• "Don't Lecture Me"

Im pretty sure we all get this, or at least most of us. Never in my life have I been able to talk to my parents about them going vegetarian with out getting “I get it, your a vegetarian. You don’t have to lecture me every time I eat meat.” What’s my favourite response? “Why” Just ask why you cant talk to them about meat, and they get all frustrated and stuff, ‘cuz no one can come up with a good response! “Because I don’t like it” “I don’t like it when you eat meat in front of me” “It annoys me” “It annoys me when I see you supporting the slaughter industry” Believe me, it works.

@VeganCaramel thats a really good point…a human taking an inanimate object is considered morally wrong, but killing and torchering an animal is right? huh.

Vegan Caramel, I’m quoting my friend. However if you look up the definition of self righteous it defines the term as:
Smug moral superiority derived from a sense that one’s beliefs, actions, or affiliations are of greater virtue than those of the average person and a holier than thou attitude.
And veganism can be likened to religion, it is a belief and a lifestyle, and many of those who follow faith believe that what they believe is fact also and have facts to back up their faith and think that they are educating, helping and saving others by trying to get others to convert to their faith.

I think any argument is best looked at from both sides of the fence. I can seriously understand why people get annoyed with Vegans being pushy and preachy, the same as I get annoyed with omnivores being unable to understand why it’s cruel to kill and eat animals.

I think both sides are rather stubborn.

As to where I’m from, I live near Birmingham, in the midlands in England ;) And, I don’t know why my friends and family don’t criticize, I guess they just don’t because I dunno, life’s too short lol.

Agreed! My sister is always like “No need to get preachy.” whenever I bring something veg*n up for discussion. If she says how cute a farm animal is I say “See, how could you eat that?!” and she just rolls her eyes.

MysteryMalice>> I don’t know where you’re from but I’m constantly criticized by omnivores for not eating animal products. I get lectured ALL the time! Most are understanding, it’s often the older folk who are like “But you need the protein! It’s a different kind of protein then what you get from beans, or vegetables!” Err…no.

MysteryMalice, a vegan who doesn’t care that everyone else is supporting animal cruelty sounds pretty heartless! Who would do that?

Veganism is nothing like a religion. It is based on fact. We have hours upon hours of undercover footage. Is it “self righteous” to ask someone not to rape? Or not to steal? Then why is it self righteous to ask them not to kill?

I think the case is with the majority of those I know is that omnivores don’t lecture veggies, and that for most people dietary choice is just that, choice. Just as people don’t like religion being shoved down their throats, they don’t like dietary choice. My one friend made a good point saying, he doesn’t mind anyone being vegetarian or vegan, he just hates the self righteous ones who feel they need to tell everyone about their lifestyle choice and try and make everyone else change. :/

HAHAHAHA! That’s pretty funny. I’ve found it’s better to do that when parents are wanting to go through a drive-through at McDonald’s or something. Usually, they’ll pass the restaurant. I guess it’s because they haven’t purchased the meat beforehand that makes them more willing to not eat it.

If I was a meat eater, I’d probably get pretty ticked if someone tried to make me censor my diet in front of them – so I’m not sure that’s the right way to go about it. I find that if you talk to people casually with reason and don’t just automatically go to defense, they’re a lot more willing to listen. Try bringing up the subject while your parents are not eating. If they have a meal in front of them, though and you are trying to speak to them about it then and only then – you could totally close them off from the idea completely. Just some thoughts. ^.^

This happens to me so often, though I do get people who actually want to listen. It’s so nice and uplifting when you come across those people who actually ask you the questions about why you became vegetarian, what’s wrong with eating meat, etc. and will actually listen and care when you respond.

I totally agree! It stinks too. Love the response, thanks! :) People hate it if you oppose their beliefs–even if you’re speaking the truth and they need to hear it. :/

Ya. ppl dont want to hear you talk if you have some thing to say that opposes their ideas. Especially in the region I live in people will consider you a freak and that is how they raise their children.

Ughh this is sooo frustrating! I don’t know if it’s like this for anyone else but I find that a meat-eater can go on and on about how “you need to eat meat” and all of these pro-meat ideas, but once a vegetarian/vegan says anything about not eating it, we’re immediately “lecturing” them.
Soo unfair. Some people just can’t handle the truth, I guess.
