Hunting Dog Left for Dead in Ditch

While heading out to pick up and transport animals belonging to low-income residents for spay-and-neuter surgeries at one of PETA’s mobile clinics, a PETA Community Animal Project fieldworker spotted a truck driver attempting to drag something out of a ditch on the side of a busy highway. Our staffer pulled over to make sure that the “something” was not an animal, but to her horror, it was just that—a horribly injured hound dog who was soaking wet, shivering, covered with lacerations, and unable to stand or walk.

The tracking collar around the dog’s neck helped explain how he had wound up wandering along a highway: He had been used for hunting. Hunters rarely treat their dogs any better than the animals they take pleasure in killing. Countless hunting dogs are hit by cars when they cross highways while tracking prey or when they become lost during hunts. Dogs are frequently (and illegally) abandoned at the end of the season or when the dog “won’t hunt.” Many hounds spend most of their lives chained up or confined to pens in all weather extremes, and they are often trained with shock collars, which can cause burns and cardiac fibrillation and turn dogs into confused, fearful, nervous wrecks.

As for this poor, suffering hound, PETA’s fieldworker gently loaded him into her van and quickly rushed him to an animal shelter. The dog was taken to a veterinary clinic right away, where it was determined that he had suffered a broken back and that euthanasia was the most humane option for him.

Hunting hurts not only the animals targeted by this cruel blood sport but also the dogs hunters use as their unwitting pawns. Educate yourself and your family on why hunting is cruel.

This is so very sad and it sickens me how cruel these people are. Thank goodness PETA’s fieldworker found him and he didn’t have to suffer any longer.

This is just dispicable behaviour to a living and breathing animal. How distressing for the poor dog, hopefully someone will be a voice they have none, the pain and distress for the poor animal and frightening!

In my house, on my couch, at this very moment is one of these discarded hunting dogs. I adopted him from a rescue in North Carolina who saved him from being euthanized. After almost a year, he’s just starting to overcome some of the fear (mostly of men) that he has and Saturday was the first time he ever played with a toy. He’s been a lot of work but he’s such a sweetie.

This is so heartbreakingly sad. What is wrong with people. Too many half-wits out there that have no empathy for animals. Words fail me how people can do things like this to loving innocent animals. Jail the culprit.

I feel very, very sorry for this poor dog. He should not have died.

j’ai très mal en voyant ce pauvre chien dont le regard est si doux malgré sa blessure. je souhaite que celui qui a fait ça subisse la même chose pour comprendre le mal qu’il a fait.
I have very bad seeing that poor dog whose eyes are so sweet despite his injury.

my cousin who is a huge redneck has aound 9 hunting dogs, and keeps them in small pins until they ae tuned out to hunt, they always get a new dog when one dies, which where he lives, is on the road hit by cars, and that happens pob thee to four times a year or more, not to mention their other animals, like cats who get hit and die also. it sickens me, hes the kind to kill an animals fo just being in his yard, theres no changing his mind about how he feels about killing things. is soo horrible, I hate where I live bc ppl like that are everywhere!!!! poor dog, above…. idk how anyone could leave him….. 🙁 just maked me think about the poor hound hunting dogs he has pinned up in tiny pins……

People who say hunting = conservation are wrong. It actually wipes out whole species. Just look at Passenger pigeons, great auk, carolina parakeet (actually, the C.Ps were finally wiped out by the spread of the meat industry!)
