As a coming home gift when I get back from my deployment, my sister got me my first ever Cairn Terrier. I never owned a small dog before and usually all of our dogs are big working class gruff barn mutts. I live in Upstate NY and it gets EXTREMLEY cold outside during the winter but I don’t want to keep Toto cooped up during the house all winter but from what my famiyl tells me, he’s outside for like 3 minutes and he’s shivering he’s so cold but he likes playing outdoors and I have a huge yard so there’s plenty of room for him to play on a run (granted now he can’t even more the leash but we live right next ot a main highway and he’s too young to know ‘don’t go into the road’)
I was thinking of buying him a little sweater type thing JUST for when he goes outside but I heard that a lot of dogs don’t like it and it makes them itch and it’s uncomfortable for them but I don’t want him to be like shivering and freezing whenever he’s outside. Plus I read that they like catching small rodents so I was gonna take him to our barn and let him run around to try to catch the rats and what have you but again, there’s no heat in the barn and I don’t want him to get cold.
So my question is; is clothing uncomfortable to the point Toto would probablly pick the cold over the cothes? I’m not talking like costume and accesseries and dressing him up liek a doll or whatnot; I’m talking like a basic sweater to keep him warm then take it off when he gets inside. He’s only like 2 and a half months old so he’s still a really little guy and I don’t want him cold when he goes outside to play or when he has to go to the bathroom.
    Thanks :-)

Get some booties too because the streets are cold. Imagine walking barefooted when it’s cold. That’s how they feel shoes are a good idea in the summer too because the concrete can get hot.

I have a chiuahuah and she has to wear clothes when she’s outside during the winter…as well as booties so de icing salts don’t get inbetween the pads of her feet. It’s not inhumane at all…

I would be careful about the taking him to the barn to catch rodents thing (even if he is just chasing them), I have a couple of pet rats and I know that wild ones (or even a scared pet rat) can cause some damage because they do have very sharp nails and teeth, I’m sure they could carry diseases like any other wild animals too, so especially while your dog is a lil guy I’d be worried about him getting hurt.

I’ve been finding lots of quality dog sweaters on sale in my local pet shop, I only use mine when walking my dog when it’s really cold out, she gets excited when I put it on her because she knows she’s going for a walk, so I wouldn’t say she minds it :) I definitely think she prefers it to being cold!

my mom’s Beagle/Rat Terrier mix used to get really cold really quickly as well. She had a wardrobe of sweaters equivalent to that of a small child lol. She would actually bring one of her sweaters to us when she got too cold, she loved them. She did hate them for about a week at first, but once she realized they kept her warm it was fine.
All the other dogs we’ve had haven’t had a problem with getting cold, but I just adopted a Rottweiler a couple weeks ago (first experience -ever- with this breed) and she seems to get cold really quickly too, so I’m going to make her a couple coats. I already put one of my winter hats on her when she goes out, and she loves it.

Just check how your dog acts when you put the sweater on him. There are many different styles, and he may be more comfortable with one than the other. Since you’ll be starting him out with sweaters when he’s young, it probably wont be as difficult as if you were working with a 3 year old beagle lol.

I’d suggest checking your local big pet store to have a look at some and pick out one or two, take them home and try them. If he doesn’t like them just return them and try again but it is something in theory would get used to. If your shoes are tight you get used to that and forget about it at some point right? It should be similar in dogs as well.

You can get specialised dog clothing for keeping them warm in winter.

Yeah it should be fine. We put sweaters on my mini dachshund(otherwise she shivers too). Even if it is itchy or bothersome at first, your dog will probably get used to it. Just like if you were to wear a sweater that is a little bothersome, you’ll get used to it and it won’t bother you anymore. The only thing that bothers my dog is sometimes her arms get stuck inside(because her legs are so short) if she lays down or something.
