Rescue cat Lily

Last year, instead of buying an animal from a pet store, I rescued Lily (who could resist that face?). Had I fallen for the pet store “kitty in the window” trick, she could’ve ended up just another number—one out of the nearly 4 million dogs and cats who are euthanized every year because there just aren’t enough homes.

Pet stores are relying on you—the animal lovers—to keep them in business. They shamelessly shuffle in cute puppies and kittens endlessly while millions are literally dying for a home in shelters across the country. Of course, they don’t want you to know that behind the scenes, animals are warehoused, neglected, abused and even killed for the cruel pet trade that brings them big bucks every year.

Do your part to end animal homelessness and put the pet trade out of business—pledge never to buy an animal (and always adopt!) now.

Stay loud!
-Rachel

Awww, Lily looks like my Bella! Bella was rescued off the streets; she was found by my friends abandoned in an alley. She was barely 3 weeks old! :( I fell in love w/ her but noticed she was lonely while I was at work, so I got her a little friend — Izzy. Izzy was adopted at 2 months from a shelter. I’ve had dogs too; one was given to us by a friend whose dog had pups and the other was adopted from a shelter. I cannot imagine EVER buying an animal from a breeder or pet store. Sure they look cute, but how could you buy when there are SOOOOOOOOO many equally as cute pups and kitties at shelters. When you buy from a breeder or a pet store, you’re pretty much killing an animal from the shelter. :'( That’s such a sad thought. I’ll NEVER buy a pet. They’re like my children, I’d never buy a child either.
Save a life. ALWAYS ADOPT! :D

I’ve adopted my last 2 dogs and since have volunteered at the shelter where I adopted them, and I’ve made the decision that for the rest of my life, I will always adopt every animal.

I have 6 cats and a dog. All adopted from shelters or rescued off the street. NEVER EVER BUY an animal while there are hundreds of thousands of them being killed every year in shelters across the country!

My friend has adopted all of her dogs except one who had to be put to sleep a few months ago from rib problems. It just goes to show you that not only is buying your pet from a store wrong, the pet you buy may have numerous health issues since pet store dogs are more often than not bought from puppy mills.

never say never ok well here is when you can never buy and animal from a pet store when you can buy an animal from a pound or animal shelter!!! always buy an animal there even though they are put there because there vicious bull poopy!! people buy those animals well if you won’t want it later then don’t get it because you’ll end up throwing it away in the end! let somebody else who will wnat to keep forever have it. because they won’t waste the poor little animal. and just letting animal sitting there on the side of the road how is it supposed to lve. it was never trained to live in the wild it was always fed it never had to do that on its own!! what if someone left you on the side of the road with no resources and taped your mouth and hands so you couldn’t speak cause animals can’t speak not tell me how that feels! my mom always says ” if you don’t like it then don’t do to other people!” and it’s true if you don’t want to be left outside then don’t do it someone else. before you do something to someone think would i like it if some did it to me? if the answer is no then don’t do it!!!

Petstores are for sure evil, but in England i never see cats and dogs there anymore =)
however i want a rodent, and i sure do NOT want to buy from a petshop, but even cat rescue shelters are so far away and hard to access, i cannot imagine were i would find a rescue place with rodents and other animals? :/ so i dont know what to do >Petstores are for sure evil, but in England i never see cats and dogs there anymore =)

I rescue my animals, but not all pet stores are in it for profit. Petsmart and petco for example only adopt out pets *dogs and cats*, they dont believe in buying puppies or kittens because of the increase of puppy mills and such. They also fund P.A.U.S.E, and create a donation process that funds other animal welfare groups like spaying and such. As much as I hate the animal trade of people who really do abuse it and buy from warehouse developments and puppy mills and abused animal suppliers, not every pet store are bad.
But for people like petland, and others who do do it, shame on you!
Their are so many pups and kittens that are in pounds, save a life today! :D

well here they don’t sell dogs or cats, only yorabbits, birds and fishes. to get a dog or cat you have to go to people who breed or shelters

I have to agree with Little_Lotte, What happens to those we don’t buy though? And my grandmother “breeds” Chihuahuas but they all are well taken care of that. Seeing to it personally, I raise, nurse, feed, medicate them all. And I re-home them to those I see fit to take them. So buying from a breeder is not all bad, the only reason why she even “breeds” them is because my mother rescued the mother breeder bitch from the streets. If it were not for that she would not even have over half of the pups she has now. We do ask every person who does take one from us to get what shots they don’t have and to please spay/neuter. So in all breeders are not all bad, isn’t our whole mission is to make sure animals are not abused and get a decent home to call their own? Wether we got them from a store or breeder the best is the pound?? Personally I have 4 Chihuahuas I raised from birth the first generation litter from the bitch my mother saved. And my mother has a poodle mix that was due to be put down due to a “parvo” scare. It was just hookworms but because a lack of time and effort a dog was going to be put down because the pound did not want to invest money on a dog that was going to die any way. So even pounds are not best case scenario, I am in no way saying one way is better than the other, just my point of view from my own personal experiences. Feel free to comment back, disagree, after all it is your own opinion any way. Like I said earlier our whole mission is to make sure animals are not abused and get a home of their own.

@marie, it’s making a statement that we have an abundance in animals, that are being poorly treated, and we should think about taking care of those, before we, ourselves, buy any more cats or breed them.
