North Carolina Street Teamer Ashlee Ball accomplished every Street Teamer’s dream (well, one of them): She got her school to add vegan options to the cafeteria menu!

Ashlee’s classmates are now able to grub on soy cheese manicotti, soy grilled cheese, and salad! My high school had almost nothing that I could eat—I would have been in soy cheese heaven (the best kind of heaven, I’m sure) with those selections.

Not only is the peta2 staff totally feelin’ Ashlee’s dedication, we’re giving her an award for speaking up for cows who suffer in the dairy industry!

Check out what Ashlee had to say about her experience below.

Tell us about your journey to get vegan options added to the menu at your school.

I remember going up to get food and not being able to eat because they had no food for vegetarians or vegans—I was hungry too! I talked to the principal but that seemed to do nothing, so I went on peta2 and looked at what I could do. I made a petition and asked all of my veggie friends for help. Each of us took a sheet and got as many people as we could to sign! I wrote a letter to the principal explaining (politely!) what I expected and that I hoped that something could be done. The very next day she called me to the office and we talked it over!

Were your friends supportive?

All of my friends were supportive—it wasn’t hard to talk to them.

Do you have any advice for other students who want to get vegan options in their school?

My advice is stand up for your rights (in a civil way), and always know that vegetarianism and veganism matters.

What is your favorite peta2 campaign?

My favorite campaign would probably have to be the McCruelty one, because I think people should know where their food comes from! It’s not fair for chickens to go through that!

What animal rights issue are you going to take on next?

The next thing I plan to do is campaign about why people shouldn’t wear fur.

I know what you’re all thinking—”How can I get soy cheese in my cafeteria?” Ask for it! Print out our petitions, get your classmates to sign them, and take them to your principal. If your school says “no” to soy cheese, I bet you that a veggie burger of sorts could be negotiated. Bing, bang, boom.

Knowledge is power!

Way to go! How rad would it be to veganize all cafeterias in all schools across the planet…a very big goal, indeed, but soooo worth it. Mad love, Cindy

Heh, that’s cool. I did that as well. Nothing like vegan rib sammiches in high school.
