October is “Cut Out Dissection” Month, and I’ve got some awesome news to celebrate: California’s Newport-Mesa Unified School District has confirmed to PETA that it’s replacing cruel cat dissections in district schools with modern virtual-dissection software! 😀 This awesome victory follows a PETA plea and offer to provide the district with non-animal learning methods. Now students will get to learn more effectively and without chopping up dead animals in the classroom.

The district made the decision to eliminate cat dissection after disturbing photos of Newport Harbor High Schools students playing, posing, and smiling with the mutilated bodies of cats used in a biology class surfaced on Facebook. :( The photos were brought to the attention of PETA and the faculty by brave and compassionate students from the school’s animal rights club, Compassion in Action.

Cats who are used for dissection come from supply houses, which obtain the bodies of lost, stray, and abandoned animals from animal shelters. This means that some cats used for dissection may be someone’s best friend!
