On my way home tonight I accidentally hit a raccoon. I was driving down the road and another car was heading toward me, so I turned my bright lights (high beams) off. The other car did not, so I got blinded. By the time the car went by and I turned my bright lights (high beams) back on it was too late. I never had time to stop. I feel so bad about it. I’ve been crying since the accident. My cat got hit by a car about a month ago and this accident brought up those emotions again. I feel like the scum of the earth right now. :'(
Accidents happen. You did the right thing by checking on the raccoon and moving it off the road. I’m so sorry to hear that you lost your cat that way as well. Try not to dwell on it too much, it wasn’t intentional.
Glad they could help you with it! I’ve had something similar happen to me, too. Just know that it was an accident and the fact that you feel guilty at all shows that you’re a caring person and didn’t mean for it to happen.
@sara-w Thank you for sending the CID my way. Everything has been sorted out. Thank you for taking such great concern in the welfare of the raccoon. With this post I was looking for help dealing with my guilt. Thanks.
Yes, I turned around to check on him and he had already passed away. I made sure he was off the roadway and everything. I just feel so terrible. The whole thing was an accident. @sara-w what exactly would contacting the investigation department do?
This is so sad! Did you stop your car to check on the raccoon? Sometimes they get hit by cars and are left to languish in pain for days after. Please contact our Cruelty Investigations Department about this right away this to see if they can help at 757-622-7382, option 2, or you can e-mail them at CIDInfo@peta.org.
