What happens when you meld together progressive and experimental rock sounds that ignite incendiary visions of blasting into space? You get the newest addition to the Equal Vision Records family, ORBS. The band is an epic collaboration of a few bands you may have heard of, including Dan Briggs (Between The Buried and Me), Adam Fisher and Goose Holyoak (Fear Before), Chuck Johnson (Torch Runner), and Ashley Ellyllon (Abigail Williams/Cradle of Filth).
Check out our Q&A with ORBS guitarist Dan Briggs, and then enter our contest to win a copy of ORBS’ debut release, Asleep Next To Science.
1. How many members of the band are vegan and/or vegetarian, how long have you been veg, and what are some of your favorite veggie foods?
Our bassist, Chuck, and I are vegan, and Adam and Goose are vegetarian. I’ve been vegan for 11 years now, since I was 14. I love way too much food, avocados are one of my absolute favorites though-they’re high in B vitamins, omega-3s and packed with more protein than milk!
2. Of all of the major animal rights issues (animal testing, factory farming, animals used in entertainment, dog fighting, etc.) are there any issues that are particularly close to your heart?
When I was younger and first trying to understand all of the injustices that happen to animals I had the toughest time with animal testing. I remember going to meetings when I was in the 8th grade for the local animal rights coalition and seeing truly horrible videos that really fueled my rage.
3. Have there been any bands, artists, or books that have influenced your views on animal rights?
My interest in animal rights stemmed from growing up in the hardcore scene and reading zines and lyrics that promoted compassion for animals. Earth Crisis was one of the bands that got me really excited to get active and really further educate myself on animal rights issues and veganism in general.
4. Does anyone in the band have any animal companions? If so what are their names and were they adopted or rescues?
Adam has a pup named Coda that he adopted, and I’m pretty sure Ashley has a unicorn hanging out in her backyard.
5. What does ORBS have coming up that we can look forward to?
Our debut record Asleep Next To Science comes out on August 17th and then we embark on a full U.S. tour with Junius on August 19th.
Unicorns and puppies and compassion for animals, oh my! I’m really digging on these guys. If you could blast off into space and could only take 2 CDs, what would they be? Let us know in the comments below, and you may be one of 3 lucky winners to receive a copy of Asleep Next To Science. Comments must be received by August 17 and three winners will be chosen at random and notified on August 20.
Good Luck!

The 2 CDs that I would take into space are:
Between the Buried and Me – Colors
Korn – Untouchables
These are both very special albums to me, that have helped me and they are good when I’m lonely, which I probably would be in space. Colors is a great musical masterpiece for any mood.

I can’t take my iPod!? Well, those two albums would definitely be Kisou by Dir en grey and TANATOS by 9GOATS BLACK OUT. They’re my favorite albums by two of my favorite bands of all time. Yes, they were both released within the last year. I honestly don’t care for music that was made before at least the 90s, haha. Those albums are both at least an hour long, have beautiful packaging (yes, I actually own hard copies of ‘em!), and are so unique with various styles mixed in that they’d be sure to take care of my musical needs while I’m up in space. =]

Gotta be Lame and say, BTBAM’s “The Great Misdirect” lol. It’s so well thought out and put together; never a dual moment on that album…
And Cynic’s “Traced in Air”. Some of the same reasons, but mainly cause its beautifully written, and in a space atmosphere, its only right to be listing to “The Space for This”

First off this is a terrible situation…why can’t i just bring my ipod? haha…anyway:
The Great Misdirect by Between the Buried and Me: another brilliant work from Dan, and in my opinion, BTBAM’s best album.
Awake by Dream Theater: One of DT’s best, but I like it especially for the great bass playing and drumming as well as the dark themes and lyrics.

Between the Buried and Me – The Great Misdirect
Everytime you listen to it you discover something different hidden within the beauty and brutality of this album.
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band – Trout Mask Replica
Once I am finished with the first record I can listen to this to help me finish off losing my mind in the depths of space.

Hmm. Only two CDs? They would have to be Between The Buried And Me ‘The Great Misdirect’ and Rise Against ‘The Sufferer And The Witness’
The Great Misdirect because it has such powerful songwriting that i can listen to for years
The Sufferer And The Witness because it has such powerful messages, and i’m going to need all the power i can get in space.

If i could bring 2 cd’s to space with me, one of them would definitely be Colors by Between the Buried and Me, and the other would be Octavarium by Dream Theater. These albums are both concept albums that take time to fully understand, and once that has been done, they are timeless.

I’d have to take two cds that are completely across the spectrum from one another.
The first one I’d take is Janis Joplin’s Greatest Hits, because I gotta have my Janis! She’s my hero, sorta kinda.
The second CD I’d take would be Alesana’s On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax because Alesana is one of my favorite bands and that is definitely their best album.(:
