Being an Olympic athlete takes years of training, a lifetime of dedication, big dreams, and an even bigger heart. As these athletes go for the gold in London, we’ll be rooting along at home, knowing that they have a heart of gold for animals:
Candace Parker
WNBA superstar Candace Parker is known for slam dunks on the court and smiling big off it. When she’s not leading the U.S. women’s basketball team to victory, you can count on her to be hanging at home with her dogs, Nino and Fendi. Fendi even posed with Candace in her peta2 public service announcement against the fur industry:
Elizabeth Armitstead
Vegetarian Elizabeth Armitstead was powered by tofu when she took home a silver medal in cycling for her U.K. team. Go, Lizzie, go!
Michael Phelps
Michael Phelps is known worldwide as the most decorated athlete in Olympic history. In addition to the gold medals lining his walls, he can add one more top honor: proud guardian of a rescued dog.
Dylan Wykes
Every time Canadian Dylan Wykes crosses the finish line, you can rest assured that no animals were harmed in the making of this vegetarian marathon runner!
Tony Azevedo
U.S. men’s water polo captain Tony Azevedo showed true Olympic spirit by opening his heart to rescued cat Snow after she had been thrown into the ocean and left for dead.
Carmelita Jeter
American track and field star Carmelita Jeter sprinted to the finish line of kitty enthusiasts everywhere (myself included!) when we learned of her five rescued cats. If you ask me, that’s deserving of a gold medal right meow.
