• Having a well balanced vegan diet on a VERY low budget?

    Hi everyone <3

okay so I've been really really wanting to go vegan for the past 6 months and really just don't see how I can do it. I have been a vegetarian for 3 years and can drop all of the eggs, cheese, dairy etc in a heart beat, so that's not the problem. I'm really just on such a tight budget living with my family and being in high school on a minimum wage job. I'm really trying to save my money for a car and for the future, I'm not looking to spend a lot of money (or any) on vegan food. My mom does still buy food for me since I'm still a minor, but I feel like if I switched to vegan I wouldn't be able to have a well balanced vegan diet with how much money we have. What are some cheap ways to be vegan and have a HEALTHY, well balanced vegan diet?

Sorry, I forgot to add calcium (wish there was an edit button).
Calcium CarbonateAmount per day: 1g … Cost per day: 0.008

The bottle costs less than a penny per day and lasts for 453 days.
It’s a powder that I put in my mouth before I go to bed to help my teeth but it has become my primary source of calcium. The vitamins that I listed below each contain an additional 20mg of calcium.

This is my current base diet.
Most days this is all I eat because I try to put all of my money towards helping animals (usually cat spaying & neutering), but because the cost is so low I can afford to buy other things to eat if I really want to.

Soy ProteinAmount per day: 50g … Cost per day: 0.80
VitaminsAmount per day: 4 … Cost per day: 0.22
Fortified white rice … Amount per day: 0.5 lb … Cost per day: 0.40
Flavoring for rice … Cost per day: ~0.10

    Total daily cost: $1.52

    Notes:
    1. Shipping cost for the protein & vitamins brings the total up a bit, but the site has a flat shipping rate of $5.95, so, if you order several months worth of supplies at once, it will add very little to your total daily cost. Tax on the order will be a bigger issue of you’re required to pay it, but even that won’t raise your daily cost very much.
    2. I but my rice and flavoring from a local budget grocery store.
    3. 50g of protein is a number that was established with influence form the meat & dairy industry. Most people will do just fine with half that, or even less.
    4. I listed the maximum amounts that I consume. My usual amounts are lower and my actual daily cost is closer to $1.00
    5. My health is excellent.

@caitlyncv, Vegan food can actually be pretty cheap! Check out this blog for more info: http://bit.ly/NKLym8. You should check out our College Cookbook, too. It’s full of super cheap recipes that can all be made in the microwave: http://bit.ly/OKmLVR. E-mail us at peta2@peta2.com if you need any help getting started!

Thank you so much everyone for the great help and i will start trying to look for some bulk containers of nuts at my local warehouse store so i can maybe get a better deal, i totally didnt even think that popcorn wasn’t vegan, but duh of course the butter! & i actually think that popping my own would be even cheaper, right? Tofu is fairly cheap here and yes cheaper than meat which is one of the reasons i was able to switch vegetarian. Hopefully i can just get some good breakfast recipes with that to substitute the eggs (although i would like to eat the tofu everyday like i do eggs for my protein, i know that it wouldnt be as cheap as just eating eggs, but i think i can just switch it up with beans or just get a good protein supplement) and I will check out earthbalance and talk everything over with my mom (: thank you so much everyone! Feel free to add more vegan tips and ideas for me and other people looking to make the switch!

Where I live you can get tofu for $1.99 so it would be a good substitute for the egg if you wanted a tofu scramble. Throwing some spinach (or any dark green) into your wrap will help you get some extra iron and it is high in protein and replace the cheese for hummus (high in fat but the nutrients out weigh it). There is vegan yogurt (using coconut milk) made by so delicious but it is more expensive, there is also rice and soy yogurt but they also tend to be more expensive. I would suggest switching your yogurt for some apple sauce. I know co-op sells a brand of vegan microwave popcorn (do not know what kind of popcorn you use, obviously you can also just pop it yourself). Cambell’s tomato soup is vegan for another cheap easy to find option (though I would suggest homemade). Maybe try throwing some beans onto your salad for some extra protein. Peanut/almond butter is a great way to get some extra fats (also high in protein), also when you cook with any seed oils, nuts and seeds in general, tofu contains some fat (if you find this concerning i will add that eggs are also high is fat), and apparently olives (yuck!). Hope this helps!

You can get fairly cheap vegan yogurt from health foods stores- it sometimes even costs less than regular yogurt! Beans and rice ca be bought pretty cheaply, and you definitely don’t need to buy specialty egg substitutes! (I can never find them where I live, anyway) Also, silentscreams was referring to bulk nuts, not small containers, I’m not sure how much of a difference that makes. I’m not sure how much tofu you eat, but it is cheaper than meat, to say the least. You can get butter substitutes, like earthbalance (it seems expensive, but it lasts FOREVER, so worth it.) falafels are good, easy to make, and filled with protein. lot’s of international foods are less dependent on non-vegan ingredients, also, unless you eat a lot of leafy green vegetables, you will probably need an iron supplement. (also, B12 is hard to get as a vegan, and having a deficiency is very bad.)

Wow thank you that is actually very inexpensive for the size of those containers. I just can’t believe i’ve never heard of these protein supplements before. Thank youu!

Thank you so much for the reply that was helpful and let me tell you a little bit about my diet now, every morning i like to get my protein from two egg whites, i have two slices of bread with that or a toasted wrap, and then a side of steamed vegetables to go along with that, i understand that i can just not have the egg and its vegan but where’s my protein without buying special vegan food like egg substitute or protein links to throw in there? In between meals i’ll have a bowl of cereal, i like to put water with my cereal (go ahead call me weird, at least its not milk hehe), or some fruit with lowfat yogurt (substitute?) and for lunch a wrap with veggies and lots of cheese so i can get some fats, i would love to have nuts as a substitute for fat but maybe its where i live? (south fl) i have neverrr found nuts to be cheap or any type of cantainer that is worth the price $8 to $14 on one container is crazy, i do like to put beans in my wraps for protein as well, more snacks are popcorn and other cereals (i feel like i eat a lot of carbs) and for dinner i have vegetarian soup with parm cheese and a salad with a hard boiled egg white and avocado. I just dont know where i would get a lot of my protein from. I know i can get a lot of my fats from cheese and avocado, but we only have avocado some rare occasions and i make great use of it, but help me out please. I do get protein links and other vegan products when theyre on sale, but thats only when they’re on sale :\

The question with this is always what do you regularly eat? You can buy soy milk here at the dollarama for $1.00 so it is a cheap alternative for cereals (a lot tend to be vegan). A lot of toast and bagels (breads) are vegan. For sandwiches, tomato and cucumber are cheap options. You can use hummus as a type of mayo bc it is easy to find though veganaise is between 4-7 dollars and would last a while if it was just you using it. Hummus is also a great cracker did, high in protein, and also taste good on pasta (can get lots of types of pasta for $1 at the dollarama and is generally pretty cheap). Becel sells vegan margarine in a round container and you can usually find it at any Walmart. Cooking you vegetables in soup broth (really cheap if you use bullion cubes) is a health alternative to butter. Salads are great because lettuce is cheap and there are a lot of vegan dressings. Bulk bin nuts are quite cheap and high in protein (peanuts around 0.69- 0.99 per 100 oz.). Primo lentil soup is vegan and sells at $1.99 at Walmart for a fairly large can. Fruit and veggies are always really cheap and often in the reduced section they have some ripe items that are perfect but extra cheap for a quick sale. If you want to tell me what you tend to eat on a regular basis I would be glad to give you ideas how to make it vegan for cheap :) !
