Victory: Nike Suspends Vick Contract

Following PETA protests outside Niketown stores and countless calls and emails to the company asking that they cut ties with Michael Vick in light of horrific allegations of his involvement with dogfighting rings, Nike has released the following statement:

“Nike has suspended Michael Vick’s contract without pay, and will not sell any more Michael Vick product at Nike-owned retail at this time.”

As a result, we have called off our planned protests outside Nike stores around the country. Thanks to everyone who wrote to the company about this issue or attended the demonstrations, and thanks to Nike for doing the right thing by ending its association with someone accused of torture.

Reebok has also made the decision to stop sales of Michael Vick apparel, stating:

“While we respect the legal process we find the allegations against Mr. Vick too disturbing to ignore, therefore, we have decided to immediately suspend selling Vick NFL product, both at retail and online through the Reebok website.”

This is great news for anyone who is concerned about cruelty to animals, and we hope that it sends a strong message to the NFL that they need to do the same thing and suspend Michael Vick immediately, pending the outcome of this case. To send a message to the NFL asking them to get on with that, please click here.

I am so happy Nike took charge and droped Vick. Justice will soon be served. Now if NFL can soon see what he did was wrong then they can follow in Nike’s steps. Animal abuse is a serious crime and we all need to speak up and fight for what we believe in!

And all that are like him as I am sure there are too many like him. Wish this planet was segregated with the animals ONLY with the decent people because of the horrific things animals are made to do.

While I am happy that he got the “boot”, I think he does deserve his day in court. It’s the American way. He will get all he deserves if found guilty. In the meantime, I hope all the other people out there who engage in this barbaric practice, feel his pain, and cease and desist. I feel for all those poor animals who had to go through this terrible sport and maybe now laws will be changed to protect this breed and any other breed from being tortured. In my book, I will not watch another NFL game or purchase any products until there is justice done.

Fighting dogs is like chicken Fights, it’s not legal and is cruel he should be fined for dissapointing the fans, and fired for what he has done, this is worse than if he sold drugs.

I wish that all those poor dogs that were use for fighting would have the chance to defend themsel but now is my turn to talk in their behalf. I am from Dominican Republic and we do not have this problem that we have in America. The Justice of men and the Justice of God take care of these criminals.

I am so pleased to hear that Nike droped Vick, now it’s the NFL’s turn. He should never be allowed to play football ever agian, and put in jail for the rest of his life. What they should really do is get all the dogs that were involved this dogfight and have them unleashed on his pathetic ass!!! He needs to pay for the enexcusable crime.

While I find this new completely revolting I would just like to comment that there is a serious lack of information on how michael vick is or was related to this crime. This modern-day ‘yellow journalism’ is disgusting as well. Vick should at least be given the respect as a human being and this sensationalism is itself animal cruelty on the human kind.

I’m beyond horror-struck with Michael Vick along with the entire NFL. Clinton Portis, who made it absolute clear on national television that “dogfighing” is OK and how he, himself along with his ignorant entourage supports Vicious Vick and his underground business filled with blood, guts, and sorrow! I don’t care how much money is on the line… NOTHING can bring back all the innocent lives taken by this evil vicious criminal along with his callous followers! I hate the NFL.. after hearing this.. I will never buy a single solitary ticket! I’m appalled in the manner that the NFL is responding to this! Completely relaxed and unremorseful, just like evil Vicious Vick, who has no sympathy or remorse behind his barbaric nature… which has caused so much grief and pain in not only children who look up to him, but to all the poor innocent animals that are defenseless. As long as I can breathe, read, and write…I will continue to proactively bring awareness to the public all over in regard to the NFL’s unremorseful, relaxed, “conduct policyâ€? along with the evil, ignorant, corrupt, athletes that they inhabit!
I truly cannot express how deeply depress I’ am behind this. Michael Vick has no idea how much raw-pain he’s caused America. What a let down! What a total loser he is! I hate him.. I really do… every time I see his face, I get enraged, upset, disgusted! I want justice to prevail in the name of all the abused defenseless dogs Grisly Vick tortured! Please, in the name of God, do what’s right and sack him off the team. I would rather watch a new, civil quarterback take the field VS watching a COLD BLOODED MURDERER! Please show the world, our children, that this is not tolerated and most of all NOT COOL! IF you just sit back and STAND by him…. He’ll just strike AGAIN! PLEASE, AGAIN, IN ALL desperation, I ASK THAT YOU TAKE THE RIGHT approach TO tackling this massacre, indeed!

I am so glad that Nike, and Reebock have come
to their senses. What a great victory it is to
have 2 major companies turn their backs on Vick.
I personally think that M.V. is “guilty as sin”!
To that end, I hope he is brought to justice.

I am very pleased with all of the companies that have quit selling any of Michael Vick’s stuff. Right befor this story broke I rescued a bulldog puppy from our local animal shelter that was to be used for fighting. He was rescued when he was 4 months old & when they found him he was kept in a pen NO LARGER than a MICROWAVE!! He was sick, in his own feces & starving. The authorities believe that if no one would have taken the time to report this, then he would have been one of the unfortunate ones and been killed either by fighting or what ever means them deemed necessary.
I was finally able to bring him home in June, nearly 3 months after he was place with the animal shelter. We really need to work on getting the judicial system to move faster in these cases so these animals don’t have to be brought up behind bars! My newest family member (Buster) is doing very well, he loves everyone including children. He still has some trust issues, but he is getting better. With lots of love & patience he will be a wonderful addition to my family (me).
Keep up the great work that you do for animals every where.

    hi.
i’m glad “we have victory” and all.
    for the dogfighting and everything.
    and vick is getting indicted.
even nike has suspended his line of stuff…
i don’t understand why we should try and ruin his life and send letters to the nfl. what does that fix? he has a family he needs to support…

I think that it’s wonderful that Nike suspended his contract. It’s horrible that any person would do that to innocent animals and I’m grateful that other people see this and actually acknowledge that making animals fight is cruel and unusual. More power to Nike for setting and example to all the other sickos out there that believe that this is okay!

I cannot believe any human being could commit such a crime…..I think an ‘eye for an eye” Throw Vic in the rink…I wonder how well he would perform in such an unfair contest?

While I agree with Nike’s actions, I can’t get behind the sentiment that he should be barred from football. Michael Vick has not yet been convicted of any crime, and I feel anyone accused of any crime, no matter how heinous, deserves a day in court. A number of other individuals were also indited along with Vick, one of whom has agreed to a plea deal with federal authorities. Nike has every right to cancel Vick’s contract, as mere allegations will diminish his ability to represent Nike products in a positive light, but to have him lose his job before the outcome of the trial is wrong. Justice for all Victims should not mean Mob Justice.
