• Could I still be considered vegan if I eat my own chickens eggs?

I cook a lot and one of the main ingredients are eggs, sometimes I use handmade substitutes but I also use my own chickens eggs. I never use store bought because I know of the abuse, yet I do have my own chickens. They lay a ton of eggs and knowing they are not fertile I suspect it is okay to eat them and still call myself vegan. I’m not particularly sure so I would love some advice! Thanks <3

No. Part of veganism is not using anything from an animal because it is not ours to take. Sorry :/ but you can be vegetarian. Also, you can totally bake without eggs. Here’s peta’s baking cheat sheet.

“I would never have a hen around just so that I could eat her eggs.
I can imagine a situation in which I might be caring for a rescued hen who needed a home, or a wild hen who decided to hang out on my property.
If those hens were to leave unfertilized eggs laying around, there would be no harm in eating them.
It would be disgusting and unhealthy but not morally wrong.”

No. Animals are not ours to use for product and profit.
Vegans don’t eat eggs not because there’s a chance they’re fertile, but because animals are not property. You can feed the eggs back to the chickens – the egg-laying process usurps essential nutrients, and it’s much healthier for them than it is for you. One egg contains more cholesterol than a serving of steak, and new studies show that eggs could be as bad for you as smoking cigarettes.

You’re not vegan, but you are cruelty-free.

I would say no, don’t call yourself a vegan because it would confuse people. And many people are already confused about what vegans do and don’t eat.

No, but yes at the same time? Haha. :) If I were you, when I was out and about I would tell people at restaurants you were vegan and anyone who probably will never see you again. However, if you’re talking to someone who you’re actually going to be seeing again and you have time to explain it to, then you can’t just say ‘I’m a vegan.’ In this case, you’d have to say you’re a cruelty-free vegetarian who only eats eggs from her own chickens. It’s way more complicated, but that’s what you should do unless you’re ordering at a restaurant and say ‘hey, i’m vegan, do you have any vegan options?’ or if you’re at a store and looking for vegan clothes, cosmetics, etc.

So I think what it boils down to is that you are a vegan consumer, meaning you won’t support cruelty, but you’re not a dietary vegan because you do eat eggs. Does that make any sense at all?

Um, way serious dark gray area there. You could say you live a vegetarian, cruelty-free lifestyle, I suppose, and just explain where you are coming from on that, but it is not veganism unless you give up all animal products.

I know what vegan means and I know a chicken is an animal….Thanks for the details >.<
I was just wondering if it was okay since there wasn't abuse involved…
Yet, thanks for answering my question I guess I should have asked it differently for an answer that wasn't for two year olds.

    NO.
Vegan means you don’t consume/use ANY animal products or anything from animals. Are chicken eggs from an animal? Yes. So is it vegan? NO.
You can eat it and be vegetarian, but you’re NOT vegan.
