Speaking of KFC, I would love it if one of you would come up with a T-Shirt design like this one from Threadless.
I think everyone should take a tour of a battery shed at least once in their life so they can see firsthand what egg-laying hens go through each and every day. In these modern-day concentration camps, hens are shoved in filthy cages stacked tier upon tier, half of them looking like they’re dead or close to it; I don’t see how anyone could see such extreme cruelty and not be moved to action. I will never look at an omelette the same way again after walking through one of Florida’s largest egg-producers’ sheds. I nearly vomit just thinking of the smell of rotting flesh and feces. For those of you who think things are better outside of the United States, think again. Recent news coming out of Ontario details the “nightmarish situation” for hens there:
Some live birds were in the manure pit, and others were found dead in cages or in the aisles. About 20,000 hens, each with less space than a sheet of typing paper, were packed five to a wire cage, and the cages stacked on top of one another.
In my opinion, egg-laying hens are the most abused animals on the planet. The next time you’re in line at the grocery store, don’t just stand by silently when you see someone buying a carton of eggs. Speak up, because if you don’t, who will?
