How Can Eating Pizza Save Animals?

Vegan mozzarella sticks? Faux-meat buffalo wings? Vegan seitan parmesan roll?! Yes, yes, and yes! Jay, a peta2 Street Teamer from Long Island, New York, worked with his parents to have all these delish foods (and way, way more) added to the family’s Three Brothers Pizzeria.

Of course, peta2 is known for our food lovin’ ways, so we’ve awarded Jay a Compassionate Teen Award for helping to spread the word about a vegan diet on the island and winning people over where it matters the most—in the stomach, of course! We got with Jay to ask him a few questions. Check him out!

What made you go vegan?
It started when I was playing this online anti-McDonald’s game. The game involved raising cows and then turning them into hamburgers. I finally made the connection that meat comes from an animal. Then I found the “Meet Your Meat” video as well as other information. I was absolutely horrified at what happens to these innocent animals. I went vegetarian in June of 2007. During my four months of being vegetarian, I read more in depth about what happens to cows used for dairy and egg-laying chickens. As a vegetarian, I was eating organic eggs and dairy products, but I realized that it was still not enough. I realized that those chickens and cows would one day end up on a factory slaughter line. There was no need for me to continue eating these things when there are so many alternatives to dairy products, eggs, and meat. I went vegan in November of 2007. Going vegan introduced me to so many new foods. As a vegan, I started to cook for myself. I then decided that I wanted to become a vegan chef and change the world of vegan cooking! I’ve been vegan for two years, and it feels awesome!

Why do you think it’s important for places like your pizzeria to have vegan options?
It’s very important because this is the 21st century, and we now have the knowledge of so many alternatives that we don’t need to cook with animal ingredients anymore. I want to show people how amazing vegan food can be without harming a single animal! Restaurants should realize that the number of people eating a vegan diet is rising, and yet most restaurants still don’t have decent vegan options on their menus. There are vegans everywhere, and I want them to have the option to eat the same type of amazing food that they ate before they went vegan.

What kind of food does the pizzeria offer?
We offer a full vegan menu with vegan pizzas, calzones, heroes, appetizers, pasta, entrees, and desserts. We are one of the only restaurants that I know of that serves vegan mozzarella sticks. The mozzarella sticks are one of our bestsellers—people are crazy about them! We also have buffalo drumsticks, which are a hit too! We have calzones, which are out of this world. They are filled with cashew-tofu ricotta and Daiya cheese, and people usually get various toppings added to them. We really have a wide range of delicious vegan food that you can get!

What are your plans for the future?
I will be going to culinary school to further expand my cooking repertoire this fall. I plan to open a 100 percent vegan restaurant in New York City with the same concept we have now at Three Brothers Pizzeria sometime in the next two years or so.

Um, yeah—I can’t WAIT to visit New York and try out all these amazing foods at Three Brothers! You may not have your own family pizzeria to veganize, but I bet your school has a cafeteria, right? Get vegan options added in your school (with our help!) by clicking here, and if you’re ever in Rockville Centre, New York, be sure to hit up Three Brothers Pizzeria and meet Jay!

Stay loud!

I only eat vegan pizza because it is more satisfying. The ingredients on other pizzas are for carnivores. I recently watched “Food Inc.” and seen how cows, chickens, and pigs are farmed by big conglomerates that force the farmers to participate. It was disgusting. It is the newest movie out there concerning animal cruelty. If they have that much control over farmers and animals, then what’s to say we aren’t next?

This is such an awesome place and have been going since the summer. I was surprised how many new items were added when I went back a week ago. I see new things added a lot! This is the best vegan pizza place I’ve ever gone too also in terms of pizza. My significant other said it was the best pizza they ever had and they aren’t even vegan. The mozzarella sticks are absolutely amazing as well. It was the first time I had mozzarella sticks in two years since I’ve never seen vegan ones anywhere and have been searching for them. I go there whenever I can and highly recommend it. :D
