Yesterday it happened. A UK live export disaster at the port of Ramsgate, Kent. It has been long anticipated, but no one could have predicted the scale of brutal incompetence and neglect that yesterday led to a welfare catastrophe.
Today Thanet District Council have suspended exports from the port. As Ramsgate was the only British port still being used to ship live farm animals for slaughter, this could be the end of live exports from the UK. We must push Defra to support Thanet’s brave decision. We must make this temporary change permanent, and we must ensure the trade isn’t allowed to simply relocate.
