What made you decide to go vegan?
I first went vegetarian when I was 10 years old and equated hamburgers to my favorite animal, cows. I was in elementary school and didn’t know much about what to eat or how to cook, so I only lasted a year. I revisited the idea when I was 14, then became vegan a few months later after learning about where our food comes from and all the gross hidden animal ingredients, and never looked back!
How’d you get into baking?
I always baked basic cookies growing up, like chocolate chip and sugar cookies, then got into baking from cookbooks once I was able to use the oven on my own. Art has always been a part of my life and I see little differentiation between art and baking. I started experimenting more and writing my own recipes upon going vegan.
Why a cookie cookbook?
Everyone loves cookies, of course! Cookies have always been my favorite baked good to make and with a clear focus, it really forced me to be creative with inventing over 140 recipes of one kind of dessert. There are endless possibilities when it comes to baking cookies.
Do you have any advice to young people who want to go vegan, but aren’t sure where to start?
Of course! Get your hands on some cookbooks, start reading food blogs (even start one of your own!), research vegan nutrition to form a basic knowledge, and join an online vegan forum like The Post Punk Kitchen. Locally, you should find and attend vegan events, check if there are any vegan meetup groups, start a bake sale, or volunteer at a co-op or animal rescue. It’s all about creating community and connections, and letting your ethics drive your actions.
