Injured Orca at SeaWorld!
SeaWorld has proved once again that enslaving whales and other marine mammals is dangerous and cruel! After hearing of a serious and horrific injury to an orca in a preventable attack, PETA has submitted a complaint asking the USDA to take disciplinary action against SeaWorld for housing orcas incompatibly in violation of the Animal Welfare Act.
Nakai, an 11-year-old male orca at SeaWorld in San Diego, sustained a wound so significant that, as a whistleblower said, “a dinner plate–sized chunk of his lower mandible [has been] sheared off, exposing underlying tissues and bone.” The flesh cut from his jaw “was big enough and intact enough for SeaWorld to retrieve it from the bottom of the pool.” Check out the shocking photos below!
According to the whistleblower’s report, Nakai’s injury was the result of “a major altercation” between Nakai and two other orcas, Keet and Ikaika. The Animal Welfare Act makes it clear that “marine mammals that are not compatible must not be housed in the same enclosure.” Yet SeaWorld continues to imprison incompatible orcas from very different groups together in the same enclosures—and the result has been stress, agitation, serious injury, and death!
Animals at SeaWorld need YOUR help! Never visit SeaWorld (or any other marine-mammal park) and urge your friends to do the same! Don’t forget to tell the company’s owners that you won’t support the abuse of Nakai and the other intelligent animals imprisoned by SeaWorld.
