for these kinds of people. They aren’t human
