I am a vegan. my cousin is a vegan. everyone else in my family is a vegetarian. I brought up the idea, to my parents, to build a playhouse, earthship biotecture style, in my backyard. my mother loves the idea, but wants it to double as a chicken coop. my sister wants to have a pet hen. when I brought up the whole egg thing, she said, “we’ll donate them to the women’s shelter, then”. I still would feel like a hypocrite producing eggs, even in a cruelty free way. what do you guys think?
I agree…if you’re keeping them as companion animals there’s no reason to let the eggs go to waste. I also very much agree with the adopting option! You’d be giving them a much better life which is ultimately the most vegan thing you can do =]
My opinion is this: if you’re keeping the chickens purely as animal companions and giving any eggs away rather than wasting or selling them, then it seems like a good idea to me. You wouldn’t be exploiting the hens because you wouldn’t be using them for their eggs.
And you might be able to find a local charity that re-homes ex-battery hens; having rescued hens would be fab!
