Hello. My name is Shannon, and I care.
Sometimes it’s easy to be conscientious. Sites like Peta2 help me find information that I need, whether it’s to avoid animal tested products, or if it’s to connect with other vegetarians. I am an avid proponent of LGBTQ rights, as a bisexual girl. Projects such as It Gets Better help me feel less alone, even when I can’t see any others like myself.
However, sometimes it’s difficult. I live in a small town where everything form my religious beliefs to my sexual orientation to my dietary habits are causes of controversy. I often am the target of both verbal and physical bullying, even from my own family, as my father works at a meat processing plant and has been less than supportive of my dietary choices. Nonetheless, I continue on. I would never abandon my principles due to outside pressure.
I would just like to say that I care. I know how difficult it can be to stay true to your principles, be they human rights or animal rights related, and if you ever need to talk to somebody about it, I’m here, and I expect that there are others here who would love to talk to you, as well. That is all.
Well hey Shannon,
Great to hear you are trying to be conscientious and remember if everything was easy everyone would do it. Agree with VeganCaramel’s comment, so look up about factory farming concerning the dairy and egg industry if you haven’t already. If you are being made a target by bullies remember to choose your battles and when you feel you are at your strongest stand up yourself. Nobody should be bullied regardless of their beliefs. I did not find it clear if you are getting physical ill treatment at home, (sorry if this is not the case) but if you are maybe you should look to live elsewhere.
