News Flash: Hermit Crabs Don't Belong Inside!

Let’s talk about an animal who deserves more attention: the hermit crab. All of us know someone who has had a hermit crab, and all of the stories are similar—like my story, for example: My little brother had a hermit crab when he was eight years old. No one paid attention to the hermit crab, he didn’t even have a name—he was considered a decoration—and he was placed solely in the care of an eight year old child. Needless to say, the hermit crab died—and no one noticed for days. Talk about a life of suffering and neglect. Tragically, this happens all the time.

When allowed to grow up in their natural habitat, hermit crabs live in colonies of 100 or more—and they only live in warm parts of the world. Hermit crabs will only lay their eggs in the ocean and will not reproduce in captivity—so that means that every crab in every tourist shop and pet store was ripped away from his or her home and family. Yep, that’s right:

Hermit crabs are gathered in the wild.

That is not only CRAZY, but perfectly legal. Many of these animals suffer injuries and death from improper care at stores, from handling and transport, and from neglect by tourists who purchase them on impulse and quickly lose interest in them. Hermit crabs also suffer when disinterested owners release them into non-native habitats.

What does this all mean?

DO NOT buy hermit crabs—and if you already have one, DO NOT release him or her into the wild.

I used to have four hermit crabs when I was nine (my brother had two, but he got bored) that I took home after a school science experiment (we were supposed to send them back so they could go to another school, but my teacher thought that was cruel, so she reported that they had just died, it wasn’t that uncommon). I named them, built them a giant terrarium after researching how they lived in the wild, and they lived nice, long lives (well…for hermit crabs…) and then I buried them with tiny tombstones (rocks with names and dates-of-death in permanent marker).

I also rescued the 26 African Dwarf Frogs we had, and they had their own personal giant aquarium. With the exception of one (he/she jumped to his/her death when we were transferring them) there were no fatalities, and they lived for a good while.

Hermit crabs can come out of their shells anyway. They don’t have their own shell to start with, they move into abandoned ones. As they grow bigger they move into a bigger shell.

My litttle sister’s friend has THREE hermit crabs!!! They have names and they pay attention to them but it still isn’t enough. When they got them I told them that they would probobly die. They didn’t care. When one of them died, they bought another one. THAT MADE ME SO UPSET!!! The problem is, that family gets easily offended so I can’t even educate them about it. 🙁 Poor little hermit crabs. 🙁

Aww, poor hermit crabs. 🙁 I had two and we used to play with them in the sand box when we were little and my bro (okay, and maybe me too) left them unattended so they ran away. 🙁 Never again will I have a hermit crab!
