The Atlanta City Council will decide TODAY (at any minute!) whether the use of bullhooks—rods with a sharp metal hook and point on the end that are used to strike, jab, hook, prod, and beat elephants on the most sensitive parts of their bodies—will be legal within Atlanta.
The councilmembers have made it clear that being contacted by the public would be the most influential factor in persuading them to ban bullhooks. I am writing to urge you to vote today to ban the cruel use of bullhooks on elephants. Bullhooks are rods with a sharp metal hook and point on the end that are used to strike, jab, hook, prod, and beat elephants on the most sensitive parts of their bodies. These weapons have been abandoned by most zoos, including Zoo Atlanta, and have no place in a progressive city like Atlanta. Fulton County made international news last year when it became the largest local government to ban bullhooks, and now the world is watching to see whether Atlanta will keep this forward-thinking and compassionate ban in place within city limits or cave to pressure from corporate interests that make millions off elephant abuse. Please take a stand today and vote to ban bullhooks in Atlanta—making any other choice would mean condoning animal abuse.

Please end the use of cruel bullhooks. They are unnecessary and brutal tools causing suffering. Thank you.
