My mom is one of those people who is obsessed with bacon. She makes bacon pretty much every day and I get sick just from smelling it. I asked her to try making a vegetarian substitute for bacon, but she said “most fake bacon is a type of food that’s synthetic, and it is more unhealthy for me than just eating normal bacon”. I was wondering if there is something that I could tell her to make instead of bacon that won’t make me sick and that she won’t complain about it being bad for her or not being as good as bacon.

Tempeh bacon is my favourite substitute. If you’re concerned about what store’s will stock substitutes the only thing you can do is search them as and ask workers where the vegetarian /vegan section is so you can look to see if they do have any. That or you buy some online. I’m not American so I can’t tell you what stores will have substitutes; best I can do is recommend you do that really.

Like Styna said, you could always opt for frying vegetables instead. Peppers, tomatoes and spinach are pretty good combinations for a fry up though it’s pretty easy to go through 1 bag of spinach as it cooks down alot.

Perhaps you could talk her into trying some homemade Eggplant Bacon?
This is the recipe I usually use, and it’s delicious (and healthy)!

    Hey @sarrie!

That’s SO gross, the smell of bacon makes me super sick too. Here’s the deal: there are DEFINITELY vegan alternatives to pig flesh that taste like bacon, but are WAY better for you, andddd no cute, intelligent, social little pigs have to be slaughtered for your mom to enjoy it!

My fave bacon alternative is tempeh bacon. It’s so tasty, and not as processed as some types of veggie bacon. Try out the Tofurky brand: http://www.tofurky.com/tempehproducts/marinated_strips.html :)

Try sharing this blog with your mom to help her see why you’re choosing cruelty-free bacon from now on: http://www.peta2.com/blog/bacon-sucks/, or this one’s a gem too: http://www.peta2.com/blog/15-reasons-not-to-eat-bacon/.

    Good luck!

      Thanks for the response,
What are some stores that have that though? I know that my mom probably won’t feel like going out of her way to go to any different stores to get that. She usually shops at Wegmans, but I get her to go to places like Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods sometimes. Would any of those places have that? I did get her to buy a different kind of bacon alternative from Wegmans once, but she never even tried it because what she told me about it being unhealthy. I’m sure that Whole Foods would have more kinds for her to try, but she prefers not to go there because it’s farther away. She also says that real bacon is less expensive
Sorry if I didn’t mention before, but she’s just very stubborn about it so it’s pretty much impossible for me to change her mind. She did watch a couple of movies probably 4 or 5 years ago about how animals bred to be eaten are treated and things like that, but she still tries to just ignore that I guess.
