Think abgiut it this way – if someone says to you “my cousin likes….” or “my friend…” whatever, would you call them it? Presumably you’d say they or guess at he or she until you’re corrected. Try that 🙂
I tend to either assume gender “he/she” based from appearance, as I would with humans, or I simply ask! 🙂
You can also refer to them as “they” in certain situations when you’re uncertain. Instead of “it”, try something like.. “this little kitty”, and so on. Sometimes saying plainly “he or she” is necessary until the gender is determined.
