So recently I stopped eating eggs because its cruel to chickens and all but I just thought about something. Free range hens are allowed to roam freely and aren’t abused so are they cruel? It’s unhealthy anyway so I’m won’t start eating them again. Don’t worry!

@emlefluff I’ve never been to any of these “free range” farms, so I can’t be 100 percent sure, but I’ve heard that a lot of the supposed “free range” farms aren’t free range at all. In Karen Dawn’s book Thanking the Monkey she explains this very well- she has a section that talks about squashing the free range myth. According to a CNN reporter, the USDA says that farmers who are “free range” have to let the birds outdoors, but “access can be through one small door into a crowded coop…the industry admits that most free-range chickens don’t stretch their legs.” These chickens are also bred to have overlarge chests, which is painful and a burden on the birds.
So to answer your question, I think that free range eggs are cruel, unless they are truly gathered from some utopia farmland where all the chickens live in peace (which would be wonderful, but sadly does not sound like what’s going on right now).
Sorry it was sorta long, hope this helps! 🙂
P.S I think its great that you gave up eggs! Good for you, and the animals <3
