The Chicago-based group Mercy for Animals has just released a shocking new undercover investigation, which documents male chicks being ground up alive in an egg industry hatchery. You see, because male chicks don’t lay eggs—which means lost profits for the corporations—the industry doesn’t consider them worth keeping alive.
Of course, I could describe this inexcusable cruelty until I’m blue in the face, but the video says it all:
Pretty horrific, right? It’s important to note that this is a routine practice for both regular AND commercial free-range, cage-free, and organic eggs. Think free-range means cruelty-free? Think again.
What do you think: If you wouldn’t grind up chicks alive—is it any more acceptable to pay other people to do it for you?

What are they supposed to do with the chicks? Rehabilitate them? The only reason people care about this is because chicks are ‘cute’ if it were cockroaches, no one would give a shit. People are so altruistic and kind, saving all the cute animals for themselves.

All I can say it that I want to vomit! I am physically sick after watching this video…. I am vegetarian and was considering strongly about being vegan this year. After watching this video I am not eating eggs again!!!
The poor little broken bodies that were scalded while still alive and lived thru it will be nightmares for a long time for me

You know, I understand that this is horrible and I’m not saying I condone it, but is it not possible that this is a bit loaded by PETA and everybody against it? I mean, there are so many things that could explain it.
1. By grinding males up, they might be giving them the quickest death possible, because it would be done in no time.
2. Maybe chicks do have nerve endings in their beaks, but they are newborns, and havent fully developed yet. Their brains are not fully grown, and therefore it stands to reason that their nerves would not be either.
3. Have these organizations done psychological research on the development of chickens? unless they have done extensive enough research to tell if a chicken is psychologically scarred by a moment an hour after birth, then I do not know that they can truly talk about it.
I am not supporting this, but I would call myself reasonable, and I know that PETA can get a bit emotional. The only way you can get a really accurate representation is if you remove that emotion, which is something PETA cannot do, because it runs on emotions. I am not against PETA, just against partial truths and ignorance.

I am sobbing right now. Those workers have completly disassociated themselves from the fact that those chicks are living, breathing things that can feel pain as much as they can. They were JUST brought into the world and then put through that? It’s appauling. Let the the workers infants go through that same process and see if they feel anything for those killed and maimed.

Whoever owns this factory, imagine yourself going through that machine being dump from 10 feet high and then getting your teeth cut off! Then finally, you are dumped into the grinder, but first you roll around a bit before getting grinded! Would you like that to happen to you? This video is horrific. We have 5 pet hens. They are very social and friendly animals. Ours live in a nice large area and are treated like pets that we love. During the day they get free run of our property. I am vegetarian, but do eat their eggs. I am curious what vegans think of that. I don’t see it as exploiting them since they are our pets and they are going to lay the eggs anyway.

I am so disheartened. Baby chicks are the most beautiful things alive. They bring such joy just to touch their furry bodies. I am disgusted with the people who own corporations who think only about profit. If male chicks aren’t of any use in their eyes, then why not donate these beautiful male chicks to organizations or people who are willing to take them in. Incredible, i am speechless. really makes me question everything. don’t know what the solution is. cruelty is inexcusable though. these workers are unconscious, desensitized, desperate, incapable of being in touch with their feelings. I once briefly worked in a chicken house in israel on a kubbitz , it was only for a few days but I could not eat or look at chicken for a year after. I guess that is what we need more of. Less disconnect with how the food gets to the supermarkets. The public must know where and how the food gets to them, that will be more than enough to get people thinking and feeling again.

I cried before i even finished reading the text. I still haven’t watched the video yet. All these years, I’ve been paying up to three dollars more per dozen eggs buying “cruelty free, free range, vegetarian fed” eggs, thinking, I was making a difference. After this article, I’ve vowed to find a replacement for eggs. I’m already a vegetarian for over thirty years, and within the last four, upscaled to vegan. Eggs is the last barrier. I’m not going to lie, I am not a vegan- nor am I a vegetarian. I tried once, though, for nearly a year. I have chrons disease, and although I love to eat healthy- if I eat nothing but fruits and veggies for any long period of time, I end up sicker than a dog. I was hospitalized 10 times in the 9 months that I gave up animal products. However, all of my food comes from a friend of my mother’s who lives in Sedro Wooley, Washington. He raises his own animals on all organic food, and has a very large vegetable farm. All the animals are happy, live FULL lives and yes- are eventually killed. But in a fast, and pain-free way. The chickens are not kept in pens, but roam freely, all the cows and pigs are in huge pastures. I do not feel guilty for eating this meat, I really don’t. I am physically unable to be a vegan- and all of you can try to say I’m making excuses for myself but I have DOCTOR ORDERS that state I need to eat lean meat inorder for my body to process food.

this is disgusting. I couldn’t watch past the “de-beaking” part. Humans pride themselves on their “kind and gentleness”….you’re not fooling anyone. Man this is sick! I have seen many cruel videos but this just goes one step further. I was scared to play the video knowing I would be fuming afterwards. I work next door to a KFC resturant and I feel like projecting this video onto the front of the building.

I couldn’t watch this video because I knew how bad it would be. I know we need to see this in order for people to truly understand what kind of cruelty is out there. I really believe we will be judged by what we do to all of god’s creations. I saw another of your videos last year about innocent animal being skinned for their fur when some of them are still alive. I thought I was going to die and I will never forget the animals eyes when he looked into the camera. This image will always stay with me….I reemember it whenever I think of eating meat!!

“Please remember these chicks when you sit down to your next meal” I agree that this is totally inhumane and all, but what i saw in the video im not simply going to sit down to eat and remember them while i go to eat. I’m not a vegetarian/vegan but this video wont convert me, but i now am firmly against these types of animal cruelties. I never knew that some these industries could do such sick heartless things to newborn animals, also to the workers, do they not have feelings? I understand how some people would be appalled by this. however to the people asking how some humans could bear to work these farms, you have to think of the circumstances these people are under. these people have families to support and thia is especially more difficult so long as the recession decreases. I’m not condoning the killings of these baby chicks. but I know what side I would pick if my family needs the money and that a big egg corporation is willing to pay me to do this.of course there are options, but many people do not have the same liberties that we do. ( perhaps instead of complaining and crying in on our butts in front of our computer screens we can think of different methods to deal with these unwanted chicks. they are not profitable and need to be sent else where.) until someone figures this out, I’m afraid that these chicks will continue to be wrongfully put to their deaths.

I became a Vegan to loose weight and for my health first. I then learned about all this animal rights stuff and animal cruelty videos after trying to reachout to meet other Vegans. Of course it was horrifying!
But.
In order to eat meat, an animal has to die.
Meateaters no matter how dumb they may act know this fact and will keep on eating meat after viewing these videos.
Lets promote how HEALTHY a Vegan diet can be to one’s life also..
Meateaters may be becoming desensitized by all these kinds of shock videos! It seems its only the Vegans who are shocked.

there will always be someone or some country that’ll eat meat so not eating it won’t save all the poor animals.

omg this is so unbelievebly off the charts cruel. I am thinking if they were little kittens, or puppies even meat eaters would be outraged and it would be stopped. So what is the difference. Do they think the little chickies don’t feel pain? And that it’s ok to be cruel to chickens because they are going to be food and not pets? And the people working there, how can they sleep at night?

Seeing this, how can I respect people who eat meat. Now when i hear that “oh i only eat free-range eggs they’re better.” I’m just going to vomit. man I’ve been vegan for two years now and I just never thought due to an interest in ignorance I suppose, that the organic and free range market practices would, or could even be, this horrific and despicable never again will I bend the rules of my house to accommodate meat eating friends never again.
People who eat meat are careless and hateful not indoctrinated because my entire high school saw these videos and only 6 people became vegetarian claiming eggs cheese and milk were part of a healthy diet that they didn’t want to give up, even after I told them it was incorrect to think that they still didn’t care because “my family eats too much meat” I personally come from a family who the father of which prides himself in his “bad ass” meat whether it be smoked or BBQ’ed, because i live in Texas it’s apparently harder to be vegan, BULLSHIT! quit lying to make yourself feel better you know it’s murder and you know it’s wrong.
