T-Shirt Tuesday Giveaway: Cut Class, Not Frogs

Profile photo of peta2

Posted August 2, 2011 by peta2 staff

Last week we learned a whole bunch of interesting facts about frogs (like they shed their skin and eat it—zoiks!). Aside from them being unusually quirky and cute, they are sentient beings just like the rest of us and deserve to live out their lives as they please.

Every year, millions of frogs, rats, cats, mice, and other animals suffer and are killed for dissection even though there are plenty of cruelty-free alternatives. It’s not only cruel, but it’s bad for the environment, and it wrongly sends students the message that these animals are simply classroom tools.

Flaunt your froggie pride, and let the world know that you are not down with dissection, by sporting our popular “Cut Class, Not Frogs” tee:

For your chance to win this “Cut Class, Not Frogs” tee, comment below and tell us about some of the ways you’re going to speak up for animals used in classrooms this school year. Entries must be received by August 9, 2011. A winner will be chosen at random and notified on August 11, 2011.

Just so you know, by commenting here, you’re acknowledging that you’ve read and agreed to our privacy policy.

We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals… In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth. The indifference, callousness and contempt that so many people exhibit toward animals is evil first because it results in great suffering in animals, and second because it results in an incalculably great impoverishment of the human spirit.

I would never dissect. That’s just horrible. If I were ever required to, I wouldn’t do it, and try to make it up by some other assignment, and talk about the cruelty of it, and explain my decisions, and also, their a website called froguts.com. It’s like a virtual dissection/biology thing, that you can use in place of an actual dissection assignment. Teacher’s should be able to accept this in place of a real dissection. Plus, i would hate to do that to a frog, because growing up, I’ve had many different kinds of pets, including little frogs.

I am starting a new school this year, and I am taking Chem, but next year I have to take biology. At my old school, I know they dissect in that class. At my new school, I will refuse to cut open any creature that was living at any point, and my reasoning is because those frogs had to be taken from nature at some time. You can’t just make frogs appear. They probably lived shitty lives too.

I’m in middle school, and last year we had to disect frogs and all i did was cry and ran out of the class room. This year, after deciding to be a vegetarian, I’ve learned there’s soo much more I could’ve done and will do. I’ll go to my sciene teacher this year and discuss with her all the alternatives and how cruel it is to use an animal this way. After that I will try to get my friends along with me to start a movement within my school to discuss this and show videos and articles on the subject to every sciene teacher. We can make t-shirts, entry’s in our school newspaper, posters for the school, and anything else we can think of. Hopefully we will end it in out school, then our school district, and even further.<3

I also am going to try to get my forensics teacher to give the entire class a different assignment rather than dissect a pregnant rat. If she doesn’t, I’ll just do a different one myself. (:

Even though I’m not taking any science classes this year, I remember being in Bio a few years ago and telling my teacher how uncomfortable I was with cutting a pig, a frog and even a little grasshoper. This year, I’ll make sure I tell all of my friends how cruel it is to dissect animals and how they should speak up for animals (especially because I know they wouldn’t like it if they were an animal that had to be dissected). Then I’ll wear this shirt the first day my friends have to dissect in Bio and I’ll stop by and give my old teacher a smile and say “I told you so.”

There are other alternatives that refrain from exploiting animals or the environment for our aesthetics!

Last year , I had a biology class that required us to dissect A LOT. I never did it though. I basically told my teacher and the whole class that it’s against my beliefs. I said the animals we were supposed to dissect never volunteered to die and they didn’t donate their bodies to us. I actually got many other students in my class and the biology class next door to agree with me. The teachers were not pleased and continued to treat me rudely after that, but I didn’t have to dissect and I still passed my class 😀

I’ll tell my science teacher that animals desirve to live they’re lives like people and if we dissect anything this year I’ll do what if done since sixth grade and refuse to tear and rip apart a poor inasint cretchers body just to see the inside when we could just look at diagrams and do a online dissection with an animated animal that way it’ll be less gory and I would actualy consider dissecting an animated fake non living animal:). I’ve decided to boycott biology as a testament to my disagreements with the treatment of animals in the classroom. At my school, it’s not frogs that are dissected, but fetal pigs. These animals didn’t even have chance the see the sun just once before being “donated” to science classes every where. This school year, I plan on requesting the formation of a vegetarian/vegan club in order to raise awareness regarding these issues. We’d pass out flyers and leaflets and our own stories on animal cruelty and how easily it can be prevented.

I will try to do what I do every year. Educate under classmen about how its unnecessary, cruel, and horrible for our environment. Most times no one will listen, and even if they do, they dont have to guts to refuse to dissect. I almost had my school won over on getting educational dissecton computer programs, and told them how much money they would save in the long run, and how many animals lives they would be sparing. But as usual, they blew it off.

    Me and my friend who’s a veg totally plan to cut out dissection this year. How? Well, our school is notorious for not changing. They are so backwards, stuck in the middle ages where religion is rampant, women are oppressed, and animals are tortured. So it’s not like I expect it to work, but I’ll do anything it takes. I want that shirt so much but I don’t have enough street team points yet…so might as well get it free! :} I don’t have any PETA merchandise yet…SO unlucky… :{

A year ago in my biology class, we were told we had to cut up a pigs heart and a lambs liver. I refused to do this and was told that if I didn’t, I’d not only fail that subject, but I’d have to do extra time in detention all month. Instead of accepting what the teacher said and getting on with the dissecting, I refused to participate, walked out of the classroom and began a petition to stop the classes of cutting up poor, innocent animals body parts. I also stood my ground, and boycotted it all. I got nearly every student in the school to refuse to do the dissecting. In the end, our school chose to take action, and now they bring in synthetic animal organs, which is better than the real thing. Although I still don’t like the idea of cutting up an animal, at least it’s a fake version, and we’re still learning!

I’m homeschooled, so therefore I’m taking online labs and doing everything virtually, but we also have a homeschool co-op in my area that does a ridiculous amount of dissections. I’ve made sure to single handedly inform EVERYONE of the grotesque nature of dissecting, and the various other options.

Last year in school, will let’s just say I didn’t know any better. I would always say that my teacher made us dissect any poor animal she can get her hands on. From fish to frogs even worms, crabs, and pigs. And every time I just sat there and watch, I would feel so guilty, I didn’t know some thing could have been done. But that was back then, now this year I plan to stand up and say NO. I also plan on informing as many students as I can and to join me in the No to Dissecting movement. I figured the more students say no, the lest likely she’ll fail us all. And if she does at lest it was for a good caues, bonus I don’t feel guilty. 🙂

I’m a student at university and my first year we had to dissect a frog, rat among other sea creatures and such. This was my first year doing dissection. At the end of each lab we had to do a dissection of some kind, I didn’t do any of them. I left the lab early each week. We weren’t marked on them but 75% of our lab final was based on those dissections. I managed to pass but not by much.
It’s too bad I already done that class, I would definitely wear this shirt to my labs.

I’m not sure if my school dissects animals or not… I know there is this program that is an elective (I think) where the class adopts an animal and we raise it and find it a home. Like last year they adopted a momma goat and helped her give birth and found a nice farm for them. I’m not sure what kind of farm but yeah 🙂 and I know one year they adopted bunnies. I would love to own this shirt because its cute and it has a statement on it, and everyone would know where I stand in the fight against dissecting animals for educational purposes 🙂

In school we dissect frogs and rats. 🙁 I am totally against this not only because I’m a veg but also because anyone can tell its wrong. To stop this I went to my principal, she said it was out of her hands and it wasn’t up to her, I asked her if she could help me get a hold of my school board. She helped me talk to the school board but they had their minds set so I went around my school and got 341 signatures against dissection, the school board was about to give in. I organized a sit in with 30 people outside the principals office, I got suspended for 2 days. When I got back their was 4 days till’ the dissection. I wrote a letter to my school board explain other ways we could be taught just more humane, it was the day before the dissection and a news letter was sent home, it looked just like my letter, the dissection was cancled we are now virtual.

In my school they disect a multitude of things, from brains to eyeballs and lungs. And im not quite sure what else. In my fifth grade year, we had to disect a frog. I begged my dad for hours to let me skip class but he did not give in. So I got together some of my friends and we bought a couple plastic frog figures that shows everything inside that a real frog does. so we ended up using them instead and my teacher actually thanked me for it.

We had to dissect frogs in class last year.
    I, of course protested.
Last year is actually when i became familiar with Peta2’s website.
When i found out that we would need to be cutting open these adorable little froggies, i remembered that there were these stickers that said “Cut Class, Not Frogs”
I completely fell in love with that saying. I went around for the two weeks before dissection, giving out stickers and writing “CUT CLASS NOT FROGS” on every white board in the science classes, that i knew we also doing the dissection.
I eventually brought to the attention to the teachers that there was an online alternative to dissection, that would teach us the same things are actually doing it.
In the end, i got in a small amount of trouble for causing such a commotion over something the teachers thought was a small things for their students to do.
Not matter how much trouble i got in, i felt good, because i knew i saved at least one frog from an early death and for that i will always be happy with my efforts to save animals.

    Dissection sucks.

Not only are frogs, pigs and sheep dissected at my school. So are their fetuses . I think that dissection is cruel and unfair. At school when its time to dissect again I wont participate and i will try to get everyone else to stop participating. Last year I put up anti-dissection posters and make T-shirts for everyone who support the anti-dissection cause. I even painted a mural showing the sadness in a frogs eyes fight before evil man dissects him. I plan to do this and more this year at school again. Stop Dissection!

Well, at my highschool we have to dissect and FETAL PIG. yeah, a pig that hasn’t been able to experience IT’S OWN LIFE! I absolutely REFUSE (with a capital R) to do it. I’m going to do a choice policy on dissection because I myself think dissection is morally wrong. I plan to give leaflets to my class and all to rests to educate them on how wrong dissection is. Oh, and of course, STICKERS!! and I’m going to pass out cut out dissection stiff at my sisters college (Anna Lopez and Amelia Jensen knows :-D). I honestly cannot wait to stomp out dissection at my school! This is going to be soooo great!! <3 the shirt size is XL. Thank you! I'm going to see if we could do an online activity instead of actually dissecting. It's gonna go so awesome!!!!

I really need this shirt. In about a week I will be starting a new grade, thankfully :). I will be taking life-science. We are supposed to dissect a worm, a beetle, a frog, a pig, and some animal’s brain. I will refuse to dissect, and try my very hardest to get each and everyone of the students at my school to skip out on dissection, even if they aren’t in my grade. This is inhumane and cruel. When I found out about this it was at orientation. The life-science teacher was talking about how much fun it was to look through a catalog of dead animals and I was so disgusted I walked out of science orientation. Exodus 20:13 Thou shalt not kill

(i do not support the high kill shelters in any way) but I guess its better than breeding bunnies and frogs for the sole purpose of cutting them open while still half alive. I am sent a letter, via facebook, to the secondary science advisor in my hometown regarding dissection and it’s hypocritical approach to conservation, a class I actually took from him when I was a student. He then added me as a friend on FB, and has been in contact with me regarding this issue. I sent him the link to http://www.teachkind.com, a link I found on PETA’s page, and there are hopeful talks going on now in the school district to replace animal dissection with more animal/earth friendly options. 🙂
Thank you for your resources, PETA! You ARE doing justice for animals and kindness.

My high school has options for virtual dissection, or even just charting things out on a picture of a frog with the help of a text book. Students have made a small protest against the use of dissection and because of it, the cutting up of frogs, rats, mice, and even baby pigs are no longer in our school. Just goes to show that more people care about animals and that care brought our school together as a hole.

I’m taking AP Biology 2 this year, and if dissection is involved, I will most definitely refuse to.

I’m going to refuse to dissect, and try to get my friends to do the same. Also, I’ll try to convince my teacher to use online or plastic models instead. If I win this, I’ll be sure to wear it around my classmates and teachers, and if I don’t I will still have my other Peta accessories to help! :3 Size: Extra small or small

I am taking biology, and I’m pretty sure my school will try and make me dissect. So, I’m going to hand out petitions and flyers on dissection and am gonna make sure no animals will be harmed in the name of “science”.

Well if we do have to disect then, I will tell everyone in the school of what I think about it.

Well because now I am in high school I get the pleasure of taking biology. Its not that I don’t like science, its just my friend told me we have to dissect some sort of animal. She told me the dissection was so much fun, but I’m not doing that. If I won this shirt, I would wear it to that class during the weeks we might have to dissect something. I am also going to refuse to do the dissection and also convince some of my other vegetarian friends to help me protest the live dissection. Since all the new computer software is out there, there is no reason to use actual living animals, and I’m not afraid to tell an adult how I feel about live dissection.

Oh if I get the opportunity to win this shirt, it would need a size large. Thank you!
